    Looks scary for a beginner fly, can’t wait to give it a try. Thank you for your patience and education. My 11-year-old grandson is already tying and I need to catch up with him.

    It would help us rookies a lot if you could put the materials list at the beginning of your tutorial. Thank you

    Oh, they did fish the large ones too, I know there were found salmon flies in an old lodge here in Norway that were 8/0 and 10/0, estimated to be from the 1880s probably giftet by British lords, in Scotland it was/is also not unheard of to fish flies tied on really huge/long irons. I only fish classic patterns for salmon, and I have up to 7/0 in my box, but the biggest I've had action on was a 6/0. It's true that smaller flies were fished more, as many river has lower water for usually the better part of the season, and flies from 2/0 down to 6 and 8 are the ones mostly fished in a season. The salmon I hold on my pic here was taken on a 2/0 Silver Doctor btw! I think they found some long shank hooks in Kelson's kit that were over 5 inches long. I have some antique 10/0 reaching 3 1/5 inch, which I find near intimidating, mostly because I have little to none winging materials to extend that far. I just keep them as curiosities.

    Thanks for the tutorial- I have quite a bit of experience with trout flies but none with traditional salmon flies. I can see how one could really get hooked on all those beautiful materials- it would be awesome to see one of these in the jaw of a big Atlantic Salmon.

    Nick great job! You make it look doable. I do tie trout flies so my biggest problem will be materials. Thank for the help.

    Nick firstly another brilliant tie and demo, see for the head would it work to use a small drop of super glue on the head after each time at the head which would mean if your cutting with the razor it won't matter as the head is allready glued ?? On this and other salmon flies ?

    • @NickMango
      @NickMango  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Correct yeah I definitely did this a lot in the past. That’s actually what I also did for deer hair spinning. Before you spin it, super glue the head so if you screw up and have to cut the whole thing off, your base is still fine. GL 👍

    Nick I was wondering where you get your feathers from or where you buy them especially your florican and your bustard and also your goose shoulder feathers?

    • @NickMango
      @NickMango  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would look on eBay or Feathers MC. That’s the best I think. GL 👍👍

    From which part of the skin did you say the Kingfisher feather is from? I know you showed it but you showed it too close to tell from where.

    Thank you Nick. Always learn something! What is floroquin(sp)? Why don't they make closed eye hooks so no need to make up a gap?

    • @NickMango
      @NickMango  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gary, florican is another bustard. I would just use golden pheasant. Florican is hard to get. On the bent eye hooks. The reason they’re bent like that is strength. Tying over that part makes it so it can’t open up. If it was like a trout eyed hook, a 20lb salmon would mangle it like it was a paper clip haha. Thanks 👍

    What am I doing wrong? I have goose shoulder and they stick to each other. If they do it’s weak! Help!

    • @NickMango
      @NickMango  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tough to say. Could be the material quality, but it could also be a left right upside down issue. Meaning you didn’t do lefts with lefts and the bottom in the top. Practice using a single feather. Cut 2 slips off and try and connect them back up. Then try a slip from another feather. Make sure it’s in the same section you pulled from the first feather. Good luck 👍

    Nice, certainly, only thing is, You could have used anything kingfisher coloured in the tail, why use an actual Kingfisher....?
    -I mean, it's like a colleague of ours, and then it is not a bird hunted/killed for food, so the only thing driving the hunt for them is our "need" of them....!!!
