You are correct, texture is only one of the ways to make a painting beautiful!😊I use vivid colors often. Solid gloss gel mixed with glass bead gel and I also use crackle paste on canvas boards.

Thank you for your tips. I have a giclee of a large egret that is totally flat. I want to add texture to create dimension in the feathers. Can you recommend a TH-cam video to demonstrate creating feathers with a thick texture?
Sheila Hughes you’re welcome. Just search TH-cam for what you need. I don’t paint anything but abstracts, so feathers aren’t my thing.
Thank you for the great tips. I can across flowers and other items made using texture and it seems like a comb style brush may have been used. Does this kind of brush exit? I wanted to attach a picture of it but I don't think I can in these comment box. Thanks
Narinder, there are all sorts of things out there to make textures with - you can buy a box of combs at any dollar store that can provide varying widths of comb like textures.

@@narinder7043 I don’t use combs for texture and I don’t demo anything I don’t do myself. I’m sure there are many on TH-cam that have a demo of that. Combs of any sort can be found on Amazon.
How long do you allow the thick textured gesso to dry be for painting over it?

Can I mix regular acrylic paints with gesso to create a thick design? Can colored acrylic paints also mix with that flexible stuff?
Professional quality heavy body acrylic paint is already thick, but you can add gesso - just be aware it will change the color - it’s like adding white paint. Heavy gel mediums are typically used to create thicker paint without altering the color.

You’re welcome. This video is several years old - at the time I was using Golden and Nova Color. I now only use Golden Heavy Body Paint.

I don’t know, I don’t paint on walls. Are you talking about painting a mural or painting the inside of a house? Probably OK for a mural, not ok for a house.

can we use home paints for art painting on canvas? people say it doesn't last long? how long will it last
jzs pv I don't know anything about home made paints so I cannot help you.
jzs pv I didn't read your comment correctly the first time, so my initial response was incorrect. House paints will work for paintings on canvas, but I don't recommend them. The problem with house paints is you never learn about color and how to properly mix artists color to create harmonious mixtures. House paints don't come in artists colors. I can't comment on their longevity.
but its fun having lots of paints to play with, and also its reasonable, only thing that I am worried about is that people say the painting won't last long, but I don't know for how long it will last 100 years or more or less.
jzs pv only you can determine what is most important for you. If you look at the modernist works of the 1940's and 1950's that were done with house paint - they have required extensive preservation efforts. The paint on the south side of my house lasts about 7 years - you can't control where people will place your work in their homes and it could be in direct sunlight. I don't have to worry about my paintings because they are painted with lightfast professional pigment.
jzs pv I have experimented with house paints just because I had some leftovers lying around.
They take much longer to properly dry due to the additional additives that go into them specific to their purpose (about a week or more in some cases), smell worse than artist's quality paints, the colours are not as vibrant, are not as flexible and I had less control over them. The colours do start to fade after a few years. If your painting for yourself, playing, learning how to use paint etc go for it but upgrade to artist's quality as soon as you are able.
If your using these in artworks to sell, your client will be pretty peeved after 3yrs or so as their purchase will fade & possibly crackle.

What is the longevity when using any thickener?
Not exactly sure what you mean, but if you’re using an acrylic thickening agent the longevity would be the same as the acrylic paint used with it - 50 years, 100 years? If you’re talking about longevity on the palette, I don’t know.
Does the ieso crack after a while?
No
How bout house spackle?
Nick Doe house spackle and drywall mud are not archival materials and will deteriorate over time. They are not meant to be used in art. Some folks use that kind of stuff, but I want my art to last a long time because my customers deserve it. You can do whatever you want, but think about your customers.

Lots of people use lots of stuff that is not art material related in their paintings, but I’m not one of them. I only use archival art materials, and never building materials. Its best to use light molding paste.

David, I'm new to your channel and have been enjoying watching you work as well as you're teaching videos. I notice many jars of paint on the table that seem to be from one manufacturer. I know you work in acrylics, so would you mind sharing the company who makes your paints. I am new to acrylics and am searching for one company only, i can trust, to deal with who makes beautiful, thick, buttery and vibrant pigments.

Should we Varnish the whole frame after texturing or before?
Not sure what you mean by “whole frame?” You would typically varnish a painting only after it is complete.
@@davidm.kesslerfineart1717 I read somewhere that Varnish reacts with the Gel Medium which is used for embellish/texture. Is it true?
@@codelucky not if they are designed to go together. Golden Artist Colors products all work together, for example. Their varnish can be used over any of their other products. I don’t varnish my paintings so I don’t have to worry about it.

@@raefield4583 varnishing imparts a homogeneous finish over the entire painting. I prefer to provide contrast with glossy areas and matte finished areas in the paintings. I believe this makes the paintings look richer. There is also no need to varnish acrylic paintings - its yet another myth perpetrated by those who don’t have a clie.
So what 3 texture products again?
Did you watch the video? There are lotta of things you can use like gesso and light molding paste or molding paste or gel medium.....

@@amandarenee6388 there are plenty of videos on YT that show you how to do that.
It would have been nice to actually see each product and how it works on the canvas instead of you just talking about it. I still have no idea how each product looks on the canvas.
Maybe you should experiment instead of relying on videos to show you everything. When you do it yourself, it imprints it in your brain.
