The Cowboy Tomi boot sticker looks awesome! I really appreciate your videos, especially the way you edit them to show exactly the parts that people need to see. Some bike TH-camrs skip what they think is boring so they miss showing essential tasks and some people make hour long videos explaining literally everything. You get it just right, I think. You've inspired me to try my own frame painting projects and restomods. Thanks a lot, Cowboy!
A spray bottle with alcohol will make it easier to saturate the inside of the grip before mounting it. A little more time sanding/finishing would have helped. Even spraypaint needs a lot of time to cure. It's hard to have that kind of patience though in between coats and the final clearcoat. Microshift drivetrains are such a blessing for converting these old bikes.
Thanks for the tip! Yes, waiting for the paint to cure is the worst while all the parts are waiting to be installed! I have to work on being more patient during these moments. Microshift is truly a blessing.
They do! The Konas are cool, too. I've already been bitten by the bug, I'm rebuilding a second GT so I have something to ride when I rebuild my first. Is it going to stop there? who knows!
@@racketman2u I just rebuilt a giant next on the list is an old '88 trek 900 I'm going to have to stretch the dropouts for anything above a 6-speed and a Schwinn Badlands I didn't have the heart to tear apart for parts. So Satisfying making them run good. I went so far as to volunteer at the local bike co op if I do anything I'm going to learn to lace up my own wheels!
Dude so glad I found your channel! You’re doing all the mods that I’m planning. Add eyelets and mount points brazing, converting an old mtb to rigid, and your bag video is great! Really enjoying the content and very much appreciate to quality of your work!
Great choice with the microShift. I have the AdvenrX 1x10 on my Gary Fisher Joshua, Trek 4500 and Specialized Crosstrail gravel conversion. They work great. To stop the bottom bracket socket jumping out of the threads when the bb is stuck I put a bolt through the socket and into the bb thread on the square taper - it holds them tight enough that the socket won’t pop out but you can still turn the bb. That was a lot of rust in there!
I have a Trek Mountain Track 850 the similar color. Probably around the same age as yours. Someday I’d like to restore it too. You have given me the inspiration.
Hi Tomi. Another great video, I look forward to your future builds. I'm currently building a touring bike and take a lot of tips from your videos. Look forward to the next one. Peace Simon (Wales - UK)
My way: Rusty bolts and other hardware get soaked all night in liquid rust remover like Evap-o-Rust. Then washed in soapy water and when dry are dropped in a Harbor Freight vibratory cleaner with walnut shells and polishing compound. They come out looking brand new, and I had little to no hand work to get them looking great again. The vibratory cleaner will also make aluminum parts look super, especially if they are left in all night. I also use a cloth wheel on an electric motor with white compound for the bigger aluminum pieces like the crank arms. Mirror finish is possible with just 30 minutes work. Also, rather than deal with stencils, I have custom decals made very reasonably by a local decal shop. Right now a Jamis Coda Comp is getting the spa treatment. Thanks for the video, and is that Rustoleum Hunter Green paint?
@@CowboyTomi Yes Rustoleum is great paint for the money. I just painted a fiberglass canoe with Rustoleum Oil Base Enamel and used a catalyst hardener. It came out nice.
As a lifetime lover of GT bikes, this is awesome! The only thing missing is the same gold treatment for some “GT” down tube decals. I guess maybe you we’re going for something a little more stealth.
Hi Tomi, this has quickly become my favourite channel on YT!! Love the words of wisdom through the videos too :) Just a quick question, did you use the original rear wheel? I’m starting a project too but not sure that I’ll be able to fit a 9 speed cassette on the original hub. Heard about some people needing to redish the wheel and enlarge the dropouts, was this the case for this build? Thanks for the videos, keep on making the best vids on TH-cam! Peace
Thank you so much! Great question, I did replace the wheel with a new wheel that came with a 9 Speed Hub. The spacing was still correct on the spacing between the dropouts (135mm), so I didn't need to do any rigging.
I love old GT's. I wish I had more than just 2. 99 black Zaskar and a really old 91 maybe Karakoram with rear DX U-brake, purple swirl with matching GT butt stem.
Oh man!! Not sure but at 3:12 it looks like you hit your knuckles sooooo hard on the pedal when that crank bolt finally let go😬 I really hope your knuckles have made a full recovery😊👍
That’s pretty freaking awesome. Thanks for creating! This makes me want to invest some serious money into some more park tools so I can do something similar with my 2008 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo. Big thumbs up and a subscribe.
hi, friend!! I have the same bike with SHIMANO ACERA FH-M290 7-speed wheels, do you think I can install 9 speeds with those same hubs? Thank you very much I love your build bikes!!!👍
Another great looking bike. Exact color/sticker theme I am looking for on my trek redo. Have the same microshift setup on my poseidon, and it's amazing. Shame you couldn't leave that beaver sports sticker. Too funny.
Hello, what a good video, is it possible for you to sell the parts that were replaced? I'm trying to get those kind of parts for my bike it's a trek from the 90's.
Exactly what I needed. Just one question Tomi, if I try to remove the bottom bracket and it's really stuck, is there any chance to damage the threads of the frame? I don't have a torch :)
Heat is one way, soaking the entire thing in oil (car oil, wd40 anything really), impact wrench. There are many options. None should damage your threads however
Awesome Tomi! I have a 90's GT Tandera which I want to convert from a 3x7 to a 1x8/9.. do you know if I need to change the wheel itself when I update the back cassette? Or will a new cassette slip right onto the old wheel? Thanks!
Yes, what komoonkh said. I would search online for a used/new wheel already built with a 9speed hub, its usually cheaper than getting a wheel built with a new hub.
Nice job! If this was supposed to be a bike packing build, why not build 2 or 3x drive train. My gt timberline is a 3x9. 11-36, 24,32,44. I have all the range in the world.
something about seeing old bikes get brought back to life is so soothing
It truly is a good feeling and soothing to do.

I did a full resto on this same Gt mountain bike years ago . I even replaced the rock shocks . There’s a ton of life left in these old bikes .

Can you make videos of how to cut and crop own stickers and your setup also? Pleaeee!
I will consider! I've been busy juggling my job and the channel so we'll see!
Your channel is so informative. I have a question. Can I add a 9 speed cassette to a 1988 26” 6-8 speed hub?
Thank you! I'm glad. You would need a 8, 9, 10 speed hub for it to work.
