OMG......over 80 years old.....still controvercial...still very much alive.....harsh..... so very much like Gitlis. And musically so interesting. Never boring, always himself.......the art of Ivry Gitlis. Listen to him with your eyes closed: clearly, that's Gitlis. a great character, one of the best there is.
Gitlis was born in August 1922. That makes him 88 (eighty-eight) years old in this performance. Incredible! Sure, his tone isn't what is used to be, but technique and intonation remain solid, and the temperament and ability to communicate with the audience are totally undiminished. Must've been the experience of a lifetime for the students who were accompanying him.
I wonder if there has ever been an orchestra behind this brilliant and creative player that has been able to not only stay with him but understand and support how he just dances with the compositions he performs. It must be very challenging! To their credit, they did the best they could, including how hard the concert master was leading the group. That would have been some workout. :)
Gitlis is every bit as outstanding as Oistrakh, just totally different. Oistrakh couldn't have played this Gypsy feel anywhere near like Gitlis. This sort of playing is his trademark, much as Oistrakh's is luscious romanticism.

I even like this better than his older performances. No one dares to play with this degree of individuality any longer.
Mr. Ivry Gitlis, I wish you to live 1000 years !!!
the fire that he lights in the orchestra is incredible
Yes. It's tangible!!
It is simply amazing. I think his performances of Rondo Capriccioso must be the best! Bravo Maestro!!!!

I'm glad to have lived and heard this wonderful violin music played by Gitlis.
I hope I can play like that when I am in my 80s - I doubt it! haha! He gives this piece a Gypsy feel which is wonderful!
gave me shivers...this is art, pure and simple!
I didn't think he could sound better than his old recordings.
I was incredibly wrong.
FANTASTIC ARTISTE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pure devil!!!
listen to david oistrakh If you have ears, you will "hear" the difference between good and outstanding
I did.. Ivry is definitely the outstanding.
andre savalas
In my opinion, Igor Oistrakh is even better.
Ivry Gitlis was 82 years old when he played this, you can't compare this to Oistrakh who has sadly died in his 60s
You miss the point of what's a real artist
