    For those that are confused about the coffee/tea thing: The abridged backstory is that Joseph Smith's wife (Emma) was sick and tired of having to make coffee/tea when church leadership would gather, and was absolutely done with cleaning up the copious tobacco-waste that was generated by the group. Joseph mentioned it in passing to God, and He said "Oh yeah! Now that you mention it, I totally meant to tell you that coffee, tea, and tobacco are super bad for you! Sorry, I've been meaning to talk to you about that for a while, but I wanted to wait until your wife was REALLY furious with you about the situation." (I may have taken some creative liberties with the dialogue...)

I noticed that there was a lot of Asian tourists at the parks that would just show up, take pictures and drive off. I thought nothing of it until later that day I went to buy a shirt at a souvenir shop and these two Asian women were in front of me were buying at least 20 containers of salt. I thought it was bizarre, so I asked a tour guide about it the next day. She said that Japanese food has a lot of salt in it, but Japan doesn’t have much natural salt and most of the salt there is imported and expensive. So Japanese people will go on vacation to Utah, buy tons of salt and go home.

    The "hot beverages" rule is super old and is actually unclear. A lot of people apply it as they want with stuff like coffee and soda, but everyone agrees that it's for sure about alcohol.
    Polygamy is actually not a mormon thing at all. A small sect split off when the LDS church stopped practicing polygamy. That sect is the FLDS and the LDS church wants nothing to do with them.
    And one question I get all the time, despite not being mormon, is if they have horns or not. That was a lie perpetuated by the Mississippi government so that people could hunt mormons legally since they were a horned animal.

    • @spaceseed83
      @spaceseed83 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Also I completely forgot to say: some of the local missionaries are here to run visitor sites like temple square and come from out of state/country, and a lot of the ones that are utah natives stay in the state for medical reasons. A friend of mine has epilepsy and needed to stay close to home and family, but still wanted to go on a mission, so he was sent a couple valleys north of home (about 3 hours)

      Do you have a source on the horned thing? I was under the impression that it was because horns are symbolic of evil (associated with demons). I mean, this myth has been applied to other religious minorities (Jewish people), so I would be surprised if it had a reason specific to Mormonism rather than just being the kind of thing people spread to dehumanize minorities.

    I actually asked my LDS neighbor about why missionaries were sent out here in Utah. Not exactly a target-rich environment, was my thought. She told me that the ones in Utah here actually have a far higher rate of conversions than anywhere else. I suppose it's true that those of us living here know that the members of the church are generally just people like the rest of us, so there isn't the strong negative association that those who only know about the church from stand up comedians have.

    1. Tea and coffee
    We can't have those because there part of something called the world of wisdom which is basically a sacred diet. It doesn't applie to all tea tho. You can have herbal but you can't have green, black, or any other types of tea.
    2. People who are polygamists that claim to be mormon arn't mormon. Polygamy was banned in 1890 and the church doesn't recognize those individuals as being part of us.

    As someone who is lds here is my take. The whole hot beverage thing isn't true. It's really about the caffeine. To my knowledge, it's the idea that caffeine can become an addiction, if you need caffeine to function that can be a problem. So coffee is a no.
    Soda is a grey area. Not all soda has caffeine but some does. The idea of addiction also applies, if you need Dr.Pepper or Mountain Dew etc etc.. to function then you shouldn't drink it.

    • @juliannesmith4348
      @juliannesmith4348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      lol yeah exactly that's how I try to explain it but it's so confusing to other people. It's odd that people think that needing something to function is healthy but like... it's cultural i guess?

    • @kindafreexp1415
      @kindafreexp1415 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is basically my philosophy on the matter. The point is avoiding addiction, so if you want to fully apply it all then caffeinated soda would be banned as well. But my stance is that having a cup of coffee or tea is not going to be a strike on your permanent record. There isn't anything inherently wrong with coffee/tea, save for the possibility for addiction. All-in-all, anything that can lead to addictive behavior should be carefully monitored, and if you are having a difficult time with something in particular, then one should consider avoiding it as best they can.

    don't forget about the fact that: Seminary is a full year class in high school that kids take here, except it gives you no credit towards graduation. It's basically set up as an extra class, so that the kids who take it will still graduate on time instead of missing 4 credits. However, if you aren't LDS, and you use that class period to take credited classes instead, you can graduate early pretty easily. Not taking seminary automatically puts you ahead in credits. At least where I grew up.

Holy shit I sure regret going to there, it's so boring I almost slept halfway through. In the temples at least you can wonder around a bit but don't do stupid shit to offend the monks. But in a freaking church you can only siy there, can't talk and listen to a guy reading the bible. But I was interested about the religion for a few days and then no more Christianity.
