    I was running this saw for about 2 hours at about a 30-50% duty cycle th-cam.com/users/postUgkxfQm1wmg0ItKDLavxj1nXtQY9HP7EF504 and it did a great job. I used the lever for the built in sharpener to clear chip buildup out more than to actually sharpen the chain. It managed to cut some hardwood stumps much larger than it's size without bothering the neighbors with hours of 2 stroke noise.

      How can people cut down a tree without any authorisation. There should be committee meetings and a democratic vote as to kill or not kill, especially as it’s maybe over 100 years of age, it’s unlicensed euthanasia. Trees are a living thing.

    • @philipnorthfield
      @philipnorthfield 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      In the UK there's a piece of legislation called a TPO tree preservation order for specific individuals or groups of trees, without permission from the local authorit, essentially unless the tree is diseased or dying or dangerous it can't be cut down poisoned root cut or damaged by the owner or anyone else and a qualified arborist is required to carry out pruning maintenance etc.

      @@danceswithcoyotes8273 It does seem like a sensible regulation that if an old or rare or specimen tree or group of trees can be protected particularly at this time although there's always pressure to remove the legislation or circumvent it, currently it is still enforced by law hopefully this will continue. I am sorry you lost your beautiful maple. I know it's not the same but possibly you could plant some more of unusual varieties and care for them to hand on to future generations if you have youth on your side you may see some become beautiful specimens in their own right.

      In the Forest service they servey trees and help identify dead dying or infected trees. They will cut these trees down to allow for new growth and also allow these older growth to still be able to live without a danger of being fallen on or killed by the infection as well. You sometimes have to cut down tree to save trees.

      At some point they all die. A lot of times old growth like that will start showing disease in the upper branches first. It's best to cut it down then, while the wood is still useable, rather than wait until it's dead or dying and has passed on the disease to who knows how many other trees.
      In my experience that's the majority of the reason old growth is harvested.
      I like them too, but I'd rather see it used than wasted.

    Retired forester here. From the video, it looks like the first tree is a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) and the second, a white ash (Fraxinus americana). Douglas-fir is a western species found in the Rockies and from N California to the Pacific NW into S British Columbia. White ash is an eastern tree found extensively throughout the Midwest and eastern US. From National Wildlife Fund:
    "The population of these trees is stable. Many people are familiar with Douglas firs because they are one of several species used as Christmas trees. Aside from their use as holiday decorations, Douglas firs are one of the most valuable timber resources in the country. They’re used for furniture, poles, fences, and flooring, among other things. Although they are harvested extensively for timber, Douglas firs are widespread and aren’t in danger of extinction."
    If you've never seen a big tree felled before, it can be a shocking experience. This Douglas-fir looks about 5 ft in diameter, big, but not that unusual. There are still plenty of Douglas-firs this size. Why did they cut down such a magnificent tree, you may wonder. Is this legal? Why don't they cut some other trees down, or just use dead trees? Some of the negative comments directed to the sawyer are over the top. Perhaps I can shed some light.
    You may be surprised to learn that old trees eventually reach a point where they are a net CO2 emitter, not absorber. This is because trees respirate, similar to animals, whenever they can't do photosynthesis, as at night or when dormant during the winter. They respirate by burning the sugars they made during photosynthesis, releasing CO2 into the atmosphere. As they age, trees increase the time spent in respiration vs. photosynthesis.
    The point at which an old tree changes from being an oxygen-releasing, CO2 absorber to an oxygen-using, CO2 emitter varies with species, age, size, and other factors. So, if a tree lives long enough, the net effect is that it uses oxygen and gives off CO2, just like people and animals. Trees are said to be "biologically overmature" at this point.
    Trees produce many benefits, but if you want to reduce atmospheric CO2, then young, vigorously-growing trees will help more than mature ones, and overmature trees will actually add CO2. I can't be sure if this Douglas-fir is overmature, or if it has defects like a damaged top, since the video doesn't show that, but these could be factors.
    Douglas-fir is a heavy seed producer, so it's likely that new trees will quickly sprout up from the seed already in the ground to fill the new hole in the canopy which allows sunlight to reach the forest floor. Re-planting is probably not needed here - nature will take care of that. Douglas-fir reaches pole-size in 30-40 years and several feet in diameter in 70-80 years.
    I think it's a bit hypocritical to criticize from ignorance, when most of us live in homes built from wood such as Douglas-fir and many of us buy this same species as Christmas trees every year, then toss them to the curb on Jan. 1 to go into a landfill or burn them. The 1,000's of board feet of lumber than this one tree provided probably made some fine furniture, cabinets, or flooring, plus tons of carbon will be locked up in the wood for as long as the product is used, possibly 100's of years.
    Everyone uses forest products whether they realize it or not. Just look around your home. They're probably in every room. Yes, they really do grow on trees! Now imagine going to the bathroom without forest products!

      @davidmorgan5557 ปีที่แล้ว

      I understand the sentiment of not killing trees. I have some beech that are in the 2-300 year range. They are beautiful and I will never cut them down. But as a forest management practice this is just plain wrong. Trees, just like animals have a limited life and sometimes man can help nature out by culling trees that are nearing the end of their life. That dark middle part of the tree are called xylem and in the spring it carries nutrients to the flowers and leaves to get the annual growth cycle underway. Problem is just like people those arteries clog up with gum and that portion of the tree dies from the inside. Perfectly normal even in a perfectly healthy tree. But eventually a tree with xylem that have clogged will die and become dangerous if in a populated area. There are things we Can do to help keep trees around longer. 1) stop buying things from china and other countries that don't properly treat their packaging for pests. EAB is killing all my ash trees. 2) stop burning coal in power plants. Trees need a lot of calcium and acid rain is washing it from the soil. 3) demand wooden products that are made from multiple species. Different species have different life spans and using a broader spectrum of tree species helps to ensure a biodiverse forest that is less desirable for clearcutting and is self-sustainable. Mono species forests are much more susceptible to drought, infestations and blight.

Some 4/5 foot maples and oaks that were nearly that big. Most had grown up in the open, so they had huge canopies. I thought it was such a shame to cut all those beautiful trees.
      Until i saw what was inside them. They all had a significant amount of rot inside them. Better to cut them down than wait for them to fall.

      @@_MjG_ Nah, look up redwoods and sequoias. Some are even much much older than 500. These are 2 of the largest and prettiest trees on earth. Weve already decimated their populations. There is absolutely no reason we cannot use other wood, or at the VERY least, younger trees that we can actually replenish. We can not replace a 500+ year old tree without waiting 500+ years. Its that simple. If we cut them down faster than we replace them, then we will lose them all together. It literally doesn't even matter how special or useful the wood is if its all gone. It needs to be replaced faster than its cut down or these giant trees will disappear from this world. That's a simple fact.

      Just because there are trees that are older of the same species, doesn't mean this tree is. There are 150 year old redwood forests &these species can grow up to 150 feet tall in just 50 years. I don't know the age of this tree, but neither do you & you can't just assume it's a 500 year old tree. TH-cam has many fake vids & vids that aren't what their clickbait titles suggest they are. The thumbnail was clickbait/fake, so that's brings suspicion to whether the title was as well.

      I'm a greenie mate trees can have green leaves and be dead . Moisture in a trunk plus sections of sucrose in pockets of pulp can prolong the appearance of a living tree but truly tree feling of this size mostly involves an arborists prognosis about best cutting methods. This looks legit about a year removal for forest health not environmental vandalism. Trees struck by lightning shatter upper structure of the tree and snap half down trunks that get eaten or infested by termites , while we still use timber this is the better option. I was hurt by such logging untill I researched best practices.
