I come from a LMR400 background (although the poor technicians that had to terminate the cable I have since gone back and apologized after having to put connectors on mine for LTE 4G). Anyway I agree with your points on the specs. I even have some I am installing in my truck and impressed with how well the connectors go on. All the best, 73!

Lol, I will Don! You don't need to study to be a VE either. You just take an open book test. I strongly doubt any of it is graded either. I think they just want to make sure you are a warm body that can fill out paperwork. Seriously. Congrats on the 891 too!

I'm a Technician and recently dug into much of the same data over several weeks to determine lowest db for the length, frequencies, and workable cable flex at a price within my budget. I came to the exact same conclusions and understanding. You're spot on. In general M&P beats LMR when comparing Apples to Apples. I also tried to compare Apples to Oranges trying to locate thinnest flexible vs solid for same DB, but stopped after a while since there didn't seem much point. I think I ran across one case (but very well could be remembering wrong) where I could use a thinner solid core as opposed to a thicker stranded at my required length and freq, but I knew I'd be disconnecting, reconnecting, moving the cable regularly and didn't want to worry about damaging the solid core through repeated bending. In that case though db loss still wasn't as low as I wanted it and so was moot. In the end, I settled on the DXE 400UF for my 2m base station.

Nice comment, which gives me the opportunity to explain a few interesting things, especially for a technician like you.
Single conductor cables, such as the famous LMR 400 which corresponds to our Airborne 10, always have the best attenuation, for the skin effect on a smooth signal transport surface.
When we entered the amateur radio market in late 2013, coming from a long tradition in 75 Ohm cables, we only knew very well the technology for making solid conductor models.
Then the Italian and German Hams, and all the others afterward, pushed us to study ever more flexible and performing models. Flexibility was the watchword, and performance was the ultimate goal.
We studied for a whole year before introducing ourselves to the German market to challenge local manufacturers on flexible cables. Really a huge commitment because the technology for flexible cables is very different. Then as we say in Italy, the more you eat the more you feel hungry.
We started with two models, Ultraflex 7, equal in diameter to a popular German cable, Ultraflex 10, the same thing in .405 "diameter, and it was a great success.
Later we developed Hyperflex 10 and its variants, which we designed for Microwawers demanding flexible but highly performing cables in the gigaHertz area. A must for rotor-operated antennas.
Then they asked us for a DXpedition cable, small and very light and very performing. And we designed the Airborne 5.
Then the Hams asked us for an ultra-light and very performing one for the big DXpedition teams (like those of Bouvet island), and we did Airborne 10 (.405 ").
Then a cable that used the same connectors as the Belden H155, and was at least as good as an RG8X, (much larger in diameter), and we made the Hyperflex 5, a real jewel of technology, for mechanical and electrical qualities.
How can a .212 "cable improve the performance of a 0.242" cable?
Technology, experience, perseverance, ... fun.
Same story for the Ultraflex 7 (.287 ") Vs the Aircell 7 (Germany same size), VS. the beloved Rg213/U, RG8, (both .405").
Somebody might tell these are fake numbers but do you actually think the European Hams or the German ones are so naive?
Same thing between Hyperflex 13 (.500 ") and LMR600 UF (.600") ...
the former has a highly sophisticated and smooth cable core made of 37 wires (round shape), and the latter has instead a 7 wires stranded core (hexagonal shape)...

I have LMR 400 and I like it , but if I need to ever need to change it I will look at M&P , you did a good job in explaining everything
On your recommendation a month ago I checked out the specs on m&p hyperflex 10 compared to LMR ultraflex 400. M&P beats it. Just holding it in your hand you can feel the difference in quality. The connectors they use are better than pretty much anything I've ever used before. I'm sold, I'm using M&P from now on.

Glad you set them straight! I get into frustrating arguments about coax constantly.. Personally I’m using hardline (LDF4-50 or LDF5-50) for 2 meters and up but you have shown me a new coax I will be purchasing for HF, jumpers, portable ops etc from now on! For my install flexibility is everything! Love it! The connectors are great quality comparable to the connectors for hardline! Really impressed!!!

I started watching your video so I can determine which M&P coax I need for my inverted vee wire antenna an off set one HF . I still don't know
A few years ago M&P displayed at Dayton, I think for the first time, and I grabbed their catalog. When I had time to read it I was impressed with 1) their construction techniques, 2) the fact they rate loss vs temperature (something few mfgr's do), 3) the actual loss figures, and 4) the breadth of their product line. Mike, you are so right about comparing apples to apples, something I've seen seasoned engineers get wrong. While it's generally true to buy the best coax one can afford, it makes no sense to pay big money for big coax to run 100w on 20m into a POTA dipole that's only 50' away. Good engineering balances performance and cost. Your video encourages hams to look closer at specifications. Well done Mike. 73, N4BCD

Oh yeah. You think you have it bad? Try having a ham radio channel lol! Randy, I'm happy to hear you are going to adopt my scientific strategies and I'll be curious your results. Perhaps we'll collaborate our efforts in the future and publish our findings in the Journal Science for more "sad ham" peer review. I will warn you though. While I believe most of my viewers were able to pass the tests with flying carpets, the flip side to the coin is it also flushed out more "experts". Even though all of my sources were listed in the comments for them to do their own research.

A little late to this party, but I did a ton of research as I'm setting up my HF rig at home, and placed my order last night for M&P Hyperflex 5. It fits the need of my install with the least amount of loss over the distance I need to run (about 80 feet or so).

Excellent choice: Mike is informed and has devoted plenty of time to reading, studying, and listening. There should be a reason why the USAF in Aviano base in Italy is a frequent purchaser of our Hyperflex 13. Perhaps there must be a reason why we are in their RADAR?

Good information but… earrings. Thanks for this well put together information, I needed this. I’m an old cat so I still need to get used to seeing men in earrings. Hard to watch, almost turned it off but glad I stayed till the end.
What I will say is making connectors on the LMR-400 with their Times EZ branded connecters is VERY easy in the field. The solid core makes it AMAZING to do field work vs the much more flexible stranded wire. But with all that said, some M&P cable in on my wanted list, esp as times connectors are stupid expensive.

They always matter. People just seem so quick to shrug off losses as if they don't matter. They do. And every little bit helps. How much did you spend on your radio and all your other gear? Wouldn't it be worth it to spend a little on the part of the system that matters most? You're antenna and feed line.
@@hamradiotube Absolutely, it's like guys who spend $1000 on a new rifle and $100 on a cheap scope. POTA is new for me. I'm using a 20 y/o radio, 20 y/o coax and a $25 antenna. They all work, I just need to prioritize my upgrades. 👍

Mike, as a Michigader and you being ex-Michigander. I'm retired plactic -design / extrusion engineer workded in Detroit for over 20 years. I just notice an important design feature on Messi and Paoloni coax, extra layer of PE on top of the copper foil. They say if is for better flex on smaller bends, but if you know your plactic material and properties. Polyethylene has good di-electric properties. (amout of curret to pass through ASTM test specimen). M & P cable design then has an "encapsulated feature ". with two layer of plastic. This will increase the amout of power need (R/F) to pass through and moisture resistance that can penetrate the coax. Is this "design" feature call also be called a tielayer by M & P? The combination of all these different material makes Messi and Paoloni extra order of magnitude harder to produce. Mike. do you know of any other coax with this type of construction? If not this will make M&P very unique. N9WEH Mike, I just notice the M & P handles more power. This tie layer could be one of the reasons for higher power rating.
I do not. But that’s one of the many extra details M&P add to their coax to make it superior to the rest. Moisture is very bad as we know, and they do everything they can to ensure it stays completely dry inside. I have another video coming out on the connectors next week that further help prevent moisture inclusion. I’ll tell you last weekend I was on the beach and a rogue wave completely covered my antenna connections. Like, under water!! The M&P connector had zero moisture in it, but the 90 degree adapter I was using was soaking wet.

My only issue with coax that isn’t as standard as the LMR is getting connectors from companies I trust. Like Huber Suhner, Amphenol and Times. And then testing the electrical performance RL & PIM.
But the numbers on their data sheets look good.
Tom don't worry about our connectors standard: they are accurately machined and well designed so that they can either be used in our cables or in somebody else's, (having the same overall diameter of course). So the classic .200" or .405" fits any cable of that size, the connectors for our Hyperflex 5, (.212"), fit in Belden H155, but there are exceptions though: our best seller Ultraflex 7, has an O.D. of only .287", and has been the official cable of WRTC 2018 in Germany and will be the official one in the forthcoming WRTC 2022, to be held in 2023. Many famous DXing teams are using it, along with Airborne 5, and Airborne 10 (the latter shall be used in Bouvet island). We have developed our UHF EVO connectors in order to evolve designs coming from the first half of the last century. Its weather tight design and screening efficiency make them closer than ever to the N design. If you trust Huber & Suhner, you shall love them, at a fraction of their price
The LMR600 could also be quoting only a single decimal point. M&P are being very transparent and accurate with their specifications.

What coax would/do you use/recommend for something like the short jumper between your antenna tuner and transceiver or other very short runs like lightning arrestor to window pass-through or window pass-through to antenna tuner, etc.
You’ll get a lot of different opinions on this but my rule of thumb is jumpers 3 ft or under rg8x is perfectly fine. Anything over 3 ft I use the equivalent of whatever the main run of coax is going to the antenna. I recently simplified things and got rid of all switches, rfi chokes, external atu to eliminate all jumpers except one 5 ft length of times lmr400 going to the window pass through. Since then I’ve noticed better performance.

I've looked at the Airborne 10, 100 ft. cable from Gigaparts. It comes with N connectors. Pretty good price. Have you conducted any research in any loss using adapters going from the N connector to our radios ? I'm thinking of an N to PL 259 adapter.

I haven't done much on connectors yet, but Jim W6LG has done a video showing losses with adapters and it didn't really do anything. He had a whole bunch of them strung together and there was hardly any loss at all.

Wallace, I ran Ultraflex 10 to my Cushcraft R9 vertical for a total run of 87 feet and am VERY pleased. Now, if it were the same length run for VHF, I would have used the Hyperflex 13. But the Ultraflex 10 is an excellent choice for HF at that distance. My 2 cents.... de W5ODP

OK so I got a GMRS radio I’m running a 45 foot run to a 50 W base station I’m using a J pole antenna and I’m debating between . M&P 7 verse 10 will there be a huge difference? 7 is in stock and cheaper and thinner easier to maneuver, etc. help.

Your video is the reason I purchased the Hyperflex 13 to setup a new Ham station. My next order may be for the Sahara since it can get hot here. Getting ready to buy some more coax maybe on a spool with the scissors and connectors. Question? I need to make up some coax jumpers to connect between radio, amp, tuner, etc. I noticed some other channels say that jumper lengths matter. Is that true or is it because the antenna is not at 50 ohms causing the issue. Would like to hear it from you. Thanks. Dan
I'm sure it matters to a certain degree, but probably not noticeable unless you're using really high frequencies. I have a 3' jumper for my VHF/UHF radio that is made of Hyperflex 7 Sahara and the rest of the feed line is Hyperflex 10 Sahara. One of the issues with using larger coax for jumpers is it can be a bit difficult to work with for such short runs. It's heavier, stiffer, and may not be practical for routing in tight places. If you can use it, use it, but I don't think it really matters that much in my experience.
If the Hyperflex 13 is flexible enough I will use it. The 3 feet sounds great to me. Thanks for your knowledge. @@hamradiotube
And other specifications not mentioned is the dis similar metals used in LMR cables causing problems in repeater applications.

Excellent remark Will! The tinned copper of the braid and the aluminum foil in LMR's are two different metals and induce the Galvanic effect, bringing corrosion... In M&P cable there is copper against copper in the same position.
Great video. I think the issue is LMR has been king for years. Even commercially LMR is used, but I think it is because it is cheaper.
They are almost the same price actually. For Airborn 10 and LMR-400 anyway.

More flexibility, less bulk, great screening efficiency, dramatically reducing the background noise, (which brings a great chance to consistently better your listening capability, especially if someone is still using the old Rg213, Rg8, Rg214). We managed to turn upside down the European market with our Cables and connectors solutions. We are here now to basically inform, without pretending anything and asking just for some attention.

Really like the M&P connectors for sure. Antennas are King though in my experience. When I get that perfect then a few tenths of a dB of loss MAY be noticeable. But then there is my hearing to work on. Talk about dBs of loss. TNX Mike, how's the CW coming?
They are both good, the point is more to show that there are better coax than LMR. The stock answer from so many hams is that LMR-400 is the best. While it is good coax, it is not the best. Let me know when the party is. And what's CW??

Ok so the whole family is Hams, but we use GMRS/FRS around our farm. Radios are cheaper, and honestly, while not really business-type stuff, I think keeping the Ham area clear is a good thing for all of us. I need to cover about 130 acres with GMRS, and I want to limit our signal, to just VERY reliable around the farm, I don't want at least that portion to be way out there. I need to figure out how much HyperFlex 10 to order, without WAY overkill. I'll be mounting a TRAM to a Rohn 25 tower, but not sure how high. Any sites or software to help figure this out?
True the M&P is better than the Times Microwave but at HF is it really worth the price difference? Come on half a db or less? Not worth it to me.
Did all my homework before investing in a lot of new coax. Hyperflex 10 won in my application. Compared it against as many worthy candidates I could find. I'm an Aussie so blind patriotism didn't effect the performance of my coax. Italy wins this round and it wins because it is better. Not just the coax, the connectors are #1.
Coax, Radios, Antennas. It's all the same. People have their favorites, and everything else sucks. I get this question any time I teach or help teach a class. What is the best ________. I tell people to look at their bank accounts and kiss it good bye.. Then I tell them to set a budget that fits their needs for radio. Then get what you can afford! Now you have the best at the time. I will talk about benefits from various manufacturers. But like I tell them, some time it just comes down to budget. Concentrate on good coax. Learn more about the technical garble that we do not teach and compare. Then the antenna. It doesn't need to run hundreds to thousands of dollars. I've been using the same antenna for 30 years. I had to replace the coax twice, and the balun went once. But it is a good multi band antenna. Total I have spent MAYBE $155 Canadian on it. Not bad. I also have Jason's end fed for portable. You can do a lot with a crappy radio and good coax and antenna, but a perfect radio, with bad coax or a bad antenna won't do shit! Sorry but that is the best way to say it. Most of my ham life was buying used gear and making it work. I did get a Yaesu 857 when it came out, and I got an IC-7300 now.But that took me years to get that far. With the choice now of a lot of the cheaper but goo Chinese stuff at a much better cost, I talk to them about the benefits, and the downfalls of QRP. I love QRP. With the HF gear I now own, QRP is my newest obsession. I just managed to snag one of the new QDX radios from QRP-Guys.. Can not wait to get it home, built and tested, and part of my portable gear. I think itt will get a LOT of use!
I want some M&P but just can't find what I need. Gigaparts generally only has 1.5 or 3 feet or over 200 feet of what I want in stock. I've been on their notify me list for weeks. Is M&P limiting distribution to keep the price up? 😢
Gigaparts has a very large order coming in within a couple weeks. They should have everything you could ever possibly want then. You can always order direct from M&P as well. There are 5% off coupons in the description either way.

Avoid the fuss n' muss, go to 600 ohm Twin Lead Balanced Feed. You can even make your own with whatever impedance you need.
The info', specs', comparisons, and how to, is in every Antenna Book I've ever looked at.

Hmm, they’ll spin until you screw the bottom on. If it’s still doing that I’d say something isn’t quite right.

I thought that was odd, I purchased it with the connectors from Giga Parts two years ago but my move had me on hold for a while.
I'll look close at each connectors, to see why it's not grabbing the outside diameter.

@@hamradiotube Hey! I found my problem; the thin metal sleeve that tucks into braded shield, had come out (or never slid in); once I tucked it into place between the shield and jacket, both end was able to get snug on the outer jacket of the coax. 😀

LMR and Hardline are excellent choices for bands above 50 MHz. And it is for long cable runs of 150 Feet or more. Is it of value for the HF Operator. Perhaps if your tower is a long distance from your shack.
I wonder if you watched the video or are just commenting. I suspect you haven't. At no point did I say LMR wasn't good cable. The point of this video is to show that M&P is better. You are simply regurgitation the same thing everyone says without adding anything new to the argument. No matter what length or frequency, M&P will always beat out LMR, (except for the one case that I mention in the video). We are NOT however, comparing this to Hardline.
It comes down to only one thing.. That is what you can afford..

@Robbie Ei2iP. Thank you for giving me with this post and your questions the opportunity to express our point of view based on long experience.
From the very beginning, starting with the Italian operators, we were questioned about the usefulness of a more performing cable for those who transmit in HF.
They said: low frequency = low losses and said they were happy like this ... The cable in question was the famous RG 213, a project from the 1940s.
I said to myself: here it will be hard to make it clear that even at very low frequencies our cables can bring benefits that justify a replacement. Same thing for the PL 259, which in Italy too was the point of reference. (the original Amphenol ones were mandatory at that time).
Then I remembered that both the RG 58, RG 213, or RG8, had a shielding efficiency of> 55 dB, and that the expensive RG 214, is> 80 dB. Our cables are> 105dB and I said to myself: there is a big difference in Screening attenuation (SA), this will make the difference.
I asked the avant-garde Hams to report on the differences noted between the old RG 213 / U and our latest generation cables, and interesting notes emerged. They told me that even at low frequencies the level of their background noise had significantly lowered (indeed at low frequencies the noises are more incisive), and for example, they no longer heard the hum generated by the Christmas lights. Then others publicly stated that since they replaced the RG213 cable with ours, the noise level had dropped by two stops. They listened to stations they had never connected to, and the reception signal had improved remarkably over the barely audible ones.
Then came the QRP enthusiasts, then the microwave enthusiasts, where tenths of a dB are essential ...
Then the DXers, where performances and weight are an indispensable necessity. Having smaller and lighter cables than the RG 58 or RG 213 was a real treat for them. Eventually, after the first difficulties in our own country, we have progressively sold to Germany, the United Kingdom and everywhere in Europe, the Emirates, the PHILIPPINES, AUSTRALIA, the USA, Canada ...
In short, do not underestimate the new technologies ... the benefits have already been widely tested. M&P is the only manufacturer worldwide that has taken care of developing products tailored specifically for amateur radio needs. Our rapid success in Europe is proof of the appreciation of your overseas colleagues. But also in the USA, we are climbing the peaks ....

You’re all wrong ! Rg58 is brilliant from 1.8-2.4ghz 🤣 As a vhf dx op I use the best coax so I can to reduce my losses! It’s simple to find the 1 which suits your needs as most decent suppliers have charts with losses at the frequency of your choice.
This is all predicated on truth and validity of manufactures claim. Sources are irrelevant if one comes from a place where litigation is not withstanding to false claims vs somewhere consumer protection exist.

I'm not sure dropping "ham rank" like AE and VE is really meaningful (esp VE is just an administrative paperwork drill). I just went from no license to AE in 90 days (and only that long because the testing org I was using only tests monthly - could have been 60 days easily) and got 100% on all 3 tests and I haven't even transmitted yet - until I got my FTM-300 last week, I didn't even own a real radio. A tech with experience has more real-world clout than an extra with zero experience like me and there are a lot of techs and generals with deep knowledge and experience.
