This young man has quickly risen to be possibly the best jazz tenor sax player alive today. He manifest all of the technical facility of the modern greats (Brecker, Potter, etc.). He has a nice, robust tenor sound. He can play with great harmonic complexity. He can rip from the bottom to the top of the horn and back. He can burn at high speeds. But he can also swing, bebop, and play the blues. He can even call on a bit of Lester and Webster. I'm most impressed by his commitment to actually speaking the jazz/swing language and not making every solo some complex, indiscernible mash up of patterns that only a jazz elite can appreciate. Although he can kill you with some pentatonic shifting and inside-out melodic cell lines. Did I mention that he's also effective at teaching these concepts to young improvisers? Amazing.

Brecker took what Coltrane did and continued his legacy, reaching new heights. Chad is in the process of doing the same with Sonny Rollins

Chad, I just wanted to say that, after five years of barely touching my saxophone at all, your videos - and your music in general - have inspired me to get back into playing. I'm rusty as hell, but I'm practicing as much as I can each week. (Much of it spent on your approach note etudes and ii-V-I exercises.) Thanks for all you do. It's helped me return to something that has always given me a lot of joy.

Nice lesson and which demonstrates that a jazz musician can catch and retain the attention of a full audience without playing SO many notes, SO loud, and for SO long. Most horn players in NYC should watch this and try to learn how to develop enough confidence in their actual speech, and in a way that doesn't necessarily require their ego to be the main driving element when it comes to creating the momentum. Go Chad!

that's fun adventurous and dangerous. that's all i want from life. very nice thing to do every now and then, and it was done with a nice continous melodical idea. that been said, i wouldn't have fun following that on C#, I would use a chorus to modulate to D and then have fun with that, because i'm a sneaky not that great of a saxophone player. I have no idea what i'm commenting about.
