    Not allegedly, they showed us that bank-escape scene from Heat during my mission training in the Danish Army. As an example of fire and movement, covering and suppressive fire. And we were told that If we couldn't reload as fast as Val Kilmer, we were a failure as soldiers, since no actor should be able to out-reload a professional soldier. :) true story.

      eyezon1975 we also watched segments of the bank escape scene as well during S.W.A.T. and Gang Task Force training. As I’m still active duty , I can only say we are a MAJOR metro only eclipsed by Chicago in this region of the U.S. Kilmers reload was the focal point of our viewing those snippets. But naturally the suppressive fire and covering wasn’t lost on us as part of the dialog.

      James needs to go back and watch the action scenes. THE BULLET COUNT IS ON POINT. Watch him go through a 226- and fire 15+ 1 in the chamber - or a glock 17 with a 21 round mag like in the first movie in the museum. That scene involves a glock 17 with a 21 round mag....22 shots and he switches to another gun......

    The bling on the chain around the Sommelier's neck in the John Wick: Chapter 2 is called a "tastevin" and is used for tasting wine. Because he's, you know, a sommelier.

  • @carlmaki
    @carlmaki 7 ปีที่แล้ว +161

    The Flava Flav necklace is called a tastevin and is a mark of office for sommeliers. The small dish is traditionally made of silver and was once used to help sommeliers examine wine in dark conditions. The silver would reflect light and help with examinations of wine. Since the advent of modern light, the dish has mostly been relegated to the role of unique bling.

    One thing that made Heat so good is the audio. Most movies have actors using guns firing weak ass blanks, and then do work later on for the gunshots. In Heat they used proper, loud blanks and recorded the audio on scene, so that the high rises and other things around the place added to the noise and sound of the fight, adding to the realism.

    • @Retro-Future-Land
      @Retro-Future-Land 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, same for the John Carpenter movie Ghosts of Mars, they used the same full-power blanks. Loud AF.

      Saw a behind the scenes that mentioned the original plan was to substitute the standard gunfire audio and they only used the blanks as a placeholder, but the director hated the way it sounded with the replacement audio inserted and insisted they go back and use the original audio shot with the blanks on the scene. Very good call, imo, but it's funny how it was almost an accident that it ended up that way.

Only real differences being the NTW-20 is 20x80mm, and the sniper rifle in Halo is I think a fictitious round (could be wrong), the 14.5x114mm cartridge. Sean 2099 It somewhat suffers from the same problem as the movie I would've given a honorable mention "Act of Valor"
      The gun diversity is rather low. Most protagonists are using either an M16 or M4 with a few sniper rifles, MGs and AKs on the baddies thrown in.
      Or maybe he's just saving them for a more military focused list.
      I mean "Saving Private Ryan" also only got a honorable mention and this with all the iconic WW2 weaponry

    • @Sean-lt1gg
      @Sean-lt1gg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      ThePronato look at the IMFDB page, there is a bit more diversity then you think. Most of the Delta force operators are carrying custom colt 733s or 727s (pre M4) carbines. Also on the American side are M16A2s, M92fs(s), M1911s, MP5s, M60s, FN Minimis, an M14, and an 870. The Militants are mostly carrying Type 56 Aks and G3s as well as Chinese and Russian made RPGs. An M72 RPK copy , an Ak74u, and a TT33 are also wielded by the militia. It's not the most diverse movie when it comes to guns but it isn't too shabby.

    The "spend almost half the video bitching about John Wick" list

  • @SeraStaplz
    @SeraStaplz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I loved the picks and critical reasons he choose them. I also loved the amount of hate he pours onto the John Wick movies. The first one was great as a stand alone, but the second one not only was a downward trend, but also drew attention to the elements of the first one that made it bad.
    First the good. John Wick uses Center Axis Relock effectively. It's meant for really tight combat, but Keanu's arms are long enough that it's not a hazard to his own face. Shots are zoomed out to show the full action with few cuts. This also demonstrates no bullshit scenes where editing would be used to hide an actors inability to perform in action sequences. It's not just the attention to detail they have to firearms, but a kind of enthusiasm to take firearms seriously that comes across throughout the film that I feel makes it a good "gun film." In the first John Wick, the presentation of Continental is subtle with most of its elements implied instead of told. Wick's past is also presented as such so the mystery elevates your admiration or curiosity of both. And the story is simple, relatable (emotionally), and likeable.
    BTW, the silver piece of bling around the "Sommelier's" neck is called a taste-vin. You use it as a wine MAKER, not sommelier, to taste the readiness of wines for bottling in cellars. It's blingy (shiny) because wine cellars have to be dark so light doesn't effect wine. The reflection helps to make the best use of what light you have.
    Now the bad. CG bullet effects. The thing that took me out of the movie the most was that bullets had no impact. There was no practical to compliment the CG. Wick would get hit, his jacket wouldn't even flutter. I know you can't be firing blanks at a lot of the tight ranges in these movies for safety, but it makes it really hard to take seriously once he get's his bullet proof suit.
    The subtlety is taken away from the society of assassins by explaining too much. Cringy is exactly the right word for this part of the writing, it becomes very juvenile. It's a teenager's comic book fantasy / fanfiction level of writing by the time you get to the third movie. And why didn't anyone catch the baba yaga thing? I thought that was a well known piece of lore even in the US.
    There's just no reason for many of the things to happen. Why did he take the TIME to assemble an antique gun to fire ONCE instead of doing ANYTHING ELSE? Why did Laurence Fishbourne's character even have to exist? At least in the first one there was pacing that lightly explored the Wick character, but the later ones all the plot is an excuse for Wick to wind up in a different spectacle of a fight. I wound up with a lot of action fatigue by the end of the movies, and SPECTACLE is exactly what these movies are now. That kind of nonsense is worthy of TH-cam, but not a full on movie.

My favorite thing he’s ever done is a scene in Manhunter where William Peterson is alone, walking through a park at night trying to catch the villain... the music swells, the tension builds... you can feel the sweat in the summer heat... then at the last second he draws down and all you see is his revolver in your face and Peterson’s out of focus in the brief distance because if this were for real that’s exactly how you’d see it.

    Best T800 gunning is the flip-cock shotgun shooting. Don’t think 10 gauge though it came in 10ga.; looked like 12 gauge Browning designed Winchester 1887 lever shotgun, 5 in the tube, with a bootleg conversion on the stock and the trigger guard clipped. Shoot this shotgun and you will find you have to drive that lever hard, not like a pump, to eject the shell. Even shotgun guys will hang up a round by manipulating the lever like an 1873, a Yellow Boy, et al, because it’s clunky.

You literally grew up in the same age as us and grew up watching these films. Say what you want, but I’ve gotten so many guns just from seeing them in iconic movie scenes! Great work man!!

      I get that its a dated design, low capacity, mythical .45 stopping power and heavy gun. Why so much hate really? I can think of a lot worse designs like anything in double action / single action or double action only. (I'm sure Sig and Beretta fan boys just had a seizure!) I really like the great trigger and ergonomics of a 1911. I think its reputation for unreliability stems from the worn out military guns and the cheap imports. Whenever I introduce a new shooter to firearms I hand them my 1911 with .22 conversion kit and they just love it.

    I agree with HEAT. I have the video and watch it every so often. When I first watched it, it scared me. The representation of what real urban warfare would be like came so far up front and in your face with that movie. Simply a classic! Just can't understand why it only went so far with accolades. I watch the original Matrix every now and then but in my mind I know it's fantasy. Heat wasn't. Heat was like a news crew from the old days being on both sides. It was pure war. Good v. Bad Psychopaths!

      One thing people miss with HEAT! Is.. That they fired full powered blanks and recorded audio on location. Usually they fire little mousefarts from the gun and put in the sound in post-production. In Heat the guns are loud, and the sound echo inbetween building and create a much more terrifying effect than normal movies.

    for 2018 there is a great flick on Netflix with that Jeremy guy from the Avengers and the other Bourne movie called : Wind River....it's made in a beautiful location and the gun-play is beyond fact vs fiction with regard at how ineffective a handgun really is vs a Rifle or Shotgun. The action scenes were spot on. It is definitely worth seeing on Netflix.

    One thing that is very under appreciated in Heat, is the sound effects. The gun shots in that movie are the most realistic I have ever seen. The only movie I can think of that is any where close to it is The Open Range with Kevin Costner, that shotgun going off in the saloon is awesome!

    • @tudum21
      @tudum21 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all the gunshots you hear in the shootout in heat, were recording live during production cause it sounded a lot better than post production audio gunshots. So they just use live recordings on set.

      @@tudum21 I recently watched the Bourne series, again and realized some of the gun sounds are appallingly bad. That is atleast one aspect of films being much better today, most films have acceptable sounds. Suppressors being silent, repetetive slide cocking and hammer cocking on striker fired guns is still prevalent though...

    The Matrix had a scene that is very rare in movies, and that's the scene where Morpheus is running to the helicopter, and one of the agents in the hall effectively wall-hacks (gamers know this one all too well) and proceeds to shoot Morpheus in the leg through the wall. The reason this is so unusual in a Hollywood movie, is Hollywood usually treats everything as viable cover (flipped over card tables, couches, plain old drywall, etc.), when actually most things are concealment, not cover. Shooting through the wall to attempt to cripple Morpheus was a damn good nod to the reality of a gunfight, that walls usually won't save you, unless they're an Earthen or thick metal material.
