I fell in love with this man when I was a very young girl. My dad would play his records non stop. As an adult, I was privileged to see his very last concert. On the bill that night, my man Mel, George Shearing trio and Peggy Lee! Two weeks later, Mel suffered a stroke from which he never recovered. I cried for days at his passing. I still play his records. I miss him😢😢
Having parents that are like that, where waking up on the weekends was to the sounds of chopin to queen to edith to roger miles to aerosmith to beatles, to enya to vangelis, etcetcetc, well you know,...timeless brilliant artists. That door created for us by mom and dad is priceless, a real mind opener
I received my 1st Stereo Phonograph Player in 1968 as a Christmas Present...Every so often my Dad would commandeer the record player...and I learned about the "Great American Songbook", and my life changed for the better...So, 20 or so years later as a Fathers Day Present we took Dad to see "The One, and Only Mel Torme" at Carnegie Hall...and Dad smiled from ear to ear for the next 2 and 1/2 hours....What a performance. Mel sang, danced, played drums, trumpet, etc,etc,...What a performer!... On June 5th of this year it has made 25 years since we lost Mel...Like your self I still can't believe it...A few weeks back I turned on the radio, and Ella Fitzgerald was on...and I contacted my sister to let her know that WKCR in NYC was doing some sort of Tribute to Ella...but in the text I sent my sister what I also told my her was "That any day you can listen to Ella is a very good day!"...and nobody championed Ella like Mel...It was a privilege that I got to see him...and "Yes" I'm also still listening to him!...It never gets old.
@@wandertree Not only was he such a gifted singer . He was talented writer. I remember reading one of his novels ( It was over 40 years ago, but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the book. I'll look it up later.) In his autobiography his recollection of why he wrote "The Christmas Song" is classic...He was somewhere in California, where it was extremely hot, so he decided he needed to write about something that was cool, and cold...It doesn't get any better than that!
I'm 69-year-old musician, and Mel is in my parents' generation, but I enjoyed seeing him on Carson growing up, and now, at my age, I appreciate him immensely. This video is amazing.
I saw him after my freshman year in college, in 1978. Didn’t know who he was. I was stunned when he shifted into high gear, didn’t know anyone could do that. A lifetime later it’s clear that only a precious few can, and I come back to them often.
Della Reese is so incredible with her voice and ability to change the tempo and her improvisation is spot on . She sounds so great and her performance shows all the years of singing the right way. She looks so beautiful.
I grew up a country bumpkin & heard his name on night court looked him up, not easy in the 80s, started to scat. 1 day my sister overheard me & said "well who knew Krusty could scat like that" HE IS THE BEST!
I'm a rocker but have a love and great appreciation for all kinds of music and genres from many times. In my opinion,Mel Torme is the greatest vocalist of all time.
That Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon performance was pretty harrowing for me. I was playing on Bob Badgley’s bass in this video. It’s strung right handed. He was playing in the house band and graciously let me borrow his bass. We were flying that day after playing a show in St Louis the night before, on our way to L.A. to play a show that night. We connected in Vegas and did a quick layover to play the telethon. No time to collect our bags or my instrument, they flew straight to L.A. with the road manager. I played upside down live on national tv! Made some interesting faces as I rearranged my brain waves!

I agree, Ella is the queen. And this is the best male scat that I've ever heard, I didn't know this singer.
He cowrote *The Christmas Song* (Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...).
He is pretty amazing
You're not knowing him shows just how underrated he is it's a shame more people don't know him and his amazing work time has slowly erased his name
Check out his versions of A Nightingale Sings in Barkley Square from 1989 and 1994
Been a lifetime fan and now, aged 88, I still am. Regards to all fellow fans. England, October, 2024.
He and Ella scatted together on a show and it is amazing watching and hearing them go back and forth!!! Look it up, it is on youtube

One of the greatest scatters and singers ever! The Velvet Fog.
100%...I saw a concert of his...it was the best concert I've ever seen...I left there high...and I hadn't even started smoking grass at that stage!!!!
@@kevinherbert4256 haha, I saw him a couple of times and he just blew me away. I wasn't high either time.
At 56 years of age. This is my favorite music. Dino, Ella, Nat, Glenn Miller and so many more. My parents music is my music. Thanks Mom and Pop!
Your parents raised you right!
Master of his profession. An honour to listen to you Sir.
Just simply marvelous. Mel was the absolute best at his game.
Singing is an art NOT a game. 🙂👍
He’s a true entertainer! Comic and Singer lol! Love that he tipped his hat to the Queen herself… Ella Fitzgerald.
Mel is Jazz vocal of all times !

I can watch this over and over again. Absolutely marvellous!
Mel's holding court, folks. No one does it like Torme!❤️
Mel was a regular on my my favorite TV show NIGHT COURT. 👍
I've been watching reruns of Night Court. It's such a great show! One of my favorites, too!
That may be the best scatting performance I’ve ever seen! Wow! He can really sing!
Treat yourself to Ella Fitzgerald nailing "Old McDonald Had a Farm"...
That's a talented man. Great ear.

Man what I would pay to see Mel in concert. Dude was absolutely amazing and so entertaining.
I really love "Scat Jazz"! 😊
OMG! Love it.

There are videos of Mel and Ella singing and scatting together. Primo stuff!
I love jazzy and scat, that’s entertainment
I've heard about him thanks to the Italian greatest singer ever, Mina, and now I definetly love him!
Awesome performance by the man who composed the "Christmas Song"---"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire...."
Mel...love & miss you ❤
Musical brilliance at its best from Mel Torme. Scatting is a great talent to have when the singer forgets the words to the song!
Mel
You’re terrific
I love scat so much I had my ol lady put it on my chest
I love this, what genius, LIKE
IF YOU THINK HE IS A GENIUS AND YOU SUPPORT THE TROOPS

Probably because of his looks.

The Velvet Fog
kanye lift yourself
Assume that he sings between meals, smile?
He is no Betty Carter or Ella…but more like the Elvis of real music, a poser a fake essentially!
sweeter... kinder.... and gentler to who??... certainly not to people that looked like me...
Always a victim out there.
Immense bore
Horrendous style of music. Infinitely better without vocals. Skat is exactly what it is. Skat.
😂 I suppose you love it or absolutely hate it, like Marmite/Vegemite….😂
Terrible. Awful. Embarrassing. Charity events torturing that poor audience
