    You actually opened it the difficult way. Getting it started is far easier if you turn it down nearly ALL the way so that the knife is practically touching the lip of the bottle, then, instead of pulling, just angle the knife down as if you were trying to close the corkscrew attachment back into the knife. This torque helps you get the cork started, which is the most difficult part, then you can pull it as usual.

      This. This is how a waiter at a restaurant would do it with their corkscrew. Removes the need to he-man it out.

    I've always struggled to use the corkscrew on the swiss army knife to open the bottle. I thought I was just too weak or something, which was a blow to my ego :P But the method of just pulling it a little bit at time worked perfectly! Thanks for the video!

    So, Jeff, there is an item out there that I have in my kitchen for use with a bottle of wine if it is only partially drunk and you want to save it for another day. It is a "vacuum wine stopper" and it is a very simple item but effectively stores the wine as if the cork had never been removed. You put the proprietary rubber cork on the bottle (the kits usually come with two but you can get more) and then you take the specially designed pump and pump it about 10 times. It takes all the air out of the bottle, which is the one thing that makes the wine deteriorate. When you come back later to remove the stopper, you hear that satisfying "swoosh" that tells you that you just broke the vacuum. Bottoms up!

    Thank you very much. I'm one of those that didn't know how to do it. I did not know about using the other hand for leverage. I have been struggling and struggling and destroying corks. This works great!

  • @trollerderby
    @trollerderby 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    When I open a bottle with an SAK, I will thread the corkscrew in as deep as it will go and then use the hinge for leverage against the mouth of the bottle. You can practically do it one handed that way. I have never owned a corkscrew that wasn't on an SAK. Anyway, I may have to go buy a couple of bottles tonight just to post a video response ;)

    Screw the corkscrew all the way in. Then lift one end of the knife. The other end is against the lip of the bottle. This easily breaks the initial seal of the seated cork. Then unscrew it a small amount and follow the instructions in the video. Decent video and well narrated I have to say.

  • @RP-dy5mu
    @RP-dy5mu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can put the cork back in no problem. I do it all the time. Just obviously don't push it far in. I usually push it in 1/3 of the way, maybe even 1/4. I push it in so far that I can open it with my hand. Haven't had problems with residue or getting stuck yet.

    I steady the bottle between my thighs, standing, and pull it out in one motion. I love the "pop" it makes. So much more satisfying than other types of openers. Also, the synthetic corks (in my experience) don't have that problem of bits flaking off so you can reuse them unless they are really tight (sometimes if you put them in upside down it's better). If the bottle has an actual real cork in it, be extra careful not to wind the corkscrew all the way through, and if reusing it, be gentle. Cork crumbs in wine= yuck.

    If you need to use a small knife and some pliers. To pry it out by punching the knife into the cork in the glass then rotating the knife out along with the cork then if that does not work use the pliers to pry it out.

    I always just push down the bottle while pulling up the corkscrew. It's worked 100% of the time and I haven't found an easier way to open a wine bottle with a SAK. Also, if lay the bottle on a chair instead of a table, you'll have more leverage. Anyone can do it.

    The one time I used my corkscrew on my Victorinox Huntsman it felt like I was going to break the knife. I'm glad I saw this video because, this might sound stupid, I never thought to use my other hand to apply pressure to my Other hand to slowly work the cork out like that. Thanks for the clarification. I had just put the screw in and used my one hand and pulled really hard until it popped out, it was really hard and the knife felt like it was going to break. Lol.

    some bottles are almost impossible to open this way because the cork fuses to the bottle. last bottle I tried to open with a corkscrew this way ended up stripping the cork - after I pulled with all my might, the cork screw came out without the cork attached. I ended up having to use a knife.

  • @Rangefindergeneral
    @Rangefindergeneral 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ok you had it right on the knife before the one in the bottle. The way you did it will bend the corkscrew out of the knife if you hold it the other way it bends the corkscrew towards the knife, its much stronger that way..

  • @Daniel_Scott89
    @Daniel_Scott89 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can turn the cork upside down and put it back in the wine bottle and it'll fit perfectly. As long as you don't leave it in there for months, the cork won't dry out and break/crumble.

  • @Xenysys
    @Xenysys 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    I tried using my Victorinox Cyber Tool 34 on a wine cork before and it felt like the $100 knife was going to break in my hands. With actual cork, it can be lodged in the bottle really snug and stubborn.

  • @Exfonte
    @Exfonte ปีที่แล้ว

    A lot of time to get it halfway wrong. You use the knife "body" for leverage leverage to start the process.

  • @shurdi3
    @shurdi3 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Wait don't just pull on it first. Put the knuckle on your left hand on one end of the sak, and push the other side of the blade up, so that you have a leverage advantage, until you're about halfway there.

    • @IsawUupThere
      @IsawUupThere 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +shurdi3 Yeah, that's much easier. I was looking this up about 5 min. into trying to get a real cork out of a wine bottle. If I pulled on it, it didn't move at all. I had to put leverage on it. Once I got it out about a quarter inch, I cut off the top of the cork and repeat. That was the only way. Real cork is resiliant.

  • @richardkimmel1224

    I believe the easiest way is simply drive the corkscrew completely down until the cork turns in the bottle, then it is easy to pull out. I tried this with a bottle of wine that had a cork so tight that I could not budge it any other way.

      Just to add to your pocketknife bit... for those without bottle stoppers(?), they can still use the cork by cutting a cross-cut in the inside end (opposite of the screwed end) with a v-shape for each cut removing the center of each v-shape cut. About 1/2 inch deep. It’ll be an easy push in and pull out cork.
      Hope this makes sense.
