    Good video, came for the automatic double tracking (dual mono amp) effect, but others useful also. The early reflections effect was much like slapback delay, great with a Telecaster. Both combined would be interesting.

      Hey DragonDestroyer88, even if the current draw is really low (around 60mA I think) I don't use and don't suggest to use the battery with complex effects. I personally use battery only on simple fuzz and wah and only if I have to. but since you got it for free and you have to work on it why don't you try to mod. In my knowledge, there's a wampler echo mod and an analogman high cut mod but you can do a little research and try the one that suits you.

    Hi, I'm looking to get a poor man's Pat Metheny style delay. I've heard that he sets two different delay times of 13ms and 26ms and sends them through 3 amps. Do you think you could accomplish that kind of sound with the DD3? Also do you have to run the signal to two separate amps, or can you send the wet or dry signal to an extension cabinet? Thanks for any advice.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, I've made a little bit of research about it and I've discovered that Metheny uses two Lexicon Prime Time. Those delays are very famous because they add a little bit of saturation and pitch bending to the delayed signal. If you have a daw like Logic, Ableton etc, you can check the plugin call Primal Tap by Soundtoys (you can do the trial for free) to have an idea of the behaviour of the unit. Now the first thing I see is that the two delays have a little small tempo (13ms and 26ms) and used in that way, let's say 13ms on the right and 26 on the left with a dry centred signal, it will create a sort of widening effect called HAAS Effect. (you can search into my channel I have a video that shows how it works. If you add the HAAS effect to the pitching that the Prime Time usually adds (between 5 to 10 cents) what I hear is an effect that it's very similar to a chorus. So now that we know what we're dealing with I can give you a straight answer to your questions. "Do you think you could accomplish that kind of sound with the DD3?" Yes, but I wouldn't. Let me explain. The DD3 will provide you with the delay you need and being a digital unit, its repetitions are very faithful copies of the original signal. So respect to the Prime Time, this delay will need a kind of saturation and a pitching shifting unit. Everything X2. So I would do this signal chain: GTR - Ep Booster - DD3 (first one set to 13ms) - DD3 (second one set to 26ms) - Tc Electronic Brainwaves (for the detune) The result would be pretty convincing but it's a super complicated setup that will require 3 amps and definitely it's not a "poor man's" solution. This led to your next question "can you send the wet or dry signal to an extension cabinet?" The short answer is No. The outputs of the pedals (not only the DD3) must be amplified because they carry only the power necessary to manipulate the signal and not the one necessary to move a speaker. In the end, if you already have a DD3 I would use a setting around 26ms, mix knob at the centre and tweak the feedback until you'll hear it will start to generate harmonics. If you don't have the DD3 I would go for a chorus. For that sound, my pick would be a Boss CE2B (yes, it's for bass but it's great for jazz guitar tones and it has a very handy mix knob), an Ibanez DCL, DC10 or BC10 (are basically the same pedal very subtle perfect for your goal). Generally, look for a chorus that is subtle and not invasive. Hope this helps. have a great day and let me know what are your progress.

    • @pigsyj5008
      @pigsyj5008 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JulianDoe God that's such an amazingly detailed reply and so prompt, thank you! I don't want to use a chorus effect - that's one of the things about his sound that is so great is that he spreads the chorus around, not just from the same speaker, so I'm going with your suggestion and I'll use the DD3 for some ambience. That was so helpful you've answered questions that I've been struggling with for weeks! It makes me think I should help you so while I don't know anything about technology (I'm a guitar and amp kind of guy) I have actually played professionally for around 30 years so if there was anything you think I could help with please don't hesitate to ask!

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Pigsyj Lol I after I wrote the reply I was thinking: I've bored this guy to death! But I've also was expecting a "no chorus" reply since Metheny is famous to hate that effect. I understand his point of view because a chorus box will never give you the same experience of standing between three amp. On the other side if we have to choose a "poor man's" alternative we should choose a compromise. that's why I've suggested you subtle choruses. So, thinking of an alternative solution I came across the Akai Headrush E2. It's an old cool pedal, quite under the radar so relatively cheap. It does tape simulation and it has a different output for each "virtual" head (four in total). This allows the delay sounds and the direct sound to sound separate and you have the possibility to connect 5 amplifiers to it. So you can set the main delay to 13ms and tweak the delay gap to have one head near the 26ms. In this way, you can highly reduce the cost having only one delay unit and avoid the saturation since the tape simulation. The problem is that you have to use 3 amps. As I told you, you can't use only a cabinet. What you can do is to use small transistor amp to do the delay reducing in this way the cost. One solution can be to use a pedal like the Boss LS2 to mix the tree signals into one and use only one amplifier. But now you're back into a territory where you have a chorus effect without the benefits of the immersive experience of having the sound come from three sources but more complicated, heavy, more expensive and that requires more maintenance than a chorus. In the end the headrush is the best solution I cam across but basically what you need is a double delay with independent delay time, direct out and that has a min delay time of 13ms. I'm really curious to see how it goes so keep me updated.

    • @JulianDoe
      @JulianDoe  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi, well despite being "digital" the DD3 has a lot of character so it's completely normal that the signal is not perfectly clean. To improve the signal of the direct out you can try to use a buffer between the delay and the amp. You don't have to use double amp all the time but only if you want some kind of effect or if you want to have a system dry/wet. Building a rig is not a science, is an art and it requires a lot of experiments to find what solution suits you. I hope that my videos inspired you and other guys to try something different.
