When I saw the first trailer for Batman: Arkham Asylum, I didn’t think it would be any special. But when I heard Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their role from my all time favorite Batman animated series, I was hyped. And when I finally got to play it, I couldn’t get enough of it. Now it’s one of my favorite games of all time.
What about God of War (2018)?
Arkham asylum was a master piece especially when you consider most hero games were bad at the time it came out. Great story Great combat and it made you think like what would batman do

I guess this guy is an exclusive DC fan who skipoed out on Marvel games and only played Superman 64, Batman PS2 games, JL: Heroes and MK vs DC.

In my opinion Arkham Asylum had a lot of horror like elements to it, which I really liked
Same, Batman Arkham Asylum was an amazing game that gives us a great Batman game and holds up so well. I own the game for Xbox 360.
The horror made it so fuckin immersive and its comic book atmospheric feel somewhat believable

The asylum felt so real. It was like it was evolving the longer Joker was there. I remember talking to guards in an empty overworld, and then later finding them replaced with jokers snipers and lunatics running around
‘Batman: Arkham Asylum’ is still one of my top 4 most favorite DC games.
Batman Arkham Asylum is Resident Evil 1: Batman, and I am all for it.
Probably the most atmospheric of the Arkham Series, and it benefits that its story can almost perfectly be put in main comics continuity.
Oh, and the fact that it has _the_ definitive voices of Batman, Joker, and (for me, anyway) Harley Quinn.
The rocksteady batman games all have the same exact atmosphere.

@@rpgfanatic9719 The distinction lies in what each game determines “creepy” as. That’s like saying every horror movie has the exact same atmosphere because they’re all about creepy things happening to people.

Many horror movies have creepy elements and some are just shock value gore fests that go over the line of just creepy, so comparing batman with batman is not even close the same fucking ball park as saying all horror movies are alike.

The entire Arkham series was a masterpiece in gaming. I thoroughly enjoyed all three and they are three of the few games that I actually 100% completed.

Final Fantasy NES was supposedly pretty underexpected at the time. It was Square’s last stand then became a legend
If you're still sleeping on Sleeping Dogs you need to get on that. That combat system was so amazing. Definitely a hidden gem.
Both Sleeping Dogs and Alien Isolation really need a sequel but neither seems to be happening.

When Fire Emblem Awakening got released, i didnt expect it has a really great story and some really interested characters like Lucina, Chrom and Robin. Definitely going to play it again because its one of my favorite Fire Emblem game alongside Three Houses/Three Hopes and Genealogy of a Holy War
Great list. I would have added Halo: Combat Evolved. As it brought FPS's popularity to console (Dreamcast/Saturn had with Unreal/Quake too years before). Batman was a HUGE shock when it first showed a trailer for it and what we got. Perfection.
There were people who thought Halo wouldn't be incredible? I bought an Xbox on launch day because my friends and I were convinced it was going to be the best game ever. I thought Batman was genuinely surprising though. I didn't buy it originally because I thought it was going to just be another cash grab.
@@lavenderpants8695 Hmm. Guess it depends how you look at it. I bought the Xbox based on Halo alone; wanted it. But there was a lot of lacking expectation for a FPS on console. Suppose that's why I would say it definitely defied. :) I don't even remember what I was thinking when first saw the Batman Arkham Asylum game shown. Still got it on preorder tho and took a day off from work hah..
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was the first game that came to mind. I thought it would be a stupid game with the Rabbids just bringing Mario and the gang down. Boy, was I wrong! It was so much fun and really funny! Grant Kirkhope’s work with the music really helped the game as well.

God of War especially blew my expectations simply because I personally feel like it did everything so much different from all of the past games, and did it better!
All of these games completely blew my expectations. I know I’m missing some, but these especially were massive to my video game history.
I’m a huge Zelda fan. Huge Final Fantasy fan. Batman Arkham series is the series i have replayed the most. I was a late adopter for the xbox360 (gamecube kid all day) and batman AA was one of the first games i got. It is Die Hard meets Batman, what more could you want? Batman TAS defined my childhood, so to hear Conroy and Hamill reprise their roles in a game was MIND BLOWING. Glad it was number 1 on the list. Absolute game changer
Definitely Kingdom Hearts 1. I remember everyone dismissing it as a kids game, but I loved how dark it was. Riku willingly giving in to darkness, and Kairi losing her heart.

For me I would have included Timesplitters 2. Never played the first one and thought it would be just another FPS. It had no right to be as good as it was🤣
WB game studios is pretty consistent in making great games. The batman games, shadow of war and mordor, lowkey Mad Max is underrated. The fighting system is always similar but to me that adds to it because it's so effective and comfortable to play. I'm really waiting for a Supernatural/Winchester/Men of Letters game even tho I know it'll never happen.

Guitar Hero II is part of what helped me keep my sanity (mostly) in tact while working on my college illustration thesis in 2007. My TV was right next to my work station, and being able to take short breaks every so often to just play two or three songs was a lifesaver. It unfortunately didn't keep me from basically destroying my spine that semester, but at least it wasn't my spine AND my brain.
Any of Bioware's franchise starters in the 2000s could be on this list. KOTOR took a risk by diverting from Star Wars' existing canon, and Mass Effect and especially Dragon Age: Origins looked like generic space/high fantasy games before release
Donkey Kong Country on the SNES is my number 1, not only it defied expectations, but it started a franchise that succeeded on some occasion to be better than Mario.
M+R Kingdom Battle was so freaking good! Can't wait for the sequel in October!

Pretty good list. I'd personally include Borderlands. From what I remember from reading previews of it in game magazines was it was initially a brown muddy looking badlands type game that was a little serious in tone before it adopted it's iconic cel shaded look and dark humor. Although 2 gets the most praise (and rightfully so), that 1st one was something else for me at the time of its release. I spent hours upon hours trying to find better guns, mods, shields, grenade types, etc. And it had 2 player split screen and 2-4 player online coop. Just, it was a fun time, especially playing with family and/or friends.
Wind Waker and the Metroid Prime series were by far my All Time Favorite Games of my Childhood. Can’t count the number of times I replayed them over and over.
Until Dawn is a game that I will never get tired of replaying
I am thinking about all those good times i had playing batman: arkham asylum, my dad and cousin had played it to.The horror, the action, and the gadgets the list goes on.
Jedi: fallen order is another game i greatly enjoyed.
2005's "geist" on the Gamecube. I usually hate shooters, but this one blew me away. It was awesome.

Batman Arkham Asylum was a fantastic Superhero game and one of the greatest after Arkham City and Arkham Knight . You really felt like Batman with his Detective skills and detective vision and doing detective work , gadgets , batmobile and the free flow combat . Rocksteady made the best Superhero games of all time .
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order was an amazing game and Middle Earth Shadow Of Mordor really blew my mind 🙂. The Nemesis system is so cool.

Out of all the RE games, Resident Evil 4 has the best story.
Honorable Mentions:
*Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
-By this point, Capcom was completely off their rocker with the Resident Evil series. Shifting further into action until it became unrecognizable. Just look at RE5 and 6, but the final nail in the coffin was Umbrella Corps, when the series went full Call of Duty. Just when it looked like we about to give up on the franchise for good, in came RE7. At first, it seemed to venture too much into the supernatural, something what was out of place for the series. And the shift to first-person only further had fans worried that it would become another Call Of Duty.
Alas, the game surpassed ALL expectations! It gave the fans what they wanted, for the franchise to go back to survival horror. And the shift in perspective only added to the dread as everyone and everything got way too close to your face.
*Marvel's Spider-Man
-For every Batman Arkham City, there's a Superman 64. And for every Injustice, there's a Batman: The Dark Tomorrow. For a while, Spider-Man 2 was the best Spider-Man game. That is until Insomniac came with this game. But given the last Spider-Man game was The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans were skeptical. But everyone was blown away, it ended up surpassing Spider-Man 2 as the definitive Spider-Man game. Even spawning a sequel with Miles Morales as the protaginist this time, and even a sequel coming in 2023.

The games that they have mentioned before like Fire Emblem only being in Japan, Doom & Wolfenstein I never got to play before until Doom & Wolfenstein came to the Switch. I am glad those 2 games did come over to the system because I am having a blast playing them! Glad Fire Emblem came to the state finally! Since Heroes was on mobile, I played that a lot and now I have The 3 Houses on the Switch and I am enjoying that as well. Had PS2 when I played Kingdom Hearts and I enjoyed playing that game along with the Disney characters you go on adventure with. I know that the recent Resident Evil games are great but the 4th one will always be my favorite. I played it on Gamecube when it came out & I enjoyed playing it a lot. LoZ: Wind Waker was a game I enjoyed playing because it was different with an animated twist which I liked. Twilight Princess will always be my favorite out of all the Zelda series but Wind Waker holds a special meaning to my heart. Mario+Rabbids I had no idea I would like but once I bought it & played it after a while, it grew on my and I enjoy playing it; I liked the battle mechanics & also some of the goofy antics that the Rabbids were doing & playing as some of the Mario characters as well. I can't wait to get hold of the 2nd one to see if it holds up like the 1st one did.
I believe that Nintendo should bring more Zelda games (like Wind Waker and Twilight Princess) to the Switch.
Though I don't know if it'll happen at this point, I'm still waiting on those Switch ports of the HD remasters.
Fnaf 1 should be here because it wasn't expected to do good but here it is today as one of the most popular games of all time

007Goldeneye on N64 isn't only a one of a kind game for NG4 but it's one of the most nostalgic and best fps games ever! Amazing early game in the fps game saga!
Glad to see Fire Emblem: Awakening make this list, as I figured it would. It saved the franchise, welcomed in a host of new fans, told a great story, and laid the ground work for subsequent titles in this series.

Fallout 3 too back in a time where rpg games weren't that famous made the rpg idea to expand, to become so famous that we can't think now that games can't be open world anymore, it was game changing, Bethesda though fell from grace since then sadly, Halo 2 changed the fps genre as we know it, without Halo cod and other fps games wouldn't exist as we know it, Spec ops the Line that mastercrafted game is underrated as hell and it needs more recognition imao

Knowing that Dmc was originally Resident Evil Capcom got 2 for the price of 1 that year I still find unbelievable to this day.

'Mad Max: The Video Game' was something I didn't expect to enjoy. I thought it'd just be a 'Twisted Metal' clone, but was pleasantly surprised that it was much more than that.

mario + rabbids kingdom was funnily enough the first game I played on the switch and I was extremely surprised by how addicting it was that I actually postponed playing BOTW even though I had it already.
Fallen Order I thought wasn't actually that great. It was held in high regard simply for not being a glitchy mess full of lootboxes and MTX.
One of my favorite horror movies monsters is Frankensteen. I also like the music of the German Industrial Metal band Rammsteen. Wolfensteen is good too.

Honestly, I remember for Christmas one year, got a new TV, ps2 and kingdom hearts and Tony hawk pro skater 4.. I was so excited for thps4, then watched my sister play kingdom hearts and then I couldn't wait for her to get off soni could play. So many hours into nearly all the games.
I’m genuinely surprised on how good M+R Kingdom Battle was. I was in the camp of dismissing the first game just because of the Rabbids but now look at me interested in the sequel. XD
It was great that Nintendo and Ubisoft were able to clear out all the negative backlash when Mario + Rabbids was released

My personal choice are the Pac-Man Championship Edition series of games. They are phenomenal. They put a twist on the classic formula that made them super fun. I wasn't expecting much when the first one came out.
Actually, Final Fantasy 1 should be on the list. It was meant to be SquareSoft (Square Enix as we know today) final game before going bankrupt in 1987. And look what we got today.

Guitar hero likely played into the success of the wii as players were more or less interested in simulating their games without the controller. I am surprised no one has implemented the Sims more or less into their Fallout 4 settlement building or Minecraft or No Man's Sky. I think that aspect is missing in these kind of build your own city as the inhabitants are the most interesting aspect and playing God and ruining lives or building people up and leveling them up plays a big roll in really making a settlement your own.
GTA3(not on this list)for me was a huge surprise as it was so difft from gta 1 and 2 and imo it was so revolutionary in a sense.

It wasn’t even a full game, just an add on, yet it became one of the most influential games in the genre
I would have included Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. It has so many things going against it: It had a kind of dumb title (revengeance?), featured a protagonist character that was much maligned in MGS2, had different gameplay elements from the “Solid”titles, and was under a different developer. Yet, it was such a fun game with a killer soundtrack, and it’s such a shame we will probably never see a sequel to it.
I absolutely love the. Story based game like until dawn, beyond two souls, the dark picture series etc.❤❤
