Pouring Concrete Floors In Freezing Temperatures (My Advice)

In this video I'm talking about how to pour concrete floors in freezing cold temperatures. I have to pour concrete in below freezing temperatures from November to March here in Maine.
I've been pouring floors for 40 years in freezing temperatures with a lot of success and some failures. Most of the failures are from the floor not being protected afterwards with blankets and the concrete floor froze then the top scaled off.
But most of the concrete floors we've done in the winter are like the one in the video, where we pour right outside with the temperature in the teens or twenty's. Then wait around for the concrete to set up so we can finish it. Then cover it with insulating blankets.
The mix I like to use is a 4000 psi with water reducer, 140 degree hot water, bag flake calcium accelerator and straight cement. No fly ash or slag in the mix.

When trying to bullfloat some hot mud, we always found it helpful to add a little weight to the bullfloat. We either put a cpl bricks on the float or a cpl trowel fulls of mud so it presses harder on the surface.

Used to be a crane operator in northern NJ working on high rise concrete buildings. Once did 86 days straight not counting weekends in the dead of winter in the late 1970’s. Pour averaged between 250 - 300 yards. It was done with top notch tradesmen who had pride in their work. Draped floor with heaters below the pour provided all the heat needed to keep concrete from freezing before it set.

Mike you impress me as the kind of guy I would like to sit and chat with over a really good cup of coffee or two. I like your manner and the way you come across in the videos. I bet Luke and Darrin love working with you. A man that works as hard right in there with the guys like you do after 40 years really inspires me. Thank you for all your information, teaching and great attitude America needs good solid working folks like you and your crew.

The issues we had were after done finishing and blankets on it if you get rain or snow within the next week. If you get that and temps get cold the top .25 inch will absorb the water, freeze, and pop the top. Usually with cold temps it takes the week to get 3k psi which keeps that from happening. Had a few floors we had to fix because of this problem. We stopped doing flatwork 2 years ago, now all we do is walls. Great job.

We are pouring just the walls at our camp in western Maine and then plan to cap it until March when the builder is available. I'm told it's okay to do in mid-November, but it's really causing me to lose sleep at night. This video was a huge help for me to better understand this. Thanks so much!

You’d love to see the East Indians where I live in Canada pour concrete in winter lol. -20oC and they form up concrete basements and pour like any regular day and walk away after the pour lol. Those basements get houses built on them right away and buried fast before anyone sees them starting to crack. They have zero concrete knowledge but get tons of work because they are cheapest and disappear quick before anyone catches on the concrete froze before it properly set. I’ve seen in several times near my neighborhood in new subdivisions. So it’s interesting to see how you guys deal with cooler temps. We have to add heaters and hoarding to keep concrete warm if it must be poured in winter up here (to do it properly). But heating a construction site gets very expensive very fast so it’s normally only commercial industrial jobs only.

Great video mike. We do the same stuff down here in Kentucky. One problem I do have is getting straight sack in winter and air entrainment. This happens in some of the rural areas mainly. They also claim fiber mesh is not standard. Can you buy type 3 up in Maine? I cant find it anywhere down here. Anyone else have that problem?

We just had our new garage floor poured at around 22F here in Norway. Now, the guy I used said he could not do any buffing that day as it got even colder later on - now 5 days later it still not buffed in any way. They are waiting for warmer weather - is that a common thing to do?
