Hey Jill🙂..speaking on the bootstrap 2.5 inch containers..as well as reusing...you could encourage customers at your plant sale to return them the following year for a discount. Those that arent gonna use them..can return them..which will cut down your costs..as well as encouraging greener growing 🙂 the best of both worlds 😁

Great info! Thanks! Wish we could make it down to Arkansas but that would be too far. I'd love to see this in action.

This is such helpful information. I would love more info on how you get these partnerships with some of the items in your store. I know a few folks that do different items like make cutting boards that are similar, but how did you start that process? Do you buy the items upfront then sale at a higher price to make a profit. Do you have contracts with these different individuals? Any info in that realm would be super helpful.

That's a great question. I try and find local artisans first and foremost. When I find something I like, I ask the individual if they do wholesale. I always buy and resale. Now we have lots that approach us with their ideas/products

Thank you! Lots of good information. I gave away free plants last year asking just for feedback or to help others enjoy indoor and outdoor gardening. This year I over started seeds again, but don’t plan to make a profit. I prefer to give extras away for free as a gesture of kindness. My husband would love to see me make a profit, but we agreed jumping through hoops in our area for permits and dealing with customers would be too much stress. God’s provided for us so we hope to help others instead. 😊

I started selling plant starts a few years ago outside of my house because I live on a main road. It’s a good seasonal side hustle. This year for labels I’m using tongue depressor popsicle sticks and I laser engraved them because I found that sharpie can bleed and become unreadable. I too make up laminated descriptions of each variety and I also will post the information for each variety on my website for my customers to reference. I actually learned a lot about this from a video you made a few years ago. Thanks for the help and encouragement.

@@hopephillips5848 if you make a mixture of water and borax and brush it on the spot to be engraved the engraving comes out really dark.

I only accept checks from local lil old ladies at my farmers' market. Lol. It's a rarity, but sweet little ladies that weren't expecting to buy so much are the only ones that ever ask to pay with check and it's only happened a few times.

Nice to see a farmer using real marketing to their own benefit. Too many people jump on board of ideas without doing the studies. Like you said, a simple shopping day can teach a lot.

To me, in times we are living in, its a calling, a mission. There is such need right now for people to learn gardening and eat healthily. We grow a ton, have a yard sale, and put out a donation box. Its not a business.

Hello, Jill. I have been starting my plants at home from seed totally for the last few years even though I have been gardening since I was a kid. I just started watching your videos this year and have been intrigued with all you have done. Thank you for allowing us into your world including animal births, beautiful family, and very helpful hints. Your ability to share this information is phenomenal. This video is no different. My husband tells me every year that I grow too many plants and I may think about selling some extra plants next year after I have a good plan… I guess I will continue to donate and give to local schools and friends and family this year. Keep these videos coming. You and your efforts are remarkable!

When it comes to varieties it all depends on your customer profile. Customers who just want a nice looking plant are a completely different kettle of fish compared to collectors like me. I don't fancy expensive plants, but I'm trying to hunt down every single fittonia albivensis cultivar there is. The same goes for sansevierias and syngoniums. I want them all and I won't buy your plant unless you can tell me that the plant really is Sansevieria trifasciata Hahnii Lucille Polan. Then if I get the proper name tag I'm willing to cough up a lot more cash than the next person who just wants a plant that won't die on them immediately. Knowing your customer is the key for any successful business.

We want to hear from you here after it's over, even if it's just a 30 second video to say everyone and everything is ok. How do you get your certificate to sell organic seedlings. And Do you have to have a certificate to sell?
My husband says if you're selling single plants you don't need to up pot them to the single pot. Just plant them in a single pot. What's your take on this?

  • @jessn331

Are you able to recommend a seed starting mix that already has a fertilizer in it? Or your preferred organic/natural fertilizer to add to a DIY mix? I tend to make a mix with coco coir, vermiculite and worm castings. But I feel like I have to feed the seedlings frequently!
