I always thought it was supposed to be Schwarzenegger and Stallone on the cover of Contra....didn't think they were both Arnold
That was a pretty common belief. Mainly because they gave one of them Rambo hair. They are both traced from Predator stills.

Yeah I always assumed it was Commando/Predator with Rambo, was surprised to hear him say they're both Arnold, even when he said it I just stared at the picture like "wut?" 🤣
I still think that the hair and headband was taken from Rambo.
It is but the poses are both Arnie.
As a kid in the 80’s i always wanted a contra movie w arnie and sly playing the two leads and a castlevania one w dolph lundgren playing simon belmont. I dunno, it just felt right at the time, lol
I like your style, and while we'll never know how good those movies would have been (though history tells us they wouldn't have been good at all...), they would still have been very ... interesting.

Hard Corps for Mega Drive is my favourite Contra game, and I didn't play any Contra games until I was a teenager!

That's probably the funniest part of long form videos coming out these days, since most of the recent releases by channels with higher production value like this would have had the footage recorded long before the various quarantines were in effect.

I wish I had all day. Since I work in retail I do still have to go to work. Also, I didn't know there was an arcade version of Jackal. I only knew about the NES version.
Just had my laptop repaired after they lifted some lockdown restrictions.Was not able to play any games during lockdown.
I loved contra for NES, was a child at that time, and while i would always look for this for sale at retailers or maybe even catalogue, *yup* and could never find it, BUT most video stores rented it, and it was always my go to choice,
Its funny to me to not mention how for many, they believe the Konami Code ends with “select, start” because we would always play the first contra with our friends and is one of the best co-op games ever.

@@hdofu Kid can be subjective, as most kids would play probably around 11-17... While being terrified, thats like being a "child" for example below 8 ish, where they scare easily.
I saw the commercial as a kid and was terrified and excited for the contra sequel
So they changed the name in countries that had nothing to do with the Iran-Contra affair but still released it under that name in the country that did. Because that makes sense.

Jackal was hands-down my favorite game as a child. Super challenging with weapon upgrades, interesting game mechanics and weird scenery. Not to mention some whacky bosses.

Hard Corps Uprising is honestly my favorite game of the series. Super underrated game.

Its cool that you covered everything on the franchise, though you definitely missed the fact that both Contra and Super Contra on the Arcades had a *Continue limit* (Even if you did put many credits, both games will not let you continue further than 5 times)...so yeah, its actually tougher than you'd think, even though they are shorter than the NES ports.

I always knew Contra was something of a unicorn of the NES, but I didn't realize how rare of a unicorn it was until now.

Shattered Soldier is awesome. It's definitely a "real" Contra imo. In the vein of Contra Hard Corps with the pace, challenge and boss insanity Treasure factor ratcheted up to 11. Fitting since Treasure came from Konami.
How did you feel about Hard Corps Uprising?
@@XeviousvSBlackmanta it was cool, the animation is great and I like 2.5D, reminded me of PS1 Strider, but I wasn't very good at it and I prefer the speedy movement of Shatter Soldier. It's backwards compatible on the Xbox One, I should replay it.

43:05 the biggest difference with Shattered Soldier is the weapons system being locked to Machine Gun, Flamethrower, Grenades only. Not sure why you didn’t mention this but it works because of the puzzle elements. Each boss has a weakness to a weapon, sometimes more than one. I loved this game and it needs a re-release. But, Konami is too busy Konami’ing. I did grab new contra mobile bc I’m a sucker. Great vid.

I loved the video and agree with your opinions 100% . Thank you for taking the time to make this . I DO hope for a really good Contra game in the future , but I am not holding my breath . The most fun I had with the seri6is with the original entry with my older brother on my NES back in the 80's when we played for hours , took an hour or so break , and booted it up again .
Bought the first one when it came out and have been a fan for the last couple decades. Love the deep dive and was a pleasant surprise to hear Whang doing some of the narration. Love his stuff too.

Fantastic video. There's about three times as many Contra games than I thought.
I look forward to your complete history on the Rocket Knight series. That series is to me what Streets of Rage is to you. It's a game I'm surprised hasn't had an indie spiritual successor yet like The Messenger did with Ninja Gaiden or Stardew Valley did with Harvest Moon.

And what an amazing production! Lots of great,. thoroughly researched information. You definitely do some of the best game content around. But this series deserves the respect you gave it, and I really appreciated how you started as far back as you did, even mentioning Ikari Warriors and its contemporaries as inspiration for Contra.
As for the original game and Super Contra, it will always be the NES versions for me! I was always baffled at Konami's choice to use a vertical orientation in the arcade versions. And the only games in the series are Contra, Super C, Contra Hard Corps, Contra 4, and Hard Corps Uprising! I never could stand the boring, vertical levels in Contra III so that's the only 2D one in the series that I can't stand...
Sorry it took me so long to comment on this. I'm such a big Contra fan I wanted to set some time away to watch this in all its glory on my TV. AMAZING VIDEO!!! great work. I noticed some familiar friend's voices in this video. The only voice I didn't hear was Media Glitch's so sad lol.

I adored Contra and can still finish it with 1 credit, loved Super Contra too (You didn't mention you can double the guns power by picking them up twice in Super Contra) but I didn't play any of the other games. Did have GryZor on my Amstrad CPC too.

I had the gameboy version and loved it. I hadn't played any of the others. I remember at the time thinking "This is a bit like Midnight Resistance".

I missed this when it came out. I’ve only played the first contra, but was always curious in the franchise. This video definitely has me respecting the franchises legacy more now and I’ll be checking out some of these games.

Even if it is has not the Contra brand, I think you missed to talk about "Blazing Chrome" which is the most faithful game to the series in the few last years. Just to finish on a good vibe at the end of your video, not with a salty taste due to the Contra: Rogue Corps review. Besides that, great video and a lot of good memories!
