- "It does what it does". Robert Gaines, better known as @EIGHTYXPROOF made the long journey from Australia to San Francisco to film this. With an alleyway in Chinatown as our backdrop, we shot this quick rundown of Robert Gaines' MASH Steel Build. He walked us through his setup and gave some pointers for those looking to build a bike that can do "just about everything for you".

Did an excellent job making a normally boring bike check very enjoyable to watch. The dialogue + slow mo is working really well

Really? The long pauses between each accessory has me reaching for the fast forward button. In fact, I thought a few times that the bike check could have been edited way down to eliminate dead air. Different strokes........as they say.
Wooow Terry was watching too impressive
There’s a lot to note about your vids, Matt. Obviously your cinematography, editing, and music are always on point. But what I love most about all of this - and this speaks to fixie culture in general - is the lack of pretentiousness. No spandex and roadie clothes, no helmet, no special shoes. You guys just hop on your bike in whatever you happen to be wearing at the time, go out there and shred. You enjoy yourselves. This is what made us fall in love with riding bikes as kids. Roadie culture killed my spirit over time. Once I started riding fixed, I began enjoying the bike again. Thanks for sharing your art with us.
Finally an interview where the always forgotten questions of "nipple choice" is addressed! :D
This is by far the best bike check I've seen. Shot well, explained well, interesting guy, interesting bike.
Thanks Jerry. Rob did a great job walking us through everything, I hardly had to ask a single question. I'm glad we got to hang out and shoot this with the homie from over seas.
Rob is such a down to earth guy, great to hear more about his riding philosophy. Really important for people just getting into fixed to not listen to what anybody else says, just to listen to yourself, ride the bike the way you want to, and to grow into it. Keep smiling mate! You are killing it! 😀
Matt, you're making my favorite fixed gear content out there. It's really nice watching bike videos with a chill soundtrack. I love Mash, FOAD, etc, but the soundtracks stress me out. Keep it up.
Also, the gearing advice and positivity is super refreshing. Thanks.
Steel is REAL!!!! Super rad bike man. Simple, clean, sleek looking, just all around clean!
STEEL IS REAL! 💯
I’m just getting back into fixed riding, really loved the calm understated vibe of your video that just brought out all the inspiring riding, riding tips and that beautiful build.
It's nice to listen to it even without understanding anything in English. Very beautiful work
I loved a fixed gear from the first time I saw two new friends I just made on them. Rode it once and bought a pake a few days later on Craigslist. That was 12 years ago and I’m still in love
Dope BIKE... Clean video. "FIXED GEAR IS A FEELING!!"
I agree with Terry Berasten. Great video. I love the part about the gearing how everyone's set up depends upon them. Everything he said I pretty much gone thru. I'm running 53-13 gear ratio. It toke 2 to 3 years to get to the point of being comfortable with my gears. Everyone hear says I'm crazy that's couldn't ride like that. But here it is. Now I can almost do some tricks at those gears but not to many.
u do tricks on 53-13 😮😮😮
u know u’re good when andy sparkz smile at u after a trick
Haha, that’s a fact
Excellent job on the shot and editing! Everything from the personal choices in fast shutter speed to the focal length and shallow depth was outrage us! Even the subtle vocal edits were spot on for the grungy punk feels. I can tell you have been editing for a while. You got your own style and I can digg it.
Thanks fam, I appreciate you stopping by and taking the time to write this. Respect 💯🏁
tattoo artist: "where do you want a tattoo" Robert Gaines "Yes".
I'm laughing mad hard at this rn
Wahahahaha.
No pain no gaines 😂
It’s funny because the neck tats were making me feel like his neck was extra long and stiff like he was wearing a neck brace. Obviously an illusion but still.
i love the fact he promotes every rider is different so there is no set part or gear for anyone
Yet he rides the same frame and parts like everyone else. Looks dope tho.
Nice job, very simple setup. I still love riding fixed gear on a daily basis although i'm 54
this mainly inspired me to get into riding fixie... thanks for being rad. yeeee
Love to watch Robert Gaines. My total respect and admiration for your one of the best.
What I like is ...this bloke loves this bike....respect....
For sure. You can tell how personal it is to him. ✨
Definitely one of my favorite fixed gear riders .
You and me both. 💯🏁
That wheelie to bunny hop off a curb was awesome i wanna learn that
His bike is so epic. This is such a cool build and what a great video.
Fixie stell frame no brakes can't stop 🤘
Can't stop, don't want to. Haha
@@mattslumwormreyes On a trip to Ayer's rock with no T junctions or traffic lights, you don't need to stop.
super talented film maker right here
Good background music, help t be focused and relax at the same time, cool!
I appreciate you saying that. I really enjoy introducing calming background music to these bike checks.
Im buying a fixie tonight. They are beautiful
Great vid and bike featured, great build enhanced and highlighted by the camera work sound and editing, great job to both of you guys 💪☑🙏
Rob has such a sick mindset!! Killer video as always, Matt! 🙌🙌🙌
He knew exactly what to say, all I had to do was point the camera. 💯
"amazing, you have steel mash with omniums and thomsons" Zach G.
I laughed out loud when i read this comment in his voice haha
Don’t sleep on the stealth
Such orig.
Fuck off. My bike is a Cinelli Mash Work with Omniums, Thomson, and H Plus Son Archetypes. I feel attacked.
@@sugarpill6006 Haha injured poor boii , has money but doesn't have his vision
Love your vids matt, the cinematography leaves me at a loss for words, keep up the amazing work thanks for the inspiration.
Thanks homie, teamwork makes the dream work 💯
Happy birthday king 👑
Beautiful bike
One of the best natural bodybuilder
The stem hub cap is sweet. I want one!
Right, it's pretty rad and I like that there was a story to go along with it. Haha
Solid video with amazing visuals and insight on how to build the "perfect" do all bike! Thanks for this!
Daniel Snearl - right on, thanks for taking the time to write these kind words and for sending some positive vibes our way. 🙌💯
Whoever disliked this before the premiere is just mad that they have to wait 7 more hours... 😂
More than likely, hahah. It was literally with in seconds after it was posted
That shot at 5:00 is incredible.
Thanks fam 🦅💨
48x17, huh?.... i rode a 42x17 single speed all summer.... No, it didn't have the top end speed, but it was a great commuter, "fun ride" gear....
And great for working on spin and cadence....
Gotta get me a FIXIE again, though! We used to put track cogs on our old road bikes for training, back in the '80's....
If you don't have or want a FIXIE, you ain't a REAL CYCLIST.... Thanks, Matt, that was a cool video, and that's a **SWEET** machine!....
I ride a single speed and I love it. I e tried going fixed but my knee hurt. This video makes me want to flip my back tire around and give it another try
Sort your geometry out bro and the pain will stop
@@sneezecat8433 yeah or lower your gear ratio
Very awesome bike build and video
best bike on bikecheck series
Totally agree, but I'm pretty biased about this bike and Rob's build of it is amazingly solid.
The advice on gearing is 👌🏼
For sure, best advice out there
Just visually mesmerizing! Always amazing!
Everytime he talked, the tiger on his neck reacted. ❤
Hahah, that's a funny observation. I'm going to have to rewatch this video now and see for myself.
Wow. This was just amazing. I'm shook
🙌💯
Sick build👌
For sure, Rob's bike is incredibly dialed. It's solid as a rock and rides like a dream.
Love this build!
Same, it’s so good 👌
excellent works on the skin
Such a dude!
Отличное видео!
Details....love the details....!!!
Up close and personal. I keep a magnifying glass on me for those detail shots. 🔍
@@mattslumwormreyes I believe you. 👍
Enjoyed this cheers bro.
Looking at buying an old bike and making it my own.love the style of this whole vid. You know what you like and thats what its about. Your video guy pulls off some mad angles that really work.ok.let me check out classifieds for a bike.thanks.
question: what's your fork again?. tks
solid looking bike.
It really is. I had a chance to ride it and it honestly feels more solid than how I have mine built up. I love this bike.
I like how you match your bike with your Oakley's. Buying my first bike tomorrow getting a pitch comp 1X.
TigerMTB BKLYN - Never heard of that bike before, but just looked it up and it looks awesome my dude. That 1x chainring up front is perfect. 💯🏁
awesome video always tope.
Love the video. Wondering what glasses is he wearing?
Yeah, they’re Oakley Jawbreakers
What a dope dude.
Nice bike
Can I ask why you choose a fork like that instead of a fork for track bike?
It's longer, stronger, and gives the bike the ability to clear barspins.
Sweet
i'm in love with this project!
Thanks Jose, these are always really fun to film
Great content ... really enjoyed it
Markus - Thanks my dude 🏁🙌
Great!!🤜🏼🤛🏼
Well done 👍🏻 very handsome bicycle
I remember when i got into fixed gear i started with a steel bike non brand with cheap parts, then i got a unknown lv2 with a unknown carbon fork fsa carbon crankset, ellipse wheelset, thomson stem , then i upgraded to some big boy shit planet x full carbon frame n fork, thomson stem deda pista drops omnium crank set, clipless set up, ellipse wheelset cuz i fell in love with them since my second build 15,52 gear ratio, fizik saddle, izumi chain, then i got my next bad ass build, leader eqnx full carbon frame n fork, ellipse wheelset, omnium crankset, thomson stem, fsa carbon bars, clipless pedal set up, fizik saddle, izumi chain, then i stopped lol i got a car 😭
Spank dh rims on a fixie? How cool is that!!!! Just wondering how he fitted the tires,
They stretch but they actually fit. 29 and 700c are same outer diameter but 29s are wider to allow fatter tires
He’s right, fixies are unique ✔️
I'm getting into roadbikes because I think they look dope and zip around town faster but coming from a bmx background it's cute the things you guys consider tricks lol
Haha. Yeah dude, I feel that. It's mad fun zipping around town with ease. Send us a link to some clips of you riding BMX. Otherwise you can check out some of our other videos to see people hitting handrails on fixed gear, throwing 360s off 10 stairs, etc... lulz.
@@mattslumwormreyes how were you able to put that profile rear hub on? Was it just spacers or is that one actually made for roadbike frames I'm really wanting to run 25 9 gearing on a single speed
@@sikisusa9340 - Fixed Gear & BMX both run on the same 110mm hub spacing for the rear. Road bike frames are made with 130mm spacing to accommodate the additional gears.
Just make sure you get hubs with 3/8ths axels & not 14mm, although you can find some slotted axel options.
@@mattslumwormreyes oh ok I thought all larger frames had 130 spacing thanks alot been struggling to find a solid answer on that been wondering why I don't see anyone run smaller drivetrains just for the hell of it
@SIKIS USA - Fixed gear hubs with thread on cogs can only get as small as 12t. There are some micro drive fixed gear hubs available (9-10t), but they're generally built for FGFS and have 14mm axels.
If you're going to run it single speed you should be good to go, just look for something with 3/8ths axels or slotted. 👍
Are you able provide a list of parts?
Solid clip ! Full gas fixed gear ⚙️
Same cheap cog for 5 years? When I was a messenger a good cog lasted me 3-4 months depending on the weather (rainy and salty country!)
That rig is beautiful......I want one just like it.
Anthony - Rob’s bike rides like a dream, it’s so smooth on those chunky tires. He works at bike shop, so you know it doesn’t make a single creak or sound.
May I know what fork u are using? Thanks mate
Sick
🙌😷
Love that build so different
@@mikemann2692 Yeah, it's mad solid. You could drop it off a roof and it would be fine. haha.
Matt Reyes please don’t it’s a Nice bike
This is the best information a pro will teach u . So take all ur free info in.
What size X4 stem is that? Looks like a 100mm maybe more??
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's a 100mm
Some have mad skills .
did anyone catch what brand of fork he got ?interested in checking it out
@@Llamo- thanks🤙
Nice!
Thanks Paulo
You two could do a motivational tutor video.I fair enjoyed watching this:)
For real, Robert is a really great dude, he'd be perfect for something like that.
Great vid and insane build! I need that frame. Im pretty much 6'1" (185cm), any advice on frame size? Cant decide between 55cm and 57cm and have no way of testing one.
m4oz - I’m 6’ and ride the Medium. Rob is about the same and rides the medium as well.
m4oz I’m 6’3” & rock a 58cm.
Melbourne coverage would be dope!
This was dope coverage. Hope to see more RG!
Incredible Bike! Working on an similar Build but I have big problems finding a Frame-Fork Combo which lets you do barspins with 30C Tires. Any suggestions? Living in Germany, so small American Brands won't help me much (Couldn't understand the Brandname in the video)
oh yeahh !!!
YEAHHH BOIIIII
@@mattslumwormreyes yeahhh yeahhhh booooooiiiii
That's some sexy camera work
Haha thanks 🔍
Hi i have question. I live in Australia ( Melbourne ) so where i can build the Fixed Gear Bike ?
You should message Rob, or Max Fixed on instagram. They both work at a bike shop in Australia and could help point you in the right direction. 👍
905th like. This makes me want to buy a fixed gear bike again. My steel road bike doesn’t look as robust as his.
Get it going 👌💯. Robust builds for the win
FGFS seems dead, where do I build a bike like this now? I can't find frames or parts anywhere, seems like a lot of the companies have fallen off. In the seattle area if that helps. Love the bike.
Hey Maggie, SMC puts together a guide of where to buy parts every year. Here's a link to it - suckmycog.com/2018/12/24/fgfs-buyers-guide-2019 // MASHSF is always a solid option if you're ordering online. shop.mashsf.com
Hope this helps.
I have a set of profile elite wheels, on bmx 9t... what would I need to do to use these single speed or fixed? Had no clue 20inch wheel hubs can be used for 700c
Nice bike man!
It rides nice too. I got to ride around on it for a bit and I can honestly say it felt better than how I have my steel frame built up. Robert's build is mad dialed.
Do a bike check with Jackson Bradshaw`s Constatine Disparar
Yu Xiu Yong - That’s a good idea. I’ll have to film that with him.
Hello, great bike!!! it's spank 350 27.5 or 29 size?
29er size
Any idea what pants? They look like something from chrome. Sick bike!
Not sure what pants he's rocking, but they're definitely not Chrome. Chrome fell off in a major way and has done some serious damage to its relationship with the bike community. We stopped supporting them a while ago. Good vibes only. 💯🙌🏁
What's ur camera set on this rec? Great images!
I filmed this on a Sony A7III - All settings set to standard. I have fun bringing it to life in the color grade.
Can someone tell me the name or the model of his glasses?!!!!
Oakley Jawbreakers
A dream of a bike!
