The MAIN reason imo that the Pirates of the Caribbean movies are so great is how amazingly they manage to blend action and high stakes story telling with top level comedy both in the dialogue but also physical performances by the actors. It all comes together so perfectly.
Fun fact: It wasn't a random selection that Davy Jones decided Jack's soul was worth 100 souls. Jack used to work for the East India Trading Company and was told to deliver a shipment of cargo. When he went down below, he discovered his cargo was 100 slaves. He set them free; which led to him being branded a pirate by Beckett and having his ship, the Wicked Wench, burned and sunk. Jack was so desperate to save his ship as it was going down, just when he was about to drown, he called upon Davy Jones and made the deal to raise the Wench from the depths in exchange for his soul. Davy Jones was making a cruel mockery of Jack's earlier noble deed by noting how it was "100 souls" that put him in this position, and it would cost him "100 souls" to get out.
Billy Nighy is Davy Jones. Absolute iconic british actor who was in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Love Actually (among many others). He kills this role though... we love an appealing antagonist 😎

Beckett had Jack's ship burned and Jack himself branded as a pirate. Jack made off with Beckett's balls (how he "marked' him, also all of Jack's eunuch jokes make more sense) and made a deal with Davy Jones to raise his ship as the Black Pearl. Jones saying Jack's soul is worth 100 is him reminding Jack that he'd be nothing without him.

The crew was given a ration of grog (rum mixed with lime juice) daily, as well as of ale, and an allowance of rum separately. The grog helped to stave off scurvy and ensure they drank their lime juice. They were absolutely allowed to drink beer and grog on duty, even with the increased risk of drunkenness on the job (which naturally occasionally led to greater injuries while working). Crews without their rum or grog would otherwise frequently mutiny/rebel.

Haven't seen 5, but 4 is really good, it just suffers from the fact that the first three are among the best movies in the genre. Definitely worth a reaction. And, of course - well done on this one as well, can't wait to see the conclusion of this story in "World's End".

After Jack became captain of the pearl, he became a slave liberator, because he believed a lot in freedom, he in a fight against Lord Cutler Beckett he was captured and marked with the P for pirate, and Beckett had the pearl sunk, Jack jumped into the sea, and summoned Davy Jones, who appeared, Jack offered his soul in exchange for him taking the Pearl out of the sea and allowing Jack to be the captain for 13 years. Davy Jones accepted and in this movie Jack needs to pay his debt, or he will be taken to Davy Jones' Chest where he will suffer for eternity.

Even then there is some info that's not said in the movie, but the reason jack was given the spot is because Jack Sparrow had actually worked for the East India Company prior to him becoming a pirate, and the Black Pearl was named the Wicked Wench back when he was the captain working for Beckett. At some point Beckett had made Jack haul slaves and well...Jack freed them. He was then punished and branded a pirate and the Wicked Wench (Now Black Pearl) was set on fire and sunk. To bring her back, Jack (as stated in the movie) made a deal with Davy Jones to captain her for 13 years. The deal was again as stated, when done, he was to join the Dutchmans crew.

Jack only sees himself as being a captain so he says it already has a captain as an excuse for why he can't fulfill his 100 years of service in which Bootstrap retorts with "then it's the locker for you". either become part of the crew and fulfill your 100 years or go to Davy Jones Locker

Well, if the first 3 together form a complete story, the last 2 are more like stand-alone epilogue adventures. The 4th is decent, 5th had some questionable choices and could've done so much better...

I'd say only watch the OG trilogy. The first 3 movies tell one big overarching story that has a beginning, middle and end. Pirates 4 and 5 are standalone stories starring Jack Sparrow and, imo, they're quite unnecessary 'cause the story ended perfectly with the 3rd movie (plus, they aren't as good as the OG trilogy).
The 3rd movie is my personal favorite but please watch also 4 and 5 , they have some great moments.

4 and 5 are definitely a step below the first 3 but you still gotta watch em.
4 and 5 won't live up to 1 to 3...but you can watch just to watch. 6 is in the works but Johnny Depp got sidetracked this Spring/Summer
