I was a senior at ISU in 1979....married and living in married student housing....that has been a long time ago but the memories will last forever! Ahh....was I ever so young?
According to Seth Davis’ book “When March Went Mad” this game was not on the original NBC schedule for 1978-79. The had a DePaul game the day before original scheduled but when NBC wanted to do the ISU game Ray Meyer willing agreed. In addition this wasn’t a full national game. The Southeast got the game between Kentucky and South Carolina which was a non conference matchup in those days.
@@irishgrl I don't, here's why. He says this game is ISU VS Wichita when clearly they are playing Virginia Tech. Now, if he put ISU at Wichita he STILL would be incorrect as they are playing at the University of Kansas which is in Lawrence. This is an NCAA tournament game being played on a neutral floor. There is no Kansas or Wichita in the game.
@@stockvaluedotcom Thanks for pointing that out. I obviously didn't try to watch the whole game or I would have known it switched. Should have just cut the Indiana State and Virginia Tech game off entirely but I won't complain as it's a long lost game I can rewatch now.
Dr J and Bill Walton weren’t on the 1972 team that lost that ridiculous game to the Russians. Had they played they would’ve won every game by 50. Imagine Walton grabbing a rebound and getting it out to Doc in the open floor. 😂
I realize that 1979 was not the apex of television transmission but this VCR tape translation is SOOOOOOO bad, I can’t even make out Bird, let alone numbers on jerseys. lol. The video should be titled, “a group of blurs vs. a group of blurs.”

We’re you near Larry & his wife then?
@@irishgrl Not sure where he lived really.
@@irishgrl I think Larry wasn't married in 79.
Rhoads Hall here
Thank you for adding this! Great to watch!
What's cool is Larry was always a TEAM player.
Love hearing Al McGuires old school NYC accent.
All of our fathers sounded just like Al growing up in Queens.
Bill Hodges was the head coach at my college, Georgia College, before he went to Mercer. I was a huge Bird fan😉
Heads up! Indiana St. vs Wichita St. starts at the 4:12 mark.
@43:23 wooo...a little razzle to finish the half..that's mean!!!🔥🔥🔥

The networks didn't know if Bird would come back for his senior year.
College basketball was a different world then.....
Wichita State had MTXE (Mental Toughness Extra Effort) on its pants.
(Wow, I can remember detail, 44 years ago….Can’t remember what I ate last night.)
Cheese Johnson and Ronnie Ryer…NYC. I lived in Wichita once upon a time and remember them in my young days. Larry Bird on his way to greatness….
I love how Al appreciated Larry even then. Even if Larry didn't score.
Bird is the word!
DAVE GAVETT!! WENT ON TO CREATE the greatest conference EVER..r.i.p Dave
The ACC!!!!
THAT was fun! 😀 Thank you for posting this. ❤️
I wonder if there is footage of the interviews with Bird that they were mentioning 🤔
Would have loved to hear the interview.
thanks...Nicks was so out of control.
Looks strange without a three point line
ISU was a good TEAM.
"LIKE" count is at 33... I'll leave it right there! ;-)
It's amazing how well they did with Nicks. That guy was a bad shot or a turnover waiting to happen.
He averaged 20. He could be out of control sometimes, but he was a major contributor.
@go-bz2eq outside of Bird he was the only other real weapon. But man he could drive you crazy at times.
Vying with Romanian gymnastics, Larry Bird.
Thanks for posting, by accident you listed Wichita State as the opponent instead of Virginia Tech. Springs Valley alum here, class of 83'
I think the bright red KANSAS on the floor behind the baskets is a dead giveaway...don’t you?

Go to 4:30 and the ISU Wichita game will be up.

I DID watch the whole game. Unlike you.
The 2 best players in the country, wasn't on the 1980 team, Bird and Magic.

Musta been when basketball was invented

We are lucky to have the game to see. A lot of these games are gone forever, only existing as memories of the players and fans and as box scores.
Wichita St.
Virginia Tech. Not Wichita Tech. WSU is in the same conference. Both MoVo
The game starts around the four minute mark.
