    Honestly, I have so much respect for this show’s choice to resurrect a character and NOT have it be immediately a-okay. There’s a toll, and consequences that will take time to work through. So many stories resurrect people with no sense of weight or cost.
    So even though it’s an insanely dark story choice, I love the reveal about heaven.

    SMG really sold the performance that she was shell-shocked from being in heaven instead of hell. She does it so well that when she finally tells Spike it 100% tracks with her behavior/sparse lines. Her saying ‘longer’ when Spike asked how long it was for her gives me chills

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan ปีที่แล้ว +97

    Its not just the fact that she was torn out of heaven. I think the way Buffy says "By my friends" also shows the depth of the fact that she has issues over the fact that she was buried alive (and who knows how many other issues over the years now hitting her to the point of full force depression) which has been a fear of hers since she's started being the slayer and the audience has known about since 1x10 _Nightmares._

      @Buffy8Fan หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@lessismore8533 While I agree with the point of your comment reguarding the "nightmare," I have a small correction reguarding the rest: _The Gift_ was never the meant to be the series finale. Most Buffy seasons were written in a way where if the show got cancelled the seasons could be their last without any major hang up storylines. But in that episode's case, the distributing rights became UPN ownership and there has been confusion to this day due to Buffy dying in-universe about whether or not it was ever the series finale. Behind the scenes issues could have made it that way, but it was never intended to be by Joss's writing plans.

    That Buffy told Spike the truth, that shows just how much she trusts him, and how connected to him she feels. In fact it shows she feels more connected to Spike right now than to any of her friends. So, for the "why would they assume Buffy was in a hell dimension?" It's because the last time somebody got sacrificed to close a hell-portal (Angel and Ecathla's portal in season 2) that's what happened. Glory was trying to open a portal to her home (presumably hell) dimension and they were worried that's what happened. It's notable that in Ep 1 they never talk in certainties, just "what if" and aren't willing to chance her being trapped.

    • @MsMaggyW
      @MsMaggyW ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Barnaby. They were in denial. Angel physically went through a portal, Buffy did not. She did not go through a portal, she just died. On Buffy and Angel every other dimension has been about going through physically.

    • @odkres
      @odkres ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Angel was totally different, I don't think he even died per se, he just was sucked in the portal and transported to the other "hell" dimension. Buffy just died, wasn't sucked into anywhere, her body was actually there the whole time. Her soul/essence/spirit was then sent to some afterlife plane, pretty christian-like heaven so I guess it works similarly. So why would a slayer, who's only ever fought the good fight unselfishly, go to hell after she dies? But yeah, I get the Scoobies don't know as much as we the audience, particularly about Angel. I guess it's only natural that they picture the worst-case scenario.

  • @DucktorDoom
    @DucktorDoom ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Honestly...I think the Scoobies convinced themselves Buffy was in hell because they wanted her back and her being in hell would make it okay for them to resurrect her. No one even brings up that she might be in hell until Xander starts questioning the plan in 6x01, which prompts Willow (who I think wanted Buffy back most of all and thus had already talked herself into the idea that Buffy was probably lost or miserable and therefore needed saving) to bring up the possibility, and now in this episode they're all so certain that's where she was. Because when you really desperately want something, but on some level you know it's wrong, you'll look for any justification to make it okay so you can feel good about it. And if someone (like Willow) hands you a justification, you grab onto it and don't let go.

    After Life was a great episode where Buffy reveals to Spike that was pulled out of Heaven, (foreshadowing here when Buffy said before 'is this hell) We see Buffy again experiencing her depression, which from the death of Joyce onwards is always there. She says to Giles in S5 Finale The Gift, ' I don't want to live in a world like this if these are the choices, if everything keeps getting stripped away'. Spike also reveals in S5 episode Fool For Love 'every slayer has a death wish, even you'. Buffy is obviously not the same since coming back, she has been torn out of heaven, and does not know how to deal with life now. Of course she was right when she said to Dawn at end of The Gift ' the hardest thing in this world is to live in it' and she was right. Great acting from both SMG and James Marsters in this episode, we can see the Spuffy relationship growing. The Willow/Tara situation has been brewing for a while, with Willow taking risks with magic. This is very much the 'Willow' Season. This episode sets up a great Season arc.

    With regards to why worried she was in a hell dimension, it's because of how she died. Glory was opening a portal to her home hell dimension and Buffy jumped into it. Early in the season they mention that her death wasn't a natural death and that that changed things. So even if she was 'meant' to go to heaven, she may not have made it. Willow thought Buffy might've been in a Hell Dimension because Angel ended up in one after being sent through a wormhole. Buffy dived into the light from the tower so they assumed her soul went to wherever Glory was from.
    The consequences for the spell and Buffy returning has one hell of a consequence later on, the Hitchhiker Ghost is nothing compared to what is coming.

    I love how they handle Buffy resurrection. Yeah, she is back. But is that really a good thing? I also love the meta commentary that she was finished, over. Cause we did had a " WB series finale" at the time and season five works perfecrly as an actual series finale. But she is back, picked by another network even after she was "finished". And I always took the fact the open ends with Buffybot as another way of saying that Buffy story was over.

    There's not 1 specific demon. Many demons can travel between dimensions, and some can hitch a ride when someone else is travelling. It is not specific to bringing someone back to life.
    Also, that's not what happened, the magic actually created a demon. Magic always has a price. Bringing a Slayer back to life, being balanced by creating a demon, seems balanced to me.

    The line does run through Faith now, according to Joss, although it's still vague. There is speculation that another slayer won't be called unless Faith AND Buffy die, i.e. there won't be 2 slayers indefinitely moving forward. This is an anomaly and both slayers need to b out of the picture for the line to continue.

    So the reasoning I came to of why the Scooby Gang assumed she was in hell and helped me understand what their thought process might have been was that after all this time they have fought supernatural beings and seen so much proof that “hell. is. real.” And it’s constantly coming after them. There has been absolutely ZERO proof that a heaven COULD exist. They have seen so much pain and death. They literally just lost their best friend to a GOD from a hell dimension. The only Angel they’ve ever seen was a demon. He had a soul but is a demon all the same. So was the jump to Buffy being in hell quick? Yes. But the logical leap of people automatically going to hell feels way shorter than the hope of a heaven.

    In The Gift (5x22) she threw herself into the portal to Glory's hell dimension.
    That's a reasonable reason. I mean, yes, we see her body on the ground afterwards, but hey maybe the hell dimension grabbed her soul while she was in free-fall or something.

    The only experience the Scooby Gang has with closing a portal like the one Glory opened was when Angel was sent to a hell dimension so their assumptions make sense. This show is not big on the Christian conception of a compassionate god. There are plenty of demons but no actual angels or anything like that.
    What I find interesting about this episode is that it shows how much Dawn has grown because she was the only one, apart from maybe Spike, who seemed to sense the truth of what Buffy was going through and gave her the idea to lie her friends so she could get the space she needs right now.

    Be prepared as so much drama is coming down the line, and not all of it, actually not much of it fun. But this is the most meaningful philosophical season which questions the identities of the big characters.
    It's very allegorical of depression, and questions the meaning of life. Buffy being ripped from Heaven-. Her only confidant is another demon who was previously her nnemosis. She acts soon in self destructive patterns that most of us do when we might be severely depressed or suicidal. Also that despite everything they know about the world full of magic and demons, the scoobies didn't believe in Heaven or have faith Buffy would be there. They became so codependent on her, and Willow primarily selfish to push her magic to darkness to resurrect her.
    Buffys' previous life, full of abandonment, dying, loss, Angel/Angelus, her mother's death etc and the constant battle to survive. Glory and the threat to Dawn, cptsd essentially. She was then at peace for that sacrifice and at peace from trauma. Ripped back into reality is therefore a depressive hell. I find it interesting as Tara is not possessed by the hitchhiker Demon, because as this season shows, Tara is a the purest of heart. All of the other scoobies are corruptible.
    Enjoy what's ahead but be prepared that some shocking but also some of the absolute best episodes are coming up as the new network allowed the storylines to be much darker and deeper. Partially it questions what and who is good, and bad. Makes us think deeply about our own place and beliefs.

  • @freshPrincess626
    @freshPrincess626 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The reveal of Buffy’s trauma and depression being bc she’d been resurrected out of Heaven instead of some assumed hellish dimension was such a great setup + subversion bc it plays on our-and the other characters’-living people pov that being alive is automatically better than being dead-bc the prospect of dying, esp too young, is a primal fear, mostly bc, whatever our spiritual beliefs (or lack thereof), we dk EXACTLY what comes after (if anything).
    So the Scoobies-esp Willow, who was rationalizing her butt off both before and after the resurrection-assumed only the worst about where Buffy’s soul was, bc she died supernaturally, and that (aside from the asinine lack of thought to exhume her body first 🙄) ultimately they did a Good Thing, FOR Buffy, and she’d soon be happy to be alive, and back to her old self again-she was rescued from a scary netherworld, she was “back home”, she was with the people who love her…
    Actually she was not only finally free of all the harrowing Slayer drama but was swathed in eternal, perfect, peaceful bliss until you ripped her out and brought her back…here, which might as well be Hell by comparison

    I know you likely won't see this comment given the reaction was over a year ago. But from a writer perspective, I see the reason why Buffy felt comfortable enough to tell Spike that she was pulled, ripped out of Heaven in a different fashion then most. ...As Spike is a vampire, becoming a vampire meant that he would never be able to enter Heaven. Not to mention his long-running evilness. He would be the only person remotely capable of even grasping what it was that she lost because he too lost the chance to go to Heaven. He's at least at some point faced the reality of that. None of her friends even have the capacity to fathom this loss. While I think the scene could have been better written, that context choice in choosing to have her confess to Spike was phenomenal due to this.

And it's only really in s4 in Restless. Where they are all dreaming but you could head canon that Buffy was able to resist and fight the First Slayer because of that slayer dream "power". Also, in s7 they could have maybe had the Potentials start having dreams. Or have those pre-credit scenes of potentials being hunted down continue throughout the season, before Giles brings them, then cut to Buffy waking up cos she's been seeing it happen in her dreams, then double cut to Faith waking up too and that's how you bring Faith into the season. Listen to her tone and note her energy/vibe when she says specific words. She’s not thanking Willow.

    William was a very gentle and delicate soul with a heightened sense of intuition. He was an empath. That type of natural power stays in the fiber of your being.
    Therefore, his demon perfected the power and crafted it in a way where he reads people and situations and knows how to manipulate the situation.
    But the echoes of William that's engrained in his brain come around when someone he likes is in emotional crisis.
    He said it to Dawn in season 5, that he hates seeing Summers women suffer. He had a great bond with Joyce too.
    Spike is everything! He's the adult voice of reason so that's why they cut him out of their plans.
    You noticed right away that Willow is acting entitled and cocky.
    I saw the beginnings of change when she killed the doe, and then omitted that fact when the gang questioned her about the spell.
    If I'm not mistaken, Buffy only spoke 3 words when she came back, and that was to Dawn.
    She fully conversated with Spike. He used their shared experience to relate to her and get her to relax enough to speak up.
    ...so much that she trusted him to keep her secret.
    Season 6 is my favorite and season 5 is second. The others follow after with one being the bottom season for me.

  • @Saan42

    I think it makes sense that they thought she was in hell - she literally dived into a portal that led straight into a hell dimension.
    The show doesn't act as though human religion is real as such. Yes, religious symbols are an issue for vampires, but it's not suggested that this is because god as a creator of the universe exists. Similarly, as far as we can tell from various discussions in Buffy and AtS, "heaven" means an individual heavenly dimension amongst the many, many dimensions that exist. So it's not "heaven" and "hell" as the two options after death, it's "a hell dimension" and "a heavenly dimension" out of all the different options that exist.
    Having said all of that, I definitely also believe that their personal desires to have Buffy back, and Willow's personal need to feel like a saviour played massively into their decision here.

    • @9ansean
      @9ansean ปีที่แล้ว

      All well said. It's worth remembering that Whedon is an admitted atheist. So that's bound to make the supernatural working quite different from traditional religious teachings. There doesn't seem to be any one force for creating or opposition.
      This isn't a world that started as a paradise before the fall. It's one were demons stalked the earth before humans. The First Evil is the closeting thing to a demonic a singular demonic entity that predates the rest, but even they have competition from other forces like the Senior Partners. The only official God the Scoobies have meet ruled a hell dimension. It's not clear if any of them are even aware of the Powers that Be and even they've often made decisions that are harmful to those who serve them. Godly and satanic figures both come off like jerks.
      The last point is more crucial to this seasons overall story arch.
