I was just getting clean from a crazy drug fueled spell that ranged from the early 70s to about 1980-81 when I first discovered Randy Rhoades. I began playing guitar in the early 60s and became quite good until I was introduced to the drug scene. It wasn't long before I lost my job and began loosing all my music equipment in pawn shops and so on. My first few listens of Randy impressed and inspired me to the max, to clean up my act and get a job and ahold of another guitar and amp. I have continued playing ever since, with no drugs or alcohol involvment. I was thourghly and totally devastated when I heard of Randy's death. A good part of that memory and devastation has lasted in my head all these years.
I was even shocked too learn later, that I had shared a lunch table at a crowded Burger King with Randy in Hollywood California after he had just turned 16 and I had just turned 18. I had no idea who he was back then.
I have always wondered what would be if he had not died so young. Randy will always be my main guitar hero until my time comes!!!

B24-5150 the thing with Randy that’s so amazing is that though his solos are so technically demanding, he please them without even looking half the time; he plays them with absolute ease
Ozzy was smiling until he sings the "you have to listen to my words" and when he sang "words", his voice cracked and badly, he got pretty upset about it too, kept rolling but had an upset look on his face. After the solo, Ozzy was pissed at himself and nervously hoping his voice don't give out again. You can see it.

I am still in awe at how much Randy brought to music in such a short time, he will always be my favorite guitarist.
The awesome thing is that playing for Ozzy was like his chill time. Randy was a classical guitar whiz kid, and was actually going to start, his masters in classical guitar because he wanted to teach.

I've heard a lot of cover bands play Crazy Train, and they were all very talented. Why people like Randy Rhoads deserve so much praise is because of their creative genius. Playing someone else's music is one thing, but writing music is entirely different. No one can ever replace Randy Rhoads.

That should give you some general idea of song structures. A fill is in simplyfied words any short part, that is played between two other parts and is not long enough to be a real bridge.

And dont confuse the fact that they did not tour with the band and were replaced by Rudy and Tommy, for the live performances with uninformed opinion that they could have been replaced by equal caliber at the recordings because the songs DO NOT EXIST without them, all 4 of them and the chemistry that was created by that specific combination of people at that point in time. I literally ran into Ozzy in 2001, shortly before his reality show started airing. I was leaving work and my office was in the same building as a Philadelphia radio station where he was apparently doing an on-air interview. He and Sharon both graciously stayed and signed autographs for and took pictures with every fan who had gathered and waited for them. How cool is that?!? I wish I had a camera with me. Nobody had camera phones at that time. They were so nice and seemed genuinely flattered over all of the attention.

My first album I bought as a kid. It set the bar high. Remember carrying albums to your friend's house? They weren't prepared for the Guitar God Randy. They thought "oh, ok, it's just Ozzy".... To watch their eyes bulge out of their heads made carrying the album so worth it. Still a fav. RIP Randy.

I wish their were more recordings of Randy. I gurantee many others have said this, but I LOVE watching him do different things live every time and it varies significantly from studio recordings. It's so funny to me watching some serious TH-cam players squabbling about the EXACT correct way to play it from ISOLATED guitar tracks and meanwhile . ...back in reality the best stuff is really when Rhoads imporovises it differently live.

He was stoned out of his mind when he hired Rhoads. Not very smart. Rhoads barely even started warming up and Ozzy said he was hired. Ozzy the next day said he had a dream that he hired a guitarist. His mates told him that it wasnt a dream, he was high as a cloud and actually did hire a guitarist. Ozzy wondered if the man he hired was any good. LOL!

Makes me smile seeing Ozzy smile like that :) They had something really amazing going on...so sad Randy died when he was only 25...can't imagine how talented he would be now if he was still alive. Also think that no one could play this song's solo better than he did. His solo had so much soul and intensity in it, whereas the other guitarists tend to make it more about the technical virtuosity and about them instead of the song as a whole.
Makes me smile too. And, yes correct nobody could play it the way he does. Zakk Wylde is amazing, but even he played this solo with super fast tapping, using both hands. The video clearly shows Randy playing it hammering with one hand. Although it looks like his right hand is clinched to focus on his left hand, he is actually muting strings for that super clean sound. Took a classical composer to point that out to me.
@@Mebuckoa lot of the brilliance of Randy is subtle, listening to isolated tracks you hear things that are lost in the song. He is muting the strings as you say, most people pick or play the strings during that part

My first Ozzy album was the Randy Rhoads Tribute. It instilled in me with a love for guitar and set me up for a lifetime of wishing I had learned it.

I saw the very next show they did after this. It was and remains the best concert that I ever seen...and I've seen 'em all.

I was lucky enough to catch Randy on both of the tours he did before passing.
As all of the recordings attest, he was freaking fabulous. I had him right up there with EVH. He and Van Halen ushered in the 80's metal era.
I was bummed when he died. So great, and he hadn't even hit his stride yet. Diary was a rushed album, with little polish on it, and yet his playing is still superb. Imagining what he would've done after that. He may have just ushered in the instrumental stuff, as well, with his not so rock sounding chord choices, odd key choices, and lead work.
Great stage presence as well.
He was far better than we all thought.
And that's saying something, because we all thought he was great.
My friend comes up to me in HS one day and says hey you wanna see Ozzy tonight at the Paladium in NYC with Motorhead? I was 15 and had to convince my parents it was ok to go see a concert in the city during a school night no less! The rest is history and this is from that performance. My kids would never get away with that. I saw Ozzy and Randy 3 or 4 times after that...the good ole days!
Randy uses his fingers in a totally unique “classical” style. Fingers press strings from above allowing clearest sound. I love watching them move. I cant think of anyone else who does that.
He was classically trained,he actually wanted to get his doctorate in guitar, to teach.

When I was 22 years old, Ozzy Osborne was coming to the Sam Houston Coliseum on February 17th (1982). Since first hearing Ozzy’s “Blizzard of Oz” solo album, his new guitar player Randy Rhoads had become my guitar hero. I didn't know much about him, nor did I even know what he looked like, because Ozzy's album pictures really didn't distinguish who was who in the band photo. To this point, I had assumed that the dark-haired guy (Rudy) was the guitar player I had recently come to idolize. Anyway, my girlfriend Mindy and our housemate Chris quickly found a way to score some tickets for the show. I figured if we showed up at the arena early enough, we might get a chance to meet the band before the show.
It was a warm afternoon in Houston when Chris, Mindy and I arrived at the concert hall. We made our way around to the loading dock side of the building to look for tour buses or any other sign of band life. The road crew had already arrived and was setting up the elaborate stage for the “Diary of A Madman” tour. Surprisingly, the atmosphere was very relaxed. We were able to simply walk in and observe at our leisure without anyone hassling us. This went on for the better part of the afternoon.
As we loitered about the premises, I befriended Randy’s guitar tech. He informed me that
the band would be showing up around 5pm to do a soundcheck. In the meantime, he invited me
into a makeshift dressing room to have a look at Randy’s guitars. They were sitting on guitar stands right in front of me. Just feet away from my hands were Randy’s signature cream Les Paul with the snakeskin strap, along with three custom made “V” shaped guitars. His polka-dot V, white pinstripe V and a black one, the latter two sporting the name “Jackson” on the headstocks. At this point, I was not really familiar with his guitars. And this was also long before Jackson Guitars became a household name. Needless to say, I was quite intrigued by them. Luckily, I had the presence of mind to bring a disposable camera with me. I asked the guitar tech if I could take a few pictures of the guitars. He didn’t mind, so I began to snap away. Just as I was photographing the assortment of guitars, a rather large and in charge road manager walked in on me and freaked out. “What the f#$k are you doing in here??? Gimme that efffing camera, those are custom made guitars!” he barked. The guitar tech tried to quell the big fellows concerns, but he would have no part in negotiating any compromise. “Gimme the effing camera if you wanna see the show” he demanded. As a 22 year old punk kid, I was in no position to argue, so I reluctantly gave the Paul Bunion looking troll my stupid camera. The guitar tech apologized for the road managers over-reaction and allowed us all to stay and hang out.
Like clockwork, the tour bus pulled into the loading dock at 5pm. Tommy Aldridge, Rudy
Sarzo and Randy Rhoads soon stepped out. Randy was wearing blue jeans, a black pleather jacket with no shirt under it with a white towel draped around his neck. Absent from the group was Ozzy, who apparently didn’t do soundcheck with the rest of the group. I quickly made my way over to who I thought was Randy and asked for an autograph. Slightly unprepared, I only had a small piece of paper that I had found nearby for them to sign. Rudy signed one side of the paper and Randy Rhoads signed the other side. I managed to make some small talk, at first thinking that Rudy was actually Randy. Up to this point, (As I said, I wasn’t entirely sure what Randy actually looked like). “Man, you’re a great guitar player” I said. Rudy looked at me sort of puzzled and pointed me in the direction of the actual Randy Rhoads. Needless to say, I felt like a douche. Randy was very unassuming, soft-spoken and frankly humble. He happily complied with my autograph request. He had to lean the small piece of paper onto the side of the cinder block wall in order to write his signature. He simply wrote, "Randy Rhoads".
After several minutes, the band disappeared inside the arena and we followed along like lemmings. During their soundcheck, I stood directly in front of Randy Rhoads as the band ran through the song “Mr. Crowley” in its entirety. Randy was playing his cream Les Paul and never sounded better. I was in awe that afternoon, watching this soon to be legend warming up for the impending show right before my eyes. Except for my girlfriend Mindy, Chris and myself, (and a few road-crew guys), there was nobody else in the arena. A few short weeks later, Randy, twenty-five years old, was killed in a plane crash in Leesburg, Florida. I was davestated. His autograph remains framed on my studio wall to this day. Also, a few weeks earlier on March 5th, John Belushi died of a cocaine overdose. You could feel a chill in the psyche of the masses around Houston who had just absorbed the news of both of their untimely deaths. Both tragedies were a stark reminder of my own mortality....Can you imagine what would have been captured on my disposable camera had i been allowed to keep it??? 40 years ago today, 3/19/2022, we lost one of the greatest of all time. Only 2 albums as his main body of work, and people haven't ceased to be inspired by him. He was just 25 years old......

Look at Randy smiling as he slides up the neck.. so nice to see him smile and enjoying playing...why he got on that plane, I suppose only he knows...tragic beyond sad, I would never go in a plane where the pilots doing all these passes and buzzing the bus that was there... For me it would be that feeling u get in ur stomach when ur at a circus or something..that feeling like swinging on a swing at the park..that feeling. I hate it, I know it's a simple no comparison point..but the feeling in ur body when u go down very low and then go back up and keep doing that, it can mess with ur head and in sure all 3 of them were experiencing that feeling... I can only imagine what Randy was thinking when Aycock was doing those dives...it's not a joke and the pilot should of known better, that old Beechcraft was not meant to be a fukin snowbird aircraft... u don't do that stuff when flying. Well u can, but that's really pushing it with that plane that probably didnt fly in years, Randy must of been scared..after 1 or 2 dives...why he got on that plane, only he knows. We know he sure as hell didn't think this was the way he was gonna die. Randy's father left the family when Randy was young I heard that his father had like 3 more sons. I also saw a pic of Randy with his half-brothers I'm pretty sure..imagine Randy Rhoads is my half brother.... Rip randy we love you

@@magicmulder u got it man.....like cliff Burton from Metallica both tragic deaths.,.. cliff killed cause the bus threw him through the window and landed on him and Randy going up in that plane...we can only speculate why he agreed to it....u wouldn't have seen me on that plane...to fly that low that's fast at a descent and is almost suicide to have been doing it.... I cannot see why someone would want to agree to be on a plane and doing that.. that scary feeling of going down quick...seriously it's as if ur on a swing and when u come down for me I always felt like my heart was gonna burst, that free fall feeling ugh.,. why Randy?? A girl on here she channels ppl and she did a Randy Rhoads one I'll get the link it is she said Randy didn't put blame on the pilot..

@Arron P Throgu all my years of research for a project i've been wanting to work on and started, this is what my reason pointed out:
Randy had this fear of flying and on the first flight, Aycock took keyboardist Don Airey and tour manager Jake Duncan with him as passengers. During this first flight, Duncan later revealed that Aycock began "buzzing" the bus in an attempt to wake drummer Tommy Aldridge. The group then landed and a second flight soon took to the air with Rhoads and makeup artist Rachel Youngblood aboard. Though afraid of flying, Rhoads wanted to take some aerial photos of the countryside for his mother. He had tried unsuccessfully to coax bassist Rudy Sarzo to join him on the flight, but Sarzo chose to get some extra sleep instead.
During the second flight, more attempts were made to "buzz" the tour bus. Aycock succeeded in making two close passes, but botched the third attempt. At about 10 am, after being in the air for approximately five minutes, one of the plane's wings clipped the top of the tour bus, breaking the wing into two parts and sending the plane spiraling out of control. The initial impact with the bus caused Rhoads' and Youngblood's heads to crash through the plane's windshield. The plane then severed the top of a pine tree and crashed into the garage of a nearby mansion, bursting into flames. Rhoads (25) was killed instantly, as were Aycock (36) and Youngblood (58). All three bodies were burned beyond recognition, and Rhoads was identified by dental records and personal jewelry. According to Sharon Osbourne, who was asleep in the bus and awoken by the crash, "They were all in bits, it was just body parts everywhere". Though the entire group were quite distraught, the remaining band and crew members were forced to remain in Leesburg for an additional two days, until preliminary investigations were completed. Rhoads' brother-in-law flew from California to Leesburg to identify the guitarist's remains.
@@magicmulder Randy's and SRV's deaths have generated a fear of flying in me. They both are in my top 3 guitarists list.

im always amazed at how casual Randy is....like every finger already knows where its going and he's just along for the ride
