This Is How Losers Lose | Part 8 | The History of the St Kilda Football Club

  • St Kilda had come off three failed AFL Grand Finals, but still had Riewoldt, Hayes, Dal Santo, Montagna, Goddard and Ross Lyon. Things still looked good - until a 17 year-old girl tore them apart. What followed were a dozen years of scandal, ineptitude and lots and lots of losing. In essence, the Saints had remembered who they'd been for over a hundred years, falling bum over head until landing in the exact same place they ended 2007 in. This ain't a pretty story, but it's the one we got.
    In this series, the Gaz-man celebrates St Kilda's 150th birthday by delving deep into the fascinating history and insane stories of the Saints. In this video, we explore how St Kilda fell from grace, turning from everyone's second-favourite team into a complete laughingstock, again.
    Sorry, Saints fans. Again.

      My favourite had to be Brian Walsh's own goal! Also with lights out at Waverley, Sirengate and a drawn grand final, seems like all the most random occurences have happened to that club

      Still think it’s remarkable how you don’t yet have 1000 subscribers, let alone the 10s of thousands you deserve. Keep up this terrific content and I’m sure you’ll soon get there. As for a future club series, I think the Bulldogs would be worthy. There’s plenty of mediocrity with the odd shard of gold that shines through.

    Being from the UK there's not exactly much in the way of coverage of this particular sport, which seems a shame. Watching this series helped me get a grip not only on the well trodden story of a sports club that lives in hell, but also the sport and some of its history in general- I can only thank you for this.

As a 22yo Saints supporter with parents who went week in week out during our largely putrid 80’s, its nice to be able to talk to them and connect with that part of them a little more. U could have mentioned George Young, in the mid-70s he brought some hope to Saints fans, and consistently kicked 5 or 6 goals on Geoff Southby - shoulda been a legend - only he was injured a lot (fits in with your theme). Gr8 shoot out at Moorabbin against Pies, Young kicked 9 but fabulous Phil Carman (in white boots - waz he the 1st?) kicked 11

    A couple of ideas for clubs to analyse:
    South Melbourne/Sydney Swans (my team that took longer to win a VFL/AFL premiership than St Kilda)
    South Adelaide (only won 1 SANFL premiership in the last 85 years in a competition consisting of 8-10 teams)

    Had they moved to the MCG in 2000 instead Marvel Stadium and had they not sacked Malcolm Blight in 2001 they would of had a few premierships by now. Moorabbin to Waverley was a bad move as with Waverley to Marvel Stadium but it’s always been short term financial gain in lieu of long term football success.

      Sadly not every team can play at the MCG and I feel that even if the Saints had asked to go there, they may have been turned down.

    If I recall one of Koschitzke's shots in his final game was initially awarded a goal but then was disallowed for hitting the post.
    Can't believe you mention famous St.Kilda fans and don't bring up Molly Meldrum. Guys the OG St.Kilda diehard.
    Also, of all the post-2000 players I'd give a premiership to if I could re-write history, Nick Riewoldt is up there with Nathan Buckley (because pies fan) on my list.
    Otherwise, well researched documentary. If St.Kilda were an American team, would you say they are Atlanta Falcons or Detroit Lions?

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly I forgot about Molly and I can't believe I did!
      Even as a guy who dislikes the Pies, I can't deny that Bucks deserved a flag as a player. One of the great clubmen.
      Jon Bois actually released his Atlanta series after I began development on this series, and I was staggered by the similarities. I'd almost say the Saints are more like the Vikings than anyone else, but the Lions and Falcons are pretty similar

    • @animerocksautistic
      @animerocksautistic 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I thought Vikings were too 'winning' to exactly be St.Kilda. Sure, St.Kilda have more silverware (by default) but the Vikings have a much better winning record. I would've figured Rose/Hafey era Magpies was close to the 70s Vikings for how often they fell in the big games despite the talents that existed (Tuddenham, Thompson, Carman, Peter More, Richardson bros, McKenna, etc.).@@thegaz-man
      Also, considering yesterday's result, how you feel about Frampton having a premiership medal? After seeing your video about his goalkicking, I never thought he'd play for Collingwood, let alone in a premiership with us. I didn't even think we would win that game.

    • @thegaz-man
      @thegaz-man  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah, on reflection, the Vikings and Pies are a closer match (how did they not win a flag in the 70s?!), the Falcons make a lot more sense as a comparison.
      As for Frampton, umm yeah that's a shock! He did it in the only way he could, though - by being the least effective forward humanly imaginable. Fair play to him, though.
