In this series, the Gaz-man celebrates St Kilda's 150th birthday by delving deep into the fascinating history and insane stories of the Saints. In this video, we explore how St Kilda became the best they've ever been, and yet left a legacy in the most painful way imaginable.

Geelong had the perfect tatic to overcome the Saints defence,flooding and pressure. Passing the ball around. Geelong always had assisting forwards
Geelong were so good at dictating the tempo of a game in that era. Helped that they had some of the best ball users in the comp!
Even as a pies fan I cant help but root for stkilda in 2009/10 very sad for them

Damn this video gives me PTSD. Being there in 2010 broke me. 09 was tough but nothing like 2010. Those years honestly felt like 'if we dont do it now, it'll never happen' Still feels like that.
Can't imagine how that must have felt. It's fitting you say that though, Jack Dyer said the same thing about the 1965 Saints.
I love this series. I couldn't wait to watch this video because when Collingwood won the 2010 grand final I was so young I can't actually remember what happened. I'm glad you went to all the effort of explaining it in such great detail. Love your work dude.

Great video. I recently watched the 09 and 10 grand finals and im convinced that the footy gods hate St Kilda. I remember listening to SEN radio and there was this call in radio show hosted by Mark Fine who was a Saints supporter that said when St Kilda make a grand final the devil himself will kick the winning goal for the opposition.
I still believe if the 2010 grand final went into extra time the Saints would have won. Its just a shame that they never won a Premiership in that era.
Definitely using that devil line in the last part!
No doubt in my mind the Saints win in extra time.
Fitting that of course I’ve watched this just days after they were knocked out of the 2023 premiership race by the Orange Team. Terrific video again, looking forward to see the next chapter!

I don't know how to feel about the 09 grand final as a cats fan. We won, and i'm glad we did, but man was it a messy game of football and the more I watch it the more missed frees and bad calls I see and it makes me feel a little guilty.I wouldn't have been too upset if we lost
From my point of view, don't feel too guilty - Cats were the better team in 08 but for some dodgy kicking on GF day, and had a ripper 2009 in their own right.
The Hawkins goal is a tough call, sure, but both sides deserved to win that one. I think STK being the opposition hits harder, wouldn't have been as much of a story if it was the Hawks or Pies that you beat imo.
I must point out. The crows lost to Collingwood in 2008 by 31 points. The game where the crows got allegedly robbed, instead was in 2009.
My bad, I genuinely always get mixed up between them. Probably as a result of trying to repress those memories 😅

3:20: actually the Anthony goal was 2009. But Collingwood did knock out Adelaide in 2008.
Edit: The 2010 draw still the most frustrated I've been over a grand final. Despite being a Pies fan I didn't want either team to lose, and as I had recorded the results in a notebook, I rabidly scrawled "what the f***" when the game ended. As happy as I am we won the replay, St.Kilda deserved to win.
The Lyon-Riewoldt Saints is up there with the pies teams of the 60s and 70s, and the Geelong teams of the early 90s (at least from the star power of both teams) as the best teams never to hold the cup. I
That game deserved to have a winner, didn't matter which team!
Those 09-10 Saints and 10-11 Pies were so similar - defensive dynamos with elite midfields and traded rucks, losing to Geelong after their best seasons, and having their best chance in a season of inconsistency.
Also, that 2011 Pies side was one of the very best of all time. If you overturn the 2010 result and keep the 2011 one, the Pies become exactly what that Saints team, and indeed the Bob Rose Magpies, are known as. For that reason, I'd honestly rather overturn the 2009 result than 2010.

I've still never understood the benching of Ball in the GF. Like yes clearly Ross hates him and wants to be a petty dick but if there's one time to swallow your pride and NOT be petty it's a GF, when the game is in the balance. Play the fucking dude.
