    303 old engine and the 4 speed trans behind it is a wonderful combo they were fast cars I had many of them when I was young I'd go 110 miles an hour in a good car like that any time..one of the most simple cars there . Why don't you use a small hose to put the oil in the cyclinders?

    Cool old car, definitely top of the line in its day.
    21:00, Despite the voltage differences, a 6 Volt starter can handle 12 Volt, with no issues.
    Also, when you do a 6 to 12 Volt conversion, most times you don't change the starter.

    The strap across the back rest of the front seat is not a grab handle, but is a strap to through a rear passenger lap blanket or motor robe through. That was a thing back in them olden days. A lot of cars from the period had floor heaters and the using the lap blankets helped get and keep your feet and legs warm.

    You got stuck valves take the valve covers off and check the valves. And if you get an 8 volt battery it will work good and not destroy lights or guages

    U gonna blow the electrics out of it on 12 volt an 8 volt battery will work fine . See Merlin’s old school garage for info on how to turn the generator to charge 8 volt system

    I had my wood stick and marshmallows ready when the carb puked fire.
    Those vents underneath the headlights--I thought they were just visual artwork things. They're actually vents for the cab. Not hood scoops, but drew in air. I didn't know that. That was some genius design and engineering. Kinda a "ram air" kinda thing.
    And these things slayed at NASCAR in '49? Unlike my sis-in-law's Olds Achieva, piece of..you know. Wowzers.

    I changed a 54 Dodge from 6v positive ground to 12v negative ground the only thing I didn't change was the starter. I ran the truck until the transmission went out, took the starter and put it in a 56 Plymouth that was already 12v ran it until the motor went out. So I'm pretty sure your starter will probably be just fine, just saying 😎😎😎

    Man I can't tell y'all how much I would love to be able to get my hands on something old and cool like this car. I live near Pittsburgh and you cant find cars like this that aren't either rusted to hell or the owner wants $15,000 for it like it's a concourse car. I just want something like this that I can do my best on (I am an ASE certified mechanic for the last 25 years). I can't stand when people expect some ridiculous sum of money for something that's been sitting in their yard for longer than they can remember. I'm 41 now and I've owned 76 cars in my lifetime, but nothing as old and cool as this Olds.

  • @Brock_Landers
    @Brock_Landers 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Also you guys DEFINITELY should've poured some oil down each of the cylinders to lubricate them before you turned the engine over, even by hand. I'm not trying to tell y'all what to do, but that would definitely help those old engines that hadn't been run for years to make better compression as well as lubcricating the piston rings. You don't have to listen to me, it's just a good suggestion.

    Nascar wasn't formed until the late 1950s. Daytona wasn't a race track in the 1950s. The beach was the track. Dale Pierce Allison brothers driver 59 - 67. Record for head over flips 12 to finish 2nd. Drove for Yardbrough in 1960 when it happened.

    word of advice never keep the battery terminals tight on the battery that way if anything happens you can get a quick disconnect before it starts on fire and always unhook the battery when the car is unattended because they can start on fire too and with something that old with bad wiring one short is all it takes

    First car a 1949 olds two door. It really was a rocket. when I went to work and made some money we put three two barrels on it. later it got a hot cam. Nothing could beat it including the fuel injected chevys.. Even took a super charged model. The best thing it did for me though is helped me pay for my college degree. You brought back a lot of fond memories,

    Hey Guys, yes you can use 12 volt to start it and run and drive for a short time but just remember the wiring through out the car is set up for 6 volt and after a while you might start melting wires, before it would short out any of the electronics, Awesome vid and Great old rig !

    Now I am going to teach you something you never knew about that Carburator. My Brother retired as an Oldsmobile Mechanic from 20th Centry Oldsmobile in St. Joseph, Missouri. That is Mr. Smiling Olds when you ordered that two barrel CarburatorIf you look at that you will see why. Parts in our days had names. I frive a 1901 Oldsmobile and it was known as a Curved Dash. When you prime a Carter you should use a ten can ot a bottle to do it because they usually run pretty lean. Pour a short shot of Jack Danuals in the Carburator to get it running and then clean the valves with cold water in the Carb as it is running. Or real Coke in short shots.
