some of those bikes ended up looking more like mtb though... there's a reason why there's a limited selection of ground and aerial tricks that you can do on a fixie, because it's not a bike meant for extreme park riding and high jumps but high speed and agility in urban streets
I ride BMX Tom was one of my best friends. I grew up with him. I filmed a lot of the shit that was my car on the cover of that video we went everywhere. I was the only one who had Bmx Bike Tom Bmx too, and he was so good at it.he just took all his Bmx skill on the fixed gear
This was incredible.👏 You did a great job at honoring Tom and providing an articulate timeline of his contributions to the fixed gear scene. Well done.
That was like the 40 year progression of bmx stuffed into a decade. From dancy flat ground tricks, to street riding, to ramps and redbull contests. Even the transition to wider bars and thicker tires. Wild.
I worked at Specialized in BMX/Dirt Jump department. I was the guy that developed the the Pfix for Matt Reyes and Jeff Dempler. It was crazy that two of the best riders lived 10 minutes from Specialized HQ. I looked at the bikes the guys were riding and used a BMX perspective to develop better components for FGFS riding. I didn’t get to work with Tom, but he was the next rider I told our team manager to go after. Weird seeing my face in this video. Thanks for the memories RIP Jeff Dempler
Hey, Im a Bmx rider and this video is really cool. What I found interesting is Tom leaving the red bull event is noteworthy, street riding is something else than proving who is the best, street is freedom
Tom was hugely influential to FTW and my personal passion for Fixedgear riding. Thank you for putting this together! This is what it takes to eternalise such a wild and beautiful side of bike riding. Bring me back to the days where getting Fixedgear specific parts into Aus was rare and special. X
This was fantastic. I'm a mountain biker only and I simply never ventured toward fixed gear. This is real art that moved me into a larger understanding of my favorite invention and joy, bikes. Nicely done.
Thank you JBall & shout out to all the riders! I started riding fxd in early 2009 and watched the evolution play out in real time. Tom was unstoppable! Seeing Kozo backflip at RideNStyle blew my mind out my ears! Big ups FGFS aint dead!
I was deep into all of this back in the day. In the southeast it wasn’t popular but there were still groups of us around Knoxville and East Tennessee that were shredding around on the regular. Alley cat racing, polo, fgfs, indie zines, broken frames, and diy punk rock shows defined a specific time in my life. I remember watching LaMarche crashes over and over, lol.
Mountain biker here, had no clue there was a freestyle scene to fixed gear. Like I know people could do a few tricks but I didn't know it was that in depth...pretty sweet!
Thanks for bringing back some great memories from back in the day with this very well made video. Back then i was one of only very few FGFS riders in my City and even won at some small trick contest and got 8th place at a RedBull event . The PFix was my first and only FGFS bike after years of riding BMX and MTB and after seeing your video it made me very proud to own one and to have never given it away. All those names and the old clips make me feel very nostalgic and make me want to try riding again after so many years. Its cool to be a part of that era. Great job on the video, i loved the editing and the naration!🤩
@@Suckmycog It was at the "RedBull - Fix und Foxi" in Vienna/Austria where u had a pole with a fox tail mounted to your bike and either had to chase the opponent and steal the tail or just overtake them and finish first. The racetrack was constructed around an iconic historical building in Viennas biggest park. I was one of two riders on 26" FGFS and the changed the rules for the following years to only allow 700c. RedBull has a short recap of the event th-cam.com/video/9ulDvMTBqGo/w-d-xo.htmlsi=97ohLBO89P0KS0uQ you can watch.
What a trip down memory lane! I was working in shops in Seattle when Keo and John Watson were cutting their teeth and got to meet both of them. Such a cool scene to watch grow!!
This is an extreme well done documentary! It was informative as well as entertaining. The only problem I have with it is that too short! This should have been made as a feature length film. And the problem isn’t really a problem, it’s just that good whereas I didn’t want it to end! Great job!
such a great documentary. I wasn't familiar with Tom, but was familiar with the scene during those years and even dabbled in some fgfs myself. I learnt a lot, good work.
dude this video brings back so many good memories! My nieghboor from back in the day hooked me up with my first fgfs bike, ill never forget it! his name was Joe McKeag. He was good at riding but moved away not to long after I met him. I wonder what happened to him. You should look into him haha he had sponsors and stuff. Solid dude fursure.
Great job 👏 JBall. Dig the documentary style with the voice over. Haven’t seen all his stuff but am always blown away whenever I see any of his clips. He kind of reminds me of Trey jones like Tom was the fgfs Trey since they have a similar style of looking at stuff that most might not.
Stumbled upon your channel from this video and I like the content. Tip for the next videos you do in the series would be cool if you'd link some of the mentioned videos in the description for ease of use to access if someone wants to see the originals in full length.
I remember watching them ride at the Brooklyn banks jam back when I was maybe 15 and just thought how are they able to do that on that huge bike while I couldn’t on a small bmx bike 😂😂
I have a grainy video that I saved in 2008, of a guy on a fixed gear doing a sprocket stall. Having watched this and the that video, I am sure it as Tom.
Tom’s one of my best friends grew up riding with him I film some of these clips crazy part is you have no idea how good he was a Bmx to and delco born and raised
I thought fgfs was pretty silly till I watched one of his charge videos. I watched the way he ride fixed and knew I wanted to try it, something about the bmx style tricks on the wrongest possible bike just made sense to me 😂
I'm not in the fixie scene at all but found this very engaging. Did I miss the clip in the thumbnail? I want to see that footage, thats an insane drop ive only seen skaters attack.
Thanks for watching! The thumbnail photo is interesting cause it was actually one of the last photos of Tom before he quit riding. The clip was supposed to be in a WRAHW full length video that never released, so the clip just exists in the ether somewhere.
This is really impressive to do that on a fixed gear, the timing required to bunny hop on time. But I can't help but notice that these bikes are starting to look like bmx bikes, to basically do bmx tricks ? No saltiness , just a question 😊

As a BMX rider who has no ideas that the fixed scene even existed like this. I think that this is a very cool, informative video.

Thank you for your service!
Hey, Im a Bmx rider and this video is really cool. What I found interesting is Tom leaving the red bull event is noteworthy, street riding is something else than proving who is the best, street is freedom
It's wild to me that in 2008 people are trying out things like wider tyres and handlebars when mountain bikes already had existed for decades.

Wow. This is fantastic. On top of everything else, Tom is one of the nicest and most genuine people you will ever meet.

The perfect video essay for Tom; incredible work ball
Just sat with a coffee and enjoyed every second of that. Thanks Bro

Which Red Bull event?

I ride bmx and absolutely love all bikes so this is just plain awesome
Let's go! This is amazing. Great job putting this together.
Great job Jonathan! This was such an enjoyable watch! Plus La Marche is still crushing it with his handmade frames. Hell yeah!
Thanks Danimal!!
i’m late to fgfs and have learnt some but it’s great to have you piece it all together
What a trip down memory lane! I was working in shops in Seattle when Keo and John Watson were cutting their teeth and got to meet both of them. Such a cool scene to watch grow!!
I didn't plan to watch this whole video...but I just did.
Well done.
What a great recap! There should be giant, glossy posters of all the fgfs greats mentioned in this video.
This was SO well done! 🫡 Awesome trip down memory lane.

I appreciate your kind words 🙏
You’re absolutely right. He and tony fast were the best in my eyes back when I was a little fgfs madman. 2006-2011 was a lot of fun for me on bikes.
es increible el dominio de el aro 29, felicitaciones tom, desbloqueaste un nuevo dessfio
yo this is amazing, love the concept and hope to see more legend profiles for sure laying out the history
🙏
Crazy good video, this deserve way more attention of the fixed gear scene
such a great documentary. I wasn't familiar with Tom, but was familiar with the scene during those years and even dabbled in some fgfs myself. I learnt a lot, good work.
Thank you for watching 🙏
Next level content jball! Would love to see a Ed Wonka piece
Love the format! Very informative for me as a newcomer. Thank you for making this one, looking forward and waiting for upcoming ones 🙌🏼

So sick! Joe was like a big brother for me, we're still friends.
Great job 👏 JBall. Dig the documentary style with the voice over. Haven’t seen all his stuff but am always blown away whenever I see any of his clips.

Loved the doc! Great work!!!!
Great video! Cool to get an insight into this scene.
Thanks for watching!
What an absolute legend🙏🏾🙏🏾 love this documentary
Kinda like the rollerblading of the bike world.
The scenes are oddly tight knit
XDDD
Beautiful movie and straight to the point👍 mind blown 🤯

Good idea. You can check out most of the projects Tom has been involved in on this page:

Really neat video!!
Me over here just trying to remember to keep pedaling on my fixie and there's these guys...
This was fantastic to watch. Well done.
Super fun to watch. Thanks.
Amazing video!
Guessing Tom was the birth of JBall during his career stint with Bombtrack Bikes and the Incredible riding he was doing on the Divide.
This is what we needed
I still have a copy of bootleg sessions!
Which one??
Very enjoy this ty
I just noticed how far apart bmx and fixi scene is even if it is the same just with a different bike
This shits incredible
The speed and size of BMX with the tech of skateboarding
Hats off
Lmao. What?
@@benw4401 bmx is easy
Skateboarding is hard
Fixie tricks are hard
@@Unoriginal3 ohhh, you are a moron. I get it now.

Amazing
Anyone know where I can buy one of those invisible helmets?
I'm not in the fixie scene at all but found this very engaging.

When I think of Tom I think of pink Deep V’s. RIP KEO!!!
This was so good
Used to ride BMX with Tom
Yessss!!!

What a loser ass comment, go outside

why do you like fixed bikes insted of mtb street or bmx bikes?
Fixed drivechain is fun, big bikes are fun, bikes look cool.
