If it were a rare mint Gremlin X with a 304 v8 and Levi jeans interior, you may get 15 to 25k. This one would fetch 2-3 ish. This is the kind of ugly car that you either love it or you don't. No middle of the road. Its only appeal is an ideal platform to radicalize for a burnout/drag car..., since it has the room under the hood for an LS.

RE: Giving broken down stuff another chance. For me, this is what it's all about. The satisfaction I get from getting something working/running again that someone else gave up on is immeasurable. All it really takes is persistence and the willingness to learn. With the internet and TH-cam specifically, it's never been easier to do this. Don't hesitate to try - you get a little smarter every time, even if you're "not mechanical".
I used to have an AMC Hornet of the same vintage. It was a solid car; the engine was easy to work on and never let me down. I wish I still had it today.

I was Given 1 while My Buick trans was Being rebuilt, I dove that Gremlin to Texas 2 times 3000 miles each way pulling a small trail 8x10 80-100 mph 3 of us stayed in pass lane for 300 miles never dropped below 85mph Great on gas and stable on the road, It's not a Car for a hot rod, but some people do. But good Car
That's the thing. These old I6 engines were great on gas so long as they weren't put in a 3/4 ton+ truck with 4.11 gears. I can see these motors still having plenty of low-end torque naturally even with highway gears in a car or light duty.

Not an AMC fan here but I gotta admit, that car is a survivor! I am loving it! It's pretty rare to see a 73' Gremlin X that good in original condition! Heck to see any 73' in that condition is rare where we live in the rust belt! I think when the wife sees it, you might be keeping it after all. lol
In 1990 my grandfather's neighbor died and my grandfather was able to get me the neighbor's '74 Gremlin for free. 36,000 miles, garage-kept, same exact red with gold swoosh. Interior was different. Black metal dash, no padding. Must have been the base model. I drove that car around Long Island for a couple years and have never been pulled over as much as in that car. It ran, but it was complete turd. But it was a free turd.
Thanks for that Luke. My first car in 1985 was a 75 Gremlin X 3 speed. That six cylinder in that one never used a drop of oil. I drove it all over the place. Mine had rust on the firewall where the wiring connector went through. I had to bypass the ignition similar to what you did. It was always intermittent after that. I had to put leaf spring shackles on the back because it sagged. Fun little odd car. 🚘
Parts Master appears to be a budget filter aftermarket parts supplier. Other comments on the interwebs claim the parts numbers are the same as WIX. Always love how thorough you are in your explanations. Keep saving North American auto history.
Drove my parents Gremlin to high school (class of 75) when I was in there good graces, ended up buying it from them. I loved that car started up every time during those damm cold mornings 😊thanks for bringing this one back to life.
Hey, Luke, no lie.. when i was a little kid ( 60 years ago ) i was eating my morning Cheerios when ( about half way thru ) a black spider floated to the surface of my milk. I freaked out a bit but my mom scooped out the spider and told me to finish. I refused- she said if I didnt finish the bowl I was grounded and had to stay in my room all day ( no tv or video games back then )..so I stood my ground for uncontaminated food and stayed in my room all day… I feel your pain, brother..

My 75 merc cougar had a key buzzer like the Grem. One day I just reached up under the dash, found that mug, and ripped it from it’s home. Best mod ever!
Well that car brings back a lot of members from my friend and I my friend Walt had several Gremlins they were Bulletproof the good times we had in those cars you should clean it up real good and keep that young man that is an American icon right there❤❤❤❤

Honestly AMC didnt make bad vehicles and they are very underrated. theres a pretty nice Green Gremlin that i see sometimes around my area. and my buddy owns two AMC Eagles that used to be my grandpas and both being 1982s. one is an SX4 with a 304 V8 stuffed into it and its a badass car. the other is a Wagon that has the same engine as this Gremlin. My dad also has a restored 1969 AMX with a 390.
That Gremlin is just too cool!!! I can remember making fun of them as a kid, now I want one. If you let it go I hope it goes to a good home who will take care of it and just drive it in historically stock condition. It would be neat to see you clean up the mechanicals, brakes and what not before you let it go. This car is a serious time capsule. Thanks Luke.

My first non-hand me down car was a green 1973 Gremlin. $2000 full price! 232 engine and a three speed stick. I had issues with it including burning a lot of oil after only 6 months. I replaced it a few years later with a 1972 AMC Hornet 232 with an automatic. It was a much better car but not cool looking. A good way to learn auto maintenance. Points, plugs, oil changes, brakes.Thanks for working this over!

Hello hello 🙂 I'm glad you enjoy my work here on youtube - I grew up when these cars were still cheap, and they ended up being the cars I drove everyday. Even as time has progressed, they are still my favorite era of vehicle to utilize - there's just something special about them that can't be recreated with anything today 🙂

I'm in Australia and my introduction to the gremlin was the 1973 gremlin X, always had a soft spot for them. Especially as it didn't make it here, we had javelin's, hornet sedan, rebel/matador sedan and wagon and matador X couple until the mid seventies.
Watching this makes me miss my 74 Gremlin X .I bought in 73. It fired up everyday in North Dakota winter. It had the 258 engine and I immediately wished I had ordered the 304 with Levi interior.
I feel this car should be plugged into the Carb Cheater Program...become part of the logo...taken to shows as marketing tool...iconic brand association...video series...instal /tuning vids...b4 /after stats vid...
If I owned them both I would sell the VW. It’s probably worth more because people love them for some insane reason and I think the gremlin is way cooler
The VW would get more attention for sure, from all types of people. Probably nonstop, actually. Depends on the day whether I would like that or not. I'm definitely more of a fan of the AMC.
I'm surprised about the amount of TH-camrs who revive vehicles, complain about people letting them rust away in a barn or field only to take it home and do the exact same thing, if you're not gonna use it pass it along to someone who will, great job helping get something back on the road to be used and enjoyed.
Nah. Keep the six.... maybe 2-barrel it.... add power steering and power brakes and just enjoy it. They can be made to be such nice riding little cars.... I added a bunch of sound-deadening to my own '70 Gremlin so that now you can actually have a conversation in the car. Mine's a 232 3 speed but is quite capable of keeping up with modern traffic. The fact that it's a SIX cylinder Gremlin X makes it a bit of an anomaly. Granted, the X-package is nothing more than a trim package.... but most X-package cars were also V8's.
I love those straight 6’s! I had an AMC Hornet and my dad had a Concord. While we had many issues the actual engine itself was never the issue. Transmission died on the Hornet and I couldn’t afford to fix it. The Concord died after I rear-ended a lifted Bronco with a hitch and it pushed the radiator into the fan. It was still running afterwards and I later drove it home for us to scavenge parts off of it.
My mom had a purple 76 Gremlin, straight 6, with a 3 or 4 speed on the floor, it was a holeshot machine!! Would make a killer drift car, we could make it go sideways at will under 30 mph!! Fun car, surprisingly touquey!!

When I started to get interested in cars about 50 years ago, the Gremlin was my favorite car and I dreamt about owning one some day. It did never happen, but I would still want one.
Very nice time capsule of a car. My dad acquired a 1968 Rambler Rebel station wagon that was originally bought new by my grandfather's brother. Long story short, by the time we got it, the transmission needed work and the carburetor was clogged. It had the old inline 6cylinder. We got it running again. Had the carburetor rebuilt but didn't get the gas mileage it originally used to get - about 17mpg. Before the rebuild, that car got 25mpg! I bet that gremlin would do similar.
Went off your recommendation and bought that JnC jump box, and you were right! Works amazingly. Cranked the sbc in my old kaiser m715 and my son and I got the old girl running this past weekend!
I am a classic car nut as well as an AMC fanatic and the '70-'78 Gremlin is one of my favorites!! AMC may have been a cheap car brand, but at least they were still good quality for a reasonable price!
Nice Prestone fuel tank! Looks like the one I have on my '72 Scorpion Stingerette snowmobile. It sat since the late 80's I shit you not, the most expensive thing that it has is the gas in it's "tank" You've gotta love the old stuff, it just wants to live.
FYI my dad and I owned a gremlin X also a AMC station wagon. 1 thing they were good for doing, was blowing off the distributor cap. If I happens to you, the vacuum advance operated from a hose from below carburetor to distributor, and if there was a whole in the rubber valve connected to distributor, it would pull gas plumes in to the distributor, first little explosion would snap off the distributor keeper snaps, next explosion would blow off the cap. It caused alot of funny instances until we found out what was going on lol.
A good find that's in great shape. Those AMC 6's are tough little engines with 7 main bearings on the crank shafts. If you plan on keeping it, maybe think about doing a turbo conversion. I've seen numerous other slant 6 conversions but never one done on an AMC 6. It would be a cool little sleeper without having to do a V8 swap. Keep up the good work and hopefully we see more progress with this one.
Hey Luke, I ended picking up a "Progressive Inition" HEI for my wife's 67 Malibu. Single handedly the best $ I have spent. I set up my Eddy AVS2 to your specs, mapped in the timing and she fired off within half a rev and runs like she's injected. I hate Chevies, but I am very impressed how well it's little Vortec headed 350 gets up and gets gone. Thanks for all the vids brother!

I couldn't imagine being 6'7" and comfortably sitting behind the wheel in the Gremlin. Not that it's a 'tiny' vehicle.. but it reminds me of my parent's Chevette when I was a child. We had a 1980 Chevy Chevette that my mom drove.. They didn't have it for super long. They had an 85 Grand Marquis that turned out getting replaced over a lemon law dispute (I was young back then but i remember that was a big issue).. Not sure why I'm telling any of this. Thanks Luke for being as cool as you are and making these awesome videos.
The Gremlin's party piece is having a lot of front seat room, because it was based on the front half of a much bigger car, the Hornet. The rear seat was a joke though.
My second car I owned after a '74 Pontiac Ventura, was a Gremlin, same color,different engine, I thought was a 232 AMC motor. Same look. Makes me smile.
Excellent video Luke :) that AMC Gremlin car are interesting to for sure and also if want fix that Door buzzer sound lube the key ignition switch were key go with pentriotion fluid and pull key in and out 10 times each ! Plus door pins to lube up and much more!
I have owned two Gremlins and have many other AMCs. Great cars. Great hobby. My last one pictured in my Sig was exported to Germany and I have heard that the new owner loves it.
Cut the front end off at the firewall (body panels etc) built a rat rod front end on it. Custom grille/rad, exposed engine etc with a nice set of headers 😂. It works well with the small hatchback, i have seen it done with a mini cooper and a pt cruiser, they both turned out honestly pretty cool 😂
There was a blue with white decals gremlin in my area when I was in my teens, and early 20's. It had a V8 with side pipes and cragar SS wheels, and nice tires on it. It would roast the tires, and move along pretty fast. Luke your car is in amazing shape. Might be worth hanging on too. You don't see many gremlins around, at least in northern Michigan, anyways.

Just watched the video. Nicely done - she looks great. I think 1 more video is needed. I think you should fix the brakes, change out the tires, maybe a little detailing on the inside, fix any misc issues and then take it for a nice ride.
When you whipped out the spray can and Aim-n-Flame that took me back to my Dad cleaning up cobwebs in the garage with a can of AquaNet and a cigarette lighter when I was a little kid. AquaNet hairspray had a ton of alcohol in it, and the spray properly atomized it. Made a nice blue-green flame.🤣

I retired from AT&T, & I remember driving one of these as a company vehicle. Pretty peppy and surprisingly comfortable.

4.0s never die. The one in my 1991 jeep Cherokee has 278000 and runs great. They aren't fast but they'll pull you up a steep slope.

My first non-hand me down car was a green 1973 Gremlin. $2000 full price! 232 engine and a three speed stick. I had issues with it including burning a lot of oil after only 6 months. I replaced it a few years later with a 1972 AMC Hornet 232 with an automatic. It was a much better car but not cool looking. A good way to learn auto maintenance. Points, plugs, oil changes, brakes.Thanks for working this over!

Even as time has progressed, they are still my favorite era of vehicle to utilize - there's just something special about them that can't be recreated with anything today 🙂

The AMC's were kinda laughed at when we were kids (70's), but it's cool to see them around still. Also, Luke, I highly approve of your intro and outro music. Skorned is awesome. The singer, Brendon is a ringer for Layne Stahley, and that's great company 🤘

I have a 76 gremlin, but your gremlin is in amazing shape compared to mine. If i saw yours for sale before i bought mine, i would have snatched that up in a heartbeat. Great video on the Gremlin.

I'm in Australia and my introduction to the gremlin was the 1973 gremlin X, always had a soft spot for them. Especially as it didn't make it here, we had javelin's, hornet sedan, rebel/matador sedan and wagon and matador X couple until the mid seventies.
You should cherish the spiders, they catch a lot of flies and bugs.
Watching this makes me miss my 74 Gremlin X .I bought in 73. It fired up everyday in North Dakota winter. It had the 258 engine and I immediately wished I had ordered the 304 with Levi interior.
I feel this car should be plugged into the Carb Cheater Program...become part of the logo...taken to shows as marketing tool...iconic brand association...video series...instal /tuning vids...b4 /after stats vid...

Cool to see. I used to have Gremlins. Nothing stopped them except a relay on the driver’s side firewall.
If I owned them both I would sell the VW. It’s probably worth more because people love them for some insane reason and I think the gremlin is way cooler
I love me a Beetle, but honestly the gremlin is a way better car.
I guess if you only want to occasionally drive it, the VDub is cool.
The VW would get more attention for sure, from all types of people. Probably nonstop, actually. Depends on the day whether I would like that or not. I'm definitely more of a fan of the AMC.

I'm surprised about the amount of TH-camrs who revive vehicles, complain about people letting them rust away in a barn or field only to take it home and do the exact same thing, if you're not gonna use it pass it along to someone who will, great job helping get something back on the road to be used and enjoyed.
Those are neat little cars. I have to say, I really like how well it cleaned up. Was not expecting that. The paint job on the VW is pretty sharp.

Nah. Keep the six.... maybe 2-barrel it.... add power steering and power brakes and just enjoy it. They can be made to be such nice riding little cars.... I added a bunch of sound-deadening to my own '70 Gremlin so that now you can actually have a conversation in the car. Mine's a 232 3 speed but is quite capable of keeping up with modern traffic.
The fact that it's a SIX cylinder Gremlin X makes it a bit of an anomaly. Granted, the X-package is nothing more than a trim package.... but most X-package cars were also V8's.
If you’re going to drop more power in, at least make it AMC. should be able to find a 360 to drop in easy enough
I love those straight 6’s! I had an AMC Hornet and my dad had a Concord. While we had many issues the actual engine itself was never the issue.
Transmission died on the Hornet and I couldn’t afford to fix it. The Concord died after I rear-ended a lifted Bronco with a hitch and it pushed the radiator into the fan. It was still running afterwards and I later drove it home for us to scavenge parts off of it.
My mom had a purple 76 Gremlin, straight 6, with a 3 or 4 speed on the floor, it was a holeshot machine!! Would make a killer drift car, we could make it go sideways at will under 30 mph!! Fun car, surprisingly touquey!!

When I started to get interested in cars about 50 years ago, the Gremlin was my favorite car and I dreamt about owning one some day. It did never happen, but I would still want one.
Very nice time capsule of a car. My dad acquired a 1968 Rambler Rebel station wagon that was originally bought new by my grandfather's brother. Long story short, by the time we got it, the transmission needed work and the carburetor was clogged. It had the old inline 6cylinder. We got it running again. Had the carburetor rebuilt but didn't get the gas mileage it originally used to get - about 17mpg. Before the rebuild, that car got 25mpg! I bet that gremlin would do similar.
Went off your recommendation and bought that JnC jump box, and you were right! Works amazingly. Cranked the sbc in my old kaiser m715 and my son and I got the old girl running this past weekend!
I am a classic car nut as well as an AMC fanatic and the '70-'78 Gremlin is one of my favorites!! AMC may have been a cheap car brand, but at least they were still good quality for a reasonable price!

Nice Prestone fuel tank! Looks like the one I have on my '72 Scorpion Stingerette snowmobile. It sat since the late 80's I shit you not, the most expensive thing that it has is the gas in it's "tank" You've gotta love the old stuff, it just wants to live.

FYI my dad and I owned a gremlin X also a AMC station wagon. 1 thing they were good for doing, was blowing off the distributor cap. If I happens to you, the vacuum advance operated from a hose from below carburetor to distributor, and if there was a whole in the rubber valve connected to distributor, it would pull gas plumes in to the distributor, first little explosion would snap off the distributor keeper snaps, next explosion would blow off the cap. It caused alot of funny instances until we found out what was going on lol.
My dad bought me my first car in 1976. It was a purple 1975 Gremlin X 3-speed on the floor. Man I wish I still had that car.
A good find that's in great shape. Those AMC 6's are tough little engines with 7 main bearings on the crank shafts. If you plan on keeping it, maybe think about doing a turbo conversion. I've seen numerous other slant 6 conversions but never one done on an AMC 6. It would be a cool little sleeper without having to do a V8 swap. Keep up the good work and hopefully we see more progress with this one.

Hey Luke, I ended picking up a "Progressive Inition" HEI for my wife's 67 Malibu. Single handedly the best $ I have spent. I set up my Eddy AVS2 to your specs, mapped in the timing and she fired off within half a rev and runs like she's injected. I hate Chevies, but I am very impressed how well it's little Vortec headed 350 gets up and gets gone. Thanks for all the vids brother!

I couldn't imagine being 6'7" and comfortably sitting behind the wheel in the Gremlin. Not that it's a 'tiny' vehicle.. but it reminds me of my parent's Chevette when I was a child. We had a 1980 Chevy Chevette that my mom drove.. They didn't have it for super long. They had an 85 Grand Marquis that turned out getting replaced over a lemon law dispute (I was young back then but i remember that was a big issue).. Not sure why I'm telling any of this. Thanks Luke for being as cool as you are and making these awesome videos.
The Gremlin's party piece is having a lot of front seat room, because it was based on the front half of a much bigger car, the Hornet. The rear seat was a joke though.
My second car I owned after a '74 Pontiac Ventura, was a Gremlin, same color,different engine, I thought was a 232 AMC motor.

Excellent video Luke :) that AMC Gremlin car are interesting to for sure and also if want fix that Door buzzer sound lube the key ignition switch were key go with pentriotion fluid and pull key in and out 10 times each ! Plus door pins to lube up and much more!

I have owned two Gremlins and have many other AMCs. Great cars. Great hobby. My last one pictured in my Sig was exported to Germany and I have heard that the new owner loves it.

Cut the front end off at the firewall (body panels etc) built a rat rod front end on it. Custom grille/rad, exposed engine etc with a nice set of headers 😂. It works well with the small hatchback, i have seen it done with a mini cooper and a pt cruiser, they both turned out honestly pretty cool 😂
The AMC is a beauty.
There was a blue with white decals gremlin in my area when I was in my teens, and early 20's. It had a V8 with side pipes and cragar SS wheels, and nice tires on it. It would roast the tires, and move along pretty fast. Luke your car is in amazing shape. Might be worth hanging on too. You don't see many gremlins around, at least in northern Michigan, anyways.

Just watched the video. Nicely done - she looks great. I think 1 more video is needed. I think you should fix the brakes, change out the tires, maybe a little detailing on the inside, fix any misc issues and then take it for a nice ride.
When you whipped out the spray can and Aim-n-Flame that took me back to my Dad cleaning up cobwebs in the garage with a can of AquaNet and a cigarette lighter when I was a little kid. AquaNet hairspray had a ton of alcohol in it, and the spray properly atomized it. Made a nice blue-green flame.🤣
Sold. My first new car was a 72' AMC Gremlin. I loved her then and still her now.
