Beautiful Banshee. I remember being a teenager back in the 80's reading the 1987 Dirt Wheels magazine, which tested the new 1987 red and white Yamaha Banshee, it had a top speed of 74 mph. The magazine said that was the same speed as the 1987 Kawasaki Tecate 4, and only two mph slower than the 1987 Suzuki Quadracer 500 which tested a 76 mph top speed.
I ported and polished my head, pipes, and I think jetted carb. It was way back in 98. I changed sprocket on days I went riding with friends with motorcycles. This was in 98 and we live in very rural area. I don't know what my top speed was, but was doing 115 with different sprocket. I miss that thing so much.

I had a 98, but it wasn't stock. It had pipes and ported and polished head. I put different sprocket on it to ride on road with motorcycles in 98. It would do well over 100. I miss that thing so much.

It was a massive difference between two different sets of pipes lol.. I've noticed that a lot of Banshees on TH-cam make it up to about 72 or 73 so I was actually quite happy. But I am at sea level so it gives it a little extra power lol.
Bought one new back in 2003. Put on fmf gnarly pipes and silencers and rejetted the carbs and it was pretty much perfect. Would pull the front tires a few inches just gassing it in 4th gear without trying to wheelie. No idea on top speed but always thought it had to be 80+. It sounded like it hit the rev limiter topped out on really cold days but not sure what rpm the limiter was or how fast it would be going when it hit it. Gone but not forgotten.

I wish Yamaha would bring back the banshee I would buy one I'm 42 I had a 2001 for 15 years I used to jump it 65 ft I never had any issues with it other than swingarm bearings and rear bearings I ran it 28 to 1 never had to rebuild it always started first second kick I beat a 660 raptor it would pull it in fourth gear it was stock never did anything to it

I just bought a clean 06 SE banshee few days ago and it’s mostly stock just has tommey t6s on her. I’m collecting her but wonder if she goes 86 mph lol

I've tossed around the idea only for the sake of my viewers. It's always been my dream to have a banshee a mint one at that and I could keep it forever but I also know that I would like to continue bringing new machines onto the channel to give you guys tons of entertainment and knowing that the banshee is an asset that could bring two or three nice machines to the channel based on its large price tag is something I've battled with.
But they are my favorite the banshee hate they quit producing em always been a super big Yamaha fan has anyone ever had the pleasure to ride the YZ250 Tri-z three-wheeler basically a 250 dirtbike motor on a 3-wheeler as much as I love the banshee i think that tri z is wicked.
Ave had 4 Yamaha DT125Rs an the expansion pipes were bigger than YZ 125s they bended around like a 200 or 250 an I made one faster than any YZ RM OR KX around

Good question! I definitely enjoyed the power of the Banshee more with FMF pipes on but I specifically bought a mint condition Banshee as I was shooting for the all OEM look and the only thing that had been modified on it was the pipes so I bought some OEM pipes that had been on a shelf for 20 years and put them on to complete the all OEM look.

That is a question I have had for a long time! The only thing I can think of is that they achieved more low end torque by making it more restrictive.
