Swami Vivekananda's Secret Philosophy

- Typically, scholars have argued that Vivekananda simply gave a modern ethical twist to the eight-century Adi Shankaracharya’s philosophy of Advaita Vedanta. Recently, however, Swami Medhananda, an academic philosopher as well as a monk of the Ramakrishna Order, has argued against this interpretation. In his book, Swami Vivekananda’s Vedantic Cosmopolitanism, Medhananda has demonstrated the extent to which Vivekananda’s philosophy was, in fact, based on the teachings of his guru, Sri Ramakrishna. And so, Medhananda argues that while Vivekananda initially leaned towards the world-rejecting outlook of traditional Advaita Vedanta, he eventually came to embrace an “Integral Advaita”, a non-sectarian, life-affirming Advaita philosophy championed by Ramakrishna. This is the same Integral Advaita which would later form the philosophical beliefs of the Indian mystic and poet, Sri Aurobindo. Later in this video, we will discuss the ways in which Sri Ramakrishna taught many spiritual secrets to Swami Vivekananda in the form of “Vijnana Vedanta”.
Medhananda provides four points to explain the Integral Advaita philosophy, and how that differs from the traditional Advaita Vedanta of Adi Shankaracharya. In contrast to Shankaracharya, Vivekananda and Ramakrishna held that:
(1)
The impersonal Brahman and the personal Shakti (represented by the goddess Kali) are equally real aspects of one and the same Infinite Divine Reality;
(2)
The universe is a real manifestation of Shakti;
(3)
Since we are all living manifestations of God, we should make Vedanta practical by loving and serving human beings in a spirit of worship;
(4)
Each of the four Yogas - Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga, Gyana Yoga, and Raja Yoga - is a direct and independent path to salvation.
To make his argument, Medhananda traces the intellectual development of Vivekananda over his lifetime. In his teenage years, Vivekananda was, in his own words, “swept up in the surging tide of agnosticism and materialism”, and became sceptical of the very existence of God. “It seemed for a time as if I must give up all hope of religion”, he remarked in hindsight.
But all of this changed in the early 1880s, when he met his guru, Sri Ramakrishna. In an 1896 lecture, Vivekananda remarked about his first impressions of his guru as follows:
“For the first time I found a man who dared to say that he saw God, that religion was a reality to be felt, to be sensed in an infinitely more intense way than we can sense the world.”
Ramakrishna trained and guided Vivekananda, both spiritually and intellectually, from 1882 to 1886. But what about the period of agnosticism before meeting his guru? How did the young Naren’s spiritual beliefs develop in the absence of his future guru?

This is an amazingly lucid explanation of questions I've wrestled with for many decades. I am travelling to Ramakrishna Mission in Delhi in a couple of days, and took the Kali diksha at the Bhimakali temple in the India Himalayas in 2018. I've been Christian and Buddhist- studied and practiced both deeply, in the UK, India and Sri Lanka. I'm a scholar and writer, and psychological therapist. I share all this to say thank you, you have brought me great peace with this film, and answered my recent burning questions. It just popped up on my feed while I was listening to religious music (Christian, Sufi and Buddhist) while baking a cake! A great blessing indeed. 🙏🙏🙏
I am a regular at RKM Delhi. Hope you have a great time there!
🤘
@@anmolkohli I am staying next door today but just one day at the moment as I'm travelling to Uttarakhand for Ayurvedic treatment then on to Ramana Ashram. 🙏🙏🙏
धन्यवाद। What you explained in just 31 minutes and thirty six seconds would have taken at least a week, if I had to read it. Kudos to the author of this research work. Just one word for the orator - It's निर्विकल्प समाधि/ nirvikalpa samādhi and not "samadhi".
Amazing video. I am very thankful for this channel and everyone who is involved with it because they have given me a lot of answers I have been looking for. This channel is truly a seeker's delight.❤❤
💯
You just cleared an existential dread I had. All thanks to you. Good bless you
I feel after reading gospel of sri ramakrishna and biography of swami vivekananda and sri adi shankaracharya.
Shankaracharya had subtley taught vijnana vedanta only but scholars did interpret in a different way.
If you see and understand words like mithya and sat and asat.
👍
Wow can believe that in 30 minutes I understood soo much about Vedant, jnani, vignani and other point of views. When I would read books these things would just fly right off my smooth brain
Very good video. Thanks for making and keep on the good work
Can you please make a video on the Nath Sampradaya and Kashmiri Shaivism?

Kashmir Shaivism for sure. I want to know more about it.

Love is the shadow of wisdom,a self realised ,what ever the name may be jnani or vignani they work in differnt ways of love .Shankaracharyas' work continues to help people in spirtual journey ,which is indeed a service.A realised being living in society conducting regular duties is already helping by following dharma, which is devoid of hate and prejudice .The actions of love are nothing but bhakthi yoga,as a true devotee like vivekanandha never asks self centerend wish to Maa kali so is a person in the path of love perform duties without expectactions.
Modern Vedanta, instead of resting on something new, rests solely on finding clever ways in which Shankara can be disregarded from the basis of this perennial philosophy. Most of the misinterpretation arises from this word "mithya," which in modern evolved Hindi has become synonymous with "illusion" rather than the technical sense in which Shankara used it.
Shankara used three precise words: "Sat," "Asat," and "Mithya." Importantly, "Asat" and "Mithya" were not synonymous in Shankara's philosophy! But modern propagandist Vedantins only point out "Sat" and "Mithya" from the original trifecta. With general people already conditioned to the intuitive connotation of "Mithya" as illusion, they can easily rally Shankara's position as world-negating. The moment these modern Vedantins start using "Asat" and "Mithya," their propaganda will fall apart as people ask for precise distinctions between them, which they hitherto thought were synonymous in regional and everyday language.
"Sat" means the real, which is ever-existent (it doesn't come into or go out of existence in the past, present, or future).
"Asat" means non-existent and illusory-something that has never come into existence, like the child of a barren woman.
"Mithya" is a dependent appearance; for example, a pot as a form is "mithya," but as clay, it is "Sat." However, the pot as an elephant is "Asat" (unreal). This is similar to Plato's "name and form" and "dependent origination" in Buddhism.
Shankara stated Brahman to be "Sat" (real), ego to be "Asat" (unreal/illusion), and "Jiva" (individual soul) and "Jagat" (phenomenal world) to be "Mithya" (not true as independent, separate existence other than the underlying, independent substratum-Brahman).
Another thing modern Vedantins do is cleverly introduce new superlatives of already existing terms, such as "Vijnani" being portrayed as superior to "Jnani," or "Parabrahman" being seen as something even beyond Brahman. Though Shankara never used the term "Parabrahman," he precisely stated Brahman to be both transcendent and immanent. Modern Vedantins cleverly reduce Brahman to mean only the immanent aspect and then introduce modified superlatives like "Parabrahman" to mean "transcendent absolute Brahman." This "Parabrahman" would appear as if there's something beyond Brahman, but upon close scrutiny, it is merely a word jumble. It is the same as the "transcendent absolute" aspect of Shankara's Brahman-a ploy to present their position as seemingly new and separate from Shankara's. I won't be surprised if new superlatives like "MahaVijnani" or "ParaParaBrahman" are introduced in the future just to make their position appear distinct and novel compared to Shankara's. The world-negating view rests on modern Vedantins' philosophy rather than Shankara's.
Now talking about Bhakti: Bhakti should be rooted in wisdom rather than wisdom rooted in Bhakti, as the latter becomes dangerous and superstitious. Ramakrishna and Vivekananda could see and experience Brahman in personal forms like Kali, but this doesn't mean everyone can. For the general public, this would give rise to idolatry, superstition, and violence based on the personalism of particular gods, as has been evident in India. Therefore, the general public should ascend from wisdom as the foundation and then base their Bhakti on a rational 'nd real experiential basis.
Bhakti without the basis of wisdom is superstition. Let's say if 2-3 Bhaktas out of 100 attain wisdom based on Bhakti while the rest 98 rely on superstition, those 98 would cause more harm than the few could counteract. Personal god religions have caused the most killings due to this shortcoming. This is why Buddha's position is secure; he never took the position of Bhakti yet displayed qualities of compassion and love for all beings-more noble than a devotee's love for a personal god.
Shankara's position is balanced as he rooted Bhakti in non-dual wisdom, eliminating the danger of irrational, superstition-prone standalone Bhakti. An Advaitin worships Shakti, Vishnu, and Shiva without conflict because their Bhakti is rooted in wisdom. In contrast, Shakti, Vishnu, and Shiva worshippers often feud with each other and disregard the impersonal, attributeless aspect of Brahman. Ironically, Bhaktas are often more "narrower" in their views compared to Advaitins like Shankara, who embraced both the impersonal and personal aspects of God.
Advaitins have no problem worshipping Shakti, Shiva, or Vishnu, but the converse is generally not true.
Wow.... Thanks for sharing such a detailed information...
The pot as you said is simply an appearance.
It’s not exactly real, is it?
Most traditional non-dualists don’t take the body/mind/persona seriously, as they call it an appearance/illusion/unreal.
This leads to a lot of suppression in the character.
The shadow remains unexplored, which leads to a lot of problems in the this apparent world of shapes and forms.
I feel this video points precisely to that aspect of Traditional Advaita.
And as it rightly said, traditional Advaita is dry.
It lacks heart, and hence has to be mixed with Bhakti.
It’s not superior to Bhakti, nor is it inferior.
But like Shiva and Shakti, they go hand in hand.
Fire and its ability to burn.
Beautifully expressed. The only thing I want to share is that most people regard Adi Shankaracharya as a philosopher or scholar. But he (refering to the way we know him) is a Guru. He is a true teacher of Advaita Vedanta, even if he lived thousands of years ago. If a seeker of truth regards Shankaracharya as his/her personal Guru, he will take that form for that person and his/her path will be what Shankaracharya, as a personal Guru, deems appropriate to every stage of that person's needs. Shankaracharya can bring bhakti or jnana or whatever is needed for self-realization. His teachings may appear "dry" for most people because they want to go through this process only by means of intellectual juggling. For those who are open to go beyond the conditioning of this world, Shankaracharya will become a true Guru.
Thank you for detail explanation. It gives me wisdom..Namaste..🙏

I forgot to pray for money too then I started having thieves come in and steal from me. I lost 16 thousand dollars over a five year period. I once ciphered a prayer to Lakshmi to give abundance and fortune to my community. Oddly that happened in spades. My house was smash and grabbed a few years later after people broke into my house from time to time to take small favor from me... I bring balance. Why in fawk's name do i deserve to have everything removed from me? I don't that's the truth.
Also regardless of anything anyone does to cause trauma in my life.... I am in no way an automata. I am absolutely in command of my own life and refuse to enslave myself to anyone. If I chose to serve, it is because I WANTED to.

Lovely, so much resonated with me. My gratitude to you. I’m curious if there’s a specific reason why "Samādhi" is pronounced as "Samadhi" throughout the video.
Swamiji was out and out a Devotee. The Lion of Vedanta would , towards the end only say Mother, Mother. Even on the day of his Mahasamadhi, after he had meditated for 3 long hours, he came out of the temple , his lotus eyes crimson with emotion, he sang one of Shri Ramakrishna's favourite songs to Kali, "Shayama Ma ki amar kalo re?"(Is my Mother Shyama(Kali) really dark?)
In one of his last letters to an American Devotee, he writes about himself,"The teacher, the leader is all gone, I am once more the young boy sitting at the feet of Ramakrishna at the Banyan tree of Dakshineswar and listening to him with wonder."
beautiful !

When we think with limitations of my God you reach beyond body limits. When you pray with pivotal God you surrender unduly unlimited way causing ripples of universal consciousness. In this stages things happen without your own knowledge as perceived by one self. This you can see in the behaviour of Srinivasa Ramanujan , the great Indian Mathematics star, who was recognised by mathematical schools for his new findings , few decades after his demise. He always carry with him his personal Goddess.🕊️
What amazing content u brought up...WOWWWWW

Totally agree. The universe in its current state is all the playground of Maya. Only when this universe will be dissolved then the Brahm will be available in its true from but obviously we won't be there in our current form in that state so we only have to realise the Brahm by understanding how Maya aries from the same.

On the wheel of life, it seems there are many spokes leading to the One Center. Perhaps peculiar individual units of the One Consciousness have their own peculiar path, or perhaps it's merely a cloud upon the sanctuary and were having this grand dream in Maya. The only thing I know, is I don't.

Your video is good no doubt it. However, I would like to put forward some of my suggestions for corrections which I think because of English translation. First of all, Brahman should be replaced with Brahm both the things used to be same in other yugas but not in kal yoga specially for those people who live in modern world. So please make that correction it will help people to understand it easily. Second please use the if possible gyan and vigyan as word instead of what you are using now. Thanks for this video

My only problem with advaita vedanta is that they make Brahman ( God ) limited by considering Brahman one with world they says world is Brahman now tell me if Brahman is also world then how Brahman is completely pure , infinite or unchanging because everything we see in universe is opposite of this. If we consider everyone as God then we must also accept criminals as God this will reduce purity or complexity of God and make god very cheap or simple 😢
In swaroop criminals are also the same reality as in atman who is one with bramha (god), but in leela that individual person is a criminal and should be treated as a criminal... If you can't understand this then just simply thik dharma adharma botha are created from bhagwaan only, and bhagwaan is present inside every being so she is present in the criminal as well as the whole world... When the world get destroyed or the criminal as a individual person gets destroyed it's the only being called bhagwaan is there... So God herself became everything but when in the form of bramhan she is beyond everything and when in the form of shakti she is everything... Joy thakur joy ma ❤
When you're playing a character in a drama(leela) you become the character. At that time you can't say I'm not this character but inside , you know you're not this character , you're someone else just acting as a character😊... So we are all potentially God in reality qualitatively just the difference is as long as we exist as an individual human being (self realised or not) , it's like waves are from the ocean, ocean is not from the waves.... That's the difference.... But if you're self realised then after your death , you're one with God... No individuality is there... Only God is there
@@ayanmajumder4009 I don't think everything is leela of God because why god wants such leela in which he is hurting himself in the form of every creatures ? look carefully in the world people suffers you can teach humans that it is leela of you ( God ) but what about innocent animals they don't understand this leela they will suffer more than humans. Second thing leela represnt desires or desires represnt incompleteness why god need desires is he incomplete in himself ?
@@ayanmajumder4009 A changing God is no more God . If God become the world or individuals then god is limited. I call this world as prakriti not God

The real Ignorance is the envy and monetisation of these contents. It is very upsetting to hear advertisments while someone is talking about Gods and self realization.
The real ignorance is your "freebie" attitude towards these videos.
Do you think it's free to make such videos?
Your comment is real ignorance, Do you work for free ?
@@redpillmatrix3046 the fact that he has internet access is proof enough that he doesn't lol
No, the real ignorance is the perception you have that gives it the power to bother you. Abundance is everyone's birthright... even spiritual teachers have to make a living dummy. If it weren't for ads.... you wouldn't have access to this knowledge for free.... obviously. This capitalist system is the best thing that ever happened to humanity and you'd realize that if you chose to percieve it as it is... neither good nor bad. The system itself is unbiased, it is how it's used which determines that... so don't resent the system just because you don't know how to make it work for you, instead of you working for it, due to a simple lack of understanding and perception, it's not the system's fault that you haven't made yourself knowledgeable on how to use it to your benefit. Your comment is obviously coming from a place of resentment, but if you're feeling left behind, the only one to blame is yourself and the perception you choose to feel victim to, which blocks all other possibilities for you.... your mind has locked itself into a narrow box because you've chosen to identify with a victimhood, resentful perception, all other potential has automatically been limited by your identification with a limited perception. If it weren't for capitalism we'd all still be in the stone age (capitalism is the only thing that drives innovation) because if there is no reward for such efforts, why strive for anything. Instead... we have forced air furnaces, AC, running water, toilets, smart phones, smart TVs, touch screens, internet! etc. All due to capitalism. So if you like your current, comfortable, easy standard of living... you can thank capitalism for that. A smart person would see it for what it is, an innovation driver, and learn how to use all the capitalist tools which are at their disposal for their benefit, instead of stagnating in resentment about it, which only harms yourself. If you chose to see capitalism as the blessing that it is.... it's likely that your whole world would change due to a simple shift in perception about it. It's here for everyone's benefit and every single thing that you enjoy in life is due to it, lest we'd still be hunting and gathering in makeshift portable structures, spending every waking moment of every day just on survival alone. Is that what you'd rather have!? I think not. This is the best humans have ever had it in terms of ease of survival and abundance. Your perception couldn't be any less accurate.
nice❤
I think vivekananda had written much more than this. He even visited usa so it's better you upload all his video as he too was influenced by western philosophy
