12:27 That's because you've been spoiled by Sabaton as a continent-sweeping powerhouse, but bands don't start that way. Sometimes they start as a bunch of awkward metalheads who just want to play cool shit, and then accidentally stumble upon something rare and unique that ends up turning them INTO a continent-sweeping powerhouse.
You've also now unlocked permission to watch Sabaton memes... Cuz Meme-o Victoria is the most popular one lol.

to think they managed to go from a handful of people in 2005 to the ocean at woodstock poland in only a matter of years is insane. to think those guys if off the rack leather would go on to double stage wacken is just mindblowing.

Something I find really striking about this -- putting myself in Joakim's shoes, for example. Can you imagine being out on to the stage 7 years after that 2005 show, to perform the same song, looking out over a sea of 550k people? They all look so happy. I don't know if this was Sabaton's first "big" headlining show (probably not), perhaps they had already "made it" before this, but it still must have been so surreal for them.

    • @brigidtheirish

I dont listen to sabaton at home, but every chance to see them live ... im There. You have to be there. Jumping in that crowd. Feeling Joakims energy and happiness that he sends out! I love seeing this one next to a more recent performance to see how their performance has progressed. Not just their gear and production has increased, but you can see such a massive difference in Joakim's performance. His diction and stage presence are on a whole different level now. It lets you really appreciate how much they've progressed.

    • @Hellowenisti86
      @Hellowenisti86 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Joakim has massively improved stage presence but in my opinnion vocals had a bit more edge at the earlier version. But ofc all in all the more recent version is much better. :)

@@Hellowenisti86 I prefer the clearer diction. To my mind, it work better for actually telling the stories of the songs, and the clarity with which he manages to communicate is very impressive given his lack of formal training and that most of the time he's not even singing in his native language.

@@Hellowenisti86 Well, he used to be a smoker, and maybe that has something to do with it. A lot of people who smoke develop a kind of roughness to their voice, but if they give it up, that will become less over time due to healing from the smoke damage. It could be that it's just no longer a quality of his voice because of that.

Don't diss the hair too badly. He can't help it; it's cultural. It's such a cliché that in Denmark, to this day, we call mullets 'svenskerhår' or 'Swedish hair' in English. Although, to be fair, I think that expression comes from the eighties, so I don't know... I do prefer the current getup.

I'm so old that I attended that 2005 concert. This was my very first year at SRF. I went there to see Dream Theater, Rob Rock, Therion, and Yngwie Malmsteen. Some of the other bands that played that year were Accept, Angra, Anthrax, Megadeth, Motörhead, Within Temptation, Behemoth, Hammerfall, Kansas, Dio, Mötley Crüe and Pagan's Mind.
I think I watched their gig from a bit of distance, since I never heard about them before. They've come so far since then, and they deserve all their success from all their hard work for over 20 years.

Was lucky enough to see Sabaton twice (around 2008) when they were still playing in smaller locations compared to now. Just in a small space with a couple hundred people. To this day these concerts are under my absolute favorite concert experiances. The whole band makes the crowd feel so welcome and part of the performance. In one of these concerts Joakim inveted a litte boy on stage (probably between 10 and 14 years old) who was on his first metal concert with his dad. Then they played another song with the boy on stage having a great time.
The next concert Joakim saw a guy in the crowd wearing a jacket exactly like his. He invited him on stage and actually traded jackets with him. You could really feel how they were having a good time and enjoying being on stage. This is what really made me fall in love with the band.

Fun fact, when I talked to the band members they asked me if I knew a guy who had moved from the Aland Islands to Falun. Yep I knew and I am a friend of said guy. When Sabaton was looking for a keyboard player in the beginning they asked my friend 'cause they knew he was talented and had played with Joe Lynn Turner and some other known musicians. My friend had gotten to know the guys in Sabaton while working with kids and teenagers in Falun. Since the next Sabaton song is in Swedish I've taken the liberty of translating it for you now that it's finally released.
Will hopefully be helpful in getting the mood and tone of the song. :) (p.s. I also posted it as a side-by-side translation in the TankChase discord, in #learn-languages-with-metal)
    Honored the royal guard stand.
Established by the father of our country.
    Dedicated service for 500 years.
From the march over Bält. (note: reference to when the Swedish army marched across the frozen water to invade Denmark)
Fought at Lund, on the fields of Narva.
    They follow in heroes tracks.
Forged by fire and dala-blood. (note: dala is an abbreviation of dalarna, the "state" in Sweden where they were formed, and also where Sabaton are from)
    Frozen ground and heroism.
In a time of war they stood.
    Founded with but 16 men.
    The kingdom's oldest combat unit.
    A time.
    Of war.
    Wherever the road may lead.
To protect, the royal guard swore.
For king and country they dedicate their lives.

Like maybe taking a song & playing it first in one then the other language, and compare/contrast? That's highly doable i think.. but every song on the album is so awesome, which to choose. Not sure you'd be able to play both albums in one stream. Or that it would be that entertaining to do so (for me yes, but not everyone is such a grizzled Sabaton fan). Whatever you decide, always soooooo happy to see more of your reactions to my fave bands (Blind Guardian, Sabaton, Demons & Wizards). Thank you for all you do!!! 🤘😎🤘

It's interesting seeing the first do nothing for you, because I experienced the same thing when i watched you double react to 40:1 yesterday. I adore 40:1 and if I'm not listening to the album version I'm watching the Woodstock performance. But when you reacted to the Wacken performance first, which I'd never seen... I sat there feeling disappointed. It felt lacklustre and flat and I had no idea why; I've loved every other Wacken performance I've seen of Sabaton's, I love 40:1, they had old members and were using both stages for crying out loud! Why did it feel so hollow? Then you reacted to Woodstock and oh my god, it just does not compare. Five hundred and fifty THOUSAND Polish metalheads losing their minds over a song about their country's oft-overlooked historical triumphs, while the band feed off that insane energy... it just elevates the performance beyond anything that can be replicated. Sabaton at Woodstock was Sabaton Transcendent.

He'd received laugher...

First of all, Sabaton released a album called Fist for Fight back in 2001 which was awesome with some songs that are classical power metal and listened to it before going to watch Sabaton that summer of 2005 at Gates of Metal in Hultsfred in Sweden. One of the best shows I have been at since they didnt play on the big stage. Now that might sound weird but it was a bit odd. The played on the secondary stage which was under roof, like this dance area with a stage to it. And that entire place just erupted and screamed along with the lyrics. It was quite amazing. Also the same festival I realized just how great Children of Bodom is live and how crappy Dimmu Borgir was.

Personally I would have to say that their live shows get exponentially better over time.
In terms of album quality though, I fell like we've hit the bad side of the formulaic curve with their output. Their Carolus Rex album is impeccable. And though I did enjoy Heroes, the 2 subsequent albums have one or two good songs (to my ears of course) at best.
Still they bring so much awesome and historical awareness and representation to the table, that even if a song were bad, it is amazing in its own merits.
