There's only one logical step now: you have to listen to "To hell and back" as Joakim went on record to say that's his favourite song to perform

The story behind the bit before Swedish Pagans: Somewhere around 2012-2013 they were playing a show and on that tour the song was not part of the setlist. The audience started to sing the melody of Swedish Pagans during the show which wouldn't have been a problem but Thobbe Englund started playing the melody on guitar and Joakim got a little mad. He angrily asked Thobbe what the fuck he was doing as the song was not on the setlist to which Thobbe just replied that it's a good song. Not sure if they played it or not but afterwards they found the whole incident funny and decided to keep doing that in the future.
Joakim stated in an interview that he doesn't hate the song but thinks they have better songs he'd rather play but because the audience wants it, they play it. It was good when they first recorded it but it has slowly lost its magic for him.
Also the song was only a bonus track when they re-released the album Art of War and is not about military history but rather about Scandinavian mythology. The band never thought the fans would get into the song so when they actually started to sing that during the shows they were really surprised.
Also about Thobbe's gear during this show, from what I've seen he seems to be using either a Line6 Relay G10 or Sennheiser XSW-D wireless which is odd because, well, Wacken... huge stage... under $350 wireless system... yeah... I'm sure I saw the type of wireless transmitter both of those units use on his guitar.
Also, do Panzerkampf (about Germanys oh so successful invasion of USSR in 1943), Talvisota ("Winter war" in English, Finland vs USSR in 1939-1940) or White Death (Best sniper of all time, Simo Häyhä, with over 500 kills during the Winter war (which lasted only 4 months)

What a great load of information! These are the types of comments that should be winning awards. Hahaha
And yeah, a festival like Wacken, you’d better have the best wireless transition you can get. It seems like Thobbe was never of fan of fancy high end shit. Just give him the stuff that gets the job done and he’s happy. Haha

This is Sabaton's "'the crowd will riot if we don't play it" song, everybody is going crazy during it. Swedish Pagans is the song we all wait for the band to play and would be disappointed if they don't. Last year in Paris, we sang it while waiting for the band to come on stage, it's always a special feeling when everybody in a crowd is singing all together. I really miss this. I don't think Joakim hates the song, it's more of a joke than anything else. I could be wrong of course! ^^'
Great video again, it doesn't feel like it lasts 19 minutes at all. Can't wait to see what song you're gonna do next week and I'm happy you aren't stopping the Sabaton Satursdays yet!

Sabaton doesn't *do* seats if they can help it. They will do standing only. Swedish Pagans will get you going, but if you want one that is going to just drive the whole crowd's energy up? Primo Victoria will do it. Such a killer song, and there's a killer acappella version as well. This was a fun video, and i'm looking forward to seeing more of your journey with this band.

    • @karaspangenberg1435

I feel like getting out of your seat is more of a figure of speech, but I have been to a show where there was seating in the back of the venue. Not sure if they stood for the song cause I was on the barricade. 😅

But if you do Primo Victoria, pleas do not take the "Remade" video. They released around the time they made the "Bismarck" Video and teamed up with wargames. Primo Victory is one of their biggest songs, maybe even their breakthrough, it is about the Operation overlord, the allies invasion in France. And as Wargaming has a game called "World of tanks" an Sabaton even have their signature tank in it they teamed up again but if you ask me, they choose the wrong song (and the sound effects and the production are not too good as well). Panzer Bataillon or Ghost Division would have been the way better choice.

Call me a heretic, but I get even more out of a concert if I'm in a seat. The bass line causes the seat back to vibrate, which vibrates through my chest at double intensity.
You can't get that from anything other than a concert. That's why watching live performance recordings are usually less interesting to me. You only hear the music instead of experiencing it.

  • @prashantsarkar821
    @prashantsarkar821 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

Sabaton's relationship with this song is pretty crazy. They didn't expect it to be a hit, so they released it as a bonus track. But at one of their shows, much to the band's surprise, the entire crowd started chanting it. So they performed it. The part about Joakim hating has become a bit at this point. But I'm not sure if he hated it in the beginning.

My favorite pre song banter for Swedish Pagans was from their show in Nantes, France in 2015. Quoth Joakim, “I’m in trouble now. I know what happens in France when you people don’t get democracy. You start chopping people’s heads off for fuck’s sake! So if you agree to spare my life, we’re going to play you this song.”
(Edit: When you get to Carolus Rex, the official live video was shot in the band’s hometown of Falun, and thus sung in Swedish. Much like the concert video for En Livstid i Krig, there are subtitles/ captions available in English. I think it was part of Sabaton Open Air, but don’t quote me on that part.)

They are in Russia in 2016, Tommy is new to a band, and Joakim let him pick any Sabaton song he want to play it. Crowd start crying "Hill" for Hill 3234, but Joakim says to crowd "No, no, no. He have to choose not you. You don't have a f**ing democracy here". ROFL.

When I saw them live in NYC a couple of years ago, people literally sat on the floor and started rowing in rhythm while chanting. Blew my mind. My ears stopped ringing two days later. My voice came back on the third day. The amount of energy they impart their audience is UNREAL.

Great reaction Tank, as always, very enjoyable. A bit clarification about the norse mythology - Fenris is the giant wolf, who's son will devourer the sun. They manage to capture him with the magic chain Gleipne, but first after one of the gods (Tyr) put his arm into his jaws as ensurance. When Fenris realized he was captured, he bit the arm off. The serpent is Jormundgand, and is actually a sibling to Fenris. Its so big so it reach around the whole world and bites itself in its tail. At the end of days, Thor will slay the serpent, but drops dead nine steps later, poisoned by the serpent.
Fun note - on most of the runestones in Sweden, the runes are always drawn inside the serpent, that are hold in place by ingraved knots.
Looking forward to next saturday :)

Just a comment on the berzerker thing. The word in swedish is "bärsärk" which is the two words "bär" (older word for bear. We say björn now) and "särk" (a kind of shirtlike undergarment) joined. So, it´s sort of meaning that you clothe yourself with the form (and really bad mood) of an angry bear. Legend has it that some dudes would eat a certain kind of poisonous mushroom to get in that state. Cheers!

I'm here as a Berserker 'descendant'! Let me explain: In 1984 I saw Gary Numan at the Bristol Hippodrome during his UK Berserker Tour: in 2019 I was checking out my old music interests, including Numan/Tubeway Army on TH-cam. Knowing he had released work under the Dark Wonders label I haphazardly typed that into the search engine. Nightwish's Dark Chest of Wonders did indeed appear but Storytime got me and Floor's married to Hannes etc. The rest, as they say, is (military) history!

But something more interesting, Tina Guo had a meet and greet the next day in the morning where I went. I can't remember everything, well I was pretty hung over and it was like 10 in the morning. There she told, that the gig with Sabaton and Beyond the Black with she played on that day was pretty spontaneous. She had like only a few days to learn the songs, to match the choreography of the band and they didn't even had time to rehearse any of this.
She watched a ton of live recordings, either official or smartphone recorded, to learn the stageplay as quickly as possible.

TankTheTech: Berserkers typically ate shrooms before going into combat and that's how they could sustain that much energy, fearlessness and strength. Many instances in recorded history where the Vikings had to push through odds they normally wouldn't succeed in doing used drugged up Berserkers.

There is a old brew that the viking wisemen sometimes made and gave warriors before they sailed off. It contained a bit of hallucenogenic herbs aswell as a (highly dangerous) prepared dose of Spotted Toadstool (extremely poisonous nerve-affecting shroom), and if the mix was right, then the hallucinogenics would heighten thier bloodlust while the nerve-affecting agents of the toadstool would work as a pain nullifier. Meaning wounds that caused enough pain (if not raw damage) to lay low any man, had no effect on them. For 15-30 minutes the only way to stop these drugfueled butchers would've been to cause enough bloodloss or direkt hit to brain or heart. It had a decent chance to missfire due to varying dosage of the toadstool in the brew, quite often leading the berserkers to succumb to the toxin after the raid, usually within 2-3h of imbibement.

My mother's parents were both full blooded Swedes 1-2 generations removed from Sweden. A relative has traced my grandmother's side of the family back to the 1600's in Kristdala. We still have cousins that live there. My grandfather's side of the family I'm not as sure of, but I do know his family is from further north in Sweden. So, while I may have a stronger claim to being a descendant of a berserker than some of those that have told you that they are, I'm not going to claim I am. However, with my temper, I wouldn't doubt it. It's like a blind rage that borders on being possessed.
That being said I love your reactions. I love how you see things from the production side of the music. Not many people reacting see things from that perspective in the same way you do.

The intro is probably the CATCHIEST of Sabaton melodies. For example, I’ll randomly start humming the melody at home and my fiancé will hear me and then it gets stuck in her head for HOURS. 😂🤘🏻
Also, when I saw them live in NYC, the entire pit STOPPED, and dropped to the floor and started rowing like they were rowing a viking ship (I’m sure you’ve seen that before in the pits). It was an incredible experience.

But catchy intro is all that the song has. Without that catchy intro nobody would really care about the song.

Sabaton also tells stories from the darker sides of history. You should check out "Inmate 4859." It tells the story of a Polish man who endured hell in Auschwitz just to bring attention to what was happening. The story is amazing, but ultimately very tragic. Consider this one for a future reaction.

I started my Sabaton adventure after seeing them live several years ago when they were touring with another band I listen to. Their stage presence had me instantly hooked and this song is just killer live! 🤘🏻

Wiki: The Old Norse form of the word was berserkr (plural berserkir). It likely means "bear-shirt" (compare the Middle English word serk, meaning shirt), "someone who wears a coat made out of a bear's skin"

Hey! There is a great song that Sabaton has called Angels Calling. Now, the rewrote the tempo as to record it with another band called Apocalyptica. This version is badass. It uses cellos and Sabaton in such a beautiful way that it makes me tear up all the time. Its jut extremely powerful!
Also ayyo? I see Powerwolf recommended there-

I think you should do Cliffs of Gallipoli next. Honestly I think the studio version of the song is actually better than any live performance I've seen, and that's because I believe that the song was released right around when they lost their keyboard player, so most live performances of it don't have the keyboard, which is *integral* to Cliffs of Gallipoli. It's honestly one of their best songs imo, def top 3-4.

Not seen in this performance: a semi regular occurrence during performances of Swedish Pagans is rows of fans sitting on the ground and "rowing", as if rowing an invisible Viking ship.

Also I just want to add, Sabaton might not have official videos for a fair amount of songs, but they love the fan made videos. Joakim basically said something along the lines of, they did the hard work of making a video and it costs us nothing (there is an interview, I want to say on their official youtube page where they address fan made content)

Viking themed awsome metal: Brothers of metal from Falun, the same as Sabaton.. BROTHERS OF METAL, one of Scandinavia’s most promising new bands. The 8-piece, hailing from Falun, Sweden consists of three vocalists (two male, one female), three guitar players, a bass player and a drummer. Their sound: A thunderous, catchy mixture of power metal, irresistible melodies, heavy riffs and some folkish elements; or as they used to call it - “True Heavy Metal”. Can recommend Njord, and Yggdrasil. Link for Njord: th-cam.com/video/hPvh6UgJtRw/w-d-xo.html Link for Yggdrasil: th-cam.com/video/v5yYMjU8xDg/w-d-xo.html Awsome band 😀😀👍 Let’s goooooo

As some suggested, if you're going after more viking metal, listen to Brothers of Metal. Badass songs are "Njord" (The god of the sea and weather), "Powersnake" (The midgards snake), "Chain breaker" (Fenrisulven), "Prophecy of Ragnarök"... Definitely looking forward to see them live, when those days return!

yea you pretty much got it in one with the berserker thing, the way they used to fight is they did fight in armour or they fought in jsut a cloth or boots, but it was a person who got so crazed in the battle and wanting to fight they often ran screaming that the gods where with them and they would smash straight into the shield walls and terrify their enemies as they would get cut and struck with weapons but would shrug it off, there has been tales that they have carried on fighting even if a fatal blow has been giving due to the adrenaline corasing through there veins.....although most of the time they were incredibly drunk and off their face on drugs as most of the time the armies where before battles
