It’s absolutely marvellous to be able to watch and listen to one of the greatest violinists perform Beethoven’s masterpiece in one’s own lounge. Technology today is just wonderful. The conductor and orchestra are exceptional. These excellent masters have now left the stage, but before doing so, they’ve left us with a myriad of young virtuoso’s today, who in their own right, never disappoint.
There can be no doubt that every bow stroke and move of the baton brings life to the music - only what is necessary is done- no histrionics, no facial contortions of angst, bravado, and melodrama-only the sound that Milstein creates on the violin, and the sound that Boult elicits from his orchestra in the service and dedication to this timeless masterpiece that Beethoven has given us. They are worthy of each other in every way.
Absolutely one of the classic recordings of the violin concerto by Beethoven, one of the hardest concertos to play ever. Here, you have Milstein with his unsurpassed bow technique and great singing sound. And Boult, with his unparalleled baton technique which shows every musical detail minutely and concisely. So, we see no hysteria but pure dedication to the music. Let’s not forget that music is, first of all, for ears. We can relish ourselves with great music making in this precious document. In my mid teens, I started to buy LPs of Nathan Milstein. I think one is his Encore and the other one is the bigger pieces with orchestra. None of this can be found in CDs, but individual pieces are included in his CD sets. Later, I brought his Mozart Concertos and Bach's Sonata and Partitas. They are incomparable. Sir Adrian Boult conducting Beethoven was my first exposure of the Symphony music. I even name my son after him.

Non pensavo che nel 1972, il pubblico gradisse delle cadenze così audaci! Nel secondo movimento, il canto del violino è molto melodioso e sono rimasto sorpreso (e un poco contrariato) che anche qui ci sia una cadenza che non giova secondo me alla musicalità del concerto. Non mi è mai capitato di vedere un violinista che più volte nel corso dell'esecuzione volge le spalle al pubblico per regolare il suono dello strumento, ma nel complesso, l'esibizione mi è piaciuta e ho trovato molto singolare, l'assoluta disinvoltura di spostare talvolta il braccio che sorregge il violino verso l'archetto e non viceversa (e ciò non compromette affatto la qualità del suono!)😄👏👏

Non mi è mai capitato di vedere un violinista che più volte nel corso dell'esecuzione volge le spalle al pubblico per regolare il suono dello strumento, ma nel complesso, l'esibizione mi è piaciuta e ho trovato molto singolare, l'assoluta disinvoltura di spostare talvolta il braccio che sorregge il violino verso l'archetto e non viceversa (e ciò non compromette affatto la qualità del suono!)😄👏👏

@@AlexSchwartzviol it was recorded on February 6th 1972 at the Royal Festival Hall, London. Boult was 83 years old! Yes it was the wonderful Rodney Friend.
@@MrCoranglais When Mehta fired him in NY to make way for Dicterow, I was appalled, though I acknowledge his right to do so. Friend's performance of the Szymanowski in NYC was exemplary .
