Dream Bike Build Restoration - Blacked-out 1x10 '94 GT Ricochet

- I love how this bike turned out. I love the blacked out paint and the polished fork. In the disassembly of the bike I wanted to try and restore the Judy XC fork but it was too far gone (I spent a few days trying to restore it without success). That said, I am totally stoked on how well the Answer Manitou EFC fork turned out after rebuilding and polishing it. I was surprised how light of a fork it is and how well, after 24 years it is still working well. Also, it was fun to put a 1x10 drivetrain on this bike using a used XT shadow plus rear derailleur.

I realize this is an older video but felt compelled to comment. I have always had a special place in my heart for the triple triangle frames from GT. You did this one right. Beautiful build.
Me too. Love the frames. Aesthetically very pleasing to my eye. I've had two vintage Outpost Trails, and gave both of them to my children. I almost regret doing that, as I don' t have an example for myself. Yet!
1 🔺️ X 3 🔺️'s = Triple 🔺️
The one and only

Best restoration video I've seen. No unecessary VO or music, great camera/edit/colour timing. No hip attitude, you're schooling people.Good on you.
26" wheels with v brakes. I loved no music or talking until the end. Cool video and still a nice bike 👌
20 inch wheels with no brakes is more preferred for me at least and a bmx frame, handlebars, fork, hub, sprocket and uhhh ye a bmx is better
Good V brakes with high quality brake pads will take you down some pretty gnarly trails all day!
@@rayfxv2353 hahaha ur getting wet when someone talks about a BMX 😅😝
I'm a v brake lover, but when it's raining ufff...
Man, you are not a bikes builder, you are an artist. Beautiful jobs, I enjoy your videos so much.
I enjoy the pure sounds of a craftsman at work.
No commentary. No music. Just the sounds of movement with the correct tools used under the correct pressure.
Art
Great build. I have seen your other builds, but this one is special to me. My first mountain bike in college was a 1988 GT Tequesta. It is unfortunately a 1 inch head tube so upgrading is not very easy these days. I still have it and went through it top to bottom, repacking bearings and the like. In fact, watching your videos has gotten me back into working on bikes. I forgot just how much fun and therapeutic it can be. And when you are done, you have great finished product that will continue to offer good service for another 30 years if parts hold out. I like your premise and what you do for your local community. Thanks for the journey and I wish you well.
That is incredibly Zen. And thank you for not ruining it with shit music, because the sounds were quite hypnotic. I loved it.
"Shit music" is relative to the listener... depending on personal taste. Some people may find the exaggerated sounds to be "shit" as well. 😅
16 minutes of my life well spent!
Beautiful craftsmanship. Watched this with the volume off before bed. Like mediation for me. Put me in a good frame of mind. Very satisfying seeing the finish product. Many thanks.
The triple triangle...
Unmistakable
Purposeful
Beautiful
I was really hoping the purple would reappear.
Same here. That purple was legit
Yeah me too. I have a candy apple red one and I still love it :)
Agreed. That purple looked real nice
But gadamn that became a sexy bike
Yeah purple would've been cool but black suits this bike quite good
Great work. Good insight after my
retirement .
Never thought I'd see they days of bike ASMR
Pretty much all restoration project videos are ASMR these days 😶

As a fellow bike rider/mechanic/ restorer this was an amazing hypnotizing video. Very inspired to do another restoration myself!
This build reminds me of how I look when I haven't shaved, start getting all old and gray looking and then I shave and it takes 10 years off of me. You gave this bike a nice clean shave.
Lol 😂 thanks, all the stubble is now cleaned up.
10 years???? This took 20 off of it!!
I have this same bike. Really gives me inspiration.
I love GT's...
I got my frame sanded, sprayed it with salt water to get it rusted overnight and painted it with 4 layers of matte clearcoat and copperflakes.
Built it up with the whole xtr 900 and it brought me 4000 miles through 11 countries.
Still runs great!
Beautiful build! 👍🏻
Awesome
Do you have pics of the rusted bike clear coated?
Solid work done here. No need for pretentious high end anything here, just straight forward, readily available and easy accessible tools and parts. Awesome!
The fork etching was an incredible idea and looks amazing.
Thanks
how did you do that effect on the fork print?

I have to say you did an absolute beautiful job. I’ve seen a few restorations on YT & I must say this may be the one that breaks the leg on the couch that gets my lazy rear-end up in order to proceed with a great project for myself.
Wow!!! I’ve been hanging on to my Raleigh M-400 I bought when I was 17 and I think this vid has just helped me figure out how to breath some new life into it! Great video!!!
This reminded me of a GT Avalanche that I once owned, that was painted black. Being a bike messenger, it was my work horse and weekender/race bike. It seen multiple drivetrains, V-brakes/disc brakes and cockpits. I ended up turning it into a single speed, with some very nice parts on it before it got stolen. It was one of my favourite bikes. Thank you for sharing this beautiful GT that brought back memories of my old GT.
The editing on this video is sublime. Beautiful work from start to finish.
Thanks 🙏
Oldie but a goodie. Rewatched this and still one of my favorite of tour builds.
This is the most soothing & satisfying video I've ever seen
Thanks 🙏
One of the coolest looking frames ever. Detail on the fork is fantastic.
This was amazing to watch. Love the fact there's no music- the part when you slid the forks back together was priceless....phwooooph. One day I'd love to try something like this!
ertainly make me think i can do it;...lol
Bike asrm or whatever it’s called
I'm so glad I found this channel. Ive been into restoring and rebuilding used and older bikes for years.
Awesome
Amazing when you bring old bikes to life. I love it!
Thanks
This might be the best looking bike I've ever seen!
This restoration is so detailed and thoughtful. You are so creative with your skills. Keep up the amazing work 🚲
Thanks 🙏
Fantastic!! I love seeing neglected bikes brought back from the dead instead of buying new. I bet it's very rewarding!! Definitely fun to watch!!!
I love the combo of new and old. Imagine how that old Manitou rides compared to a new fork 😂. I don’t miss those early suspension forks.
I can easily admit I know next to nothing about bikes yet this video was incredibly satisfying to watch. It looks like a great bike.
Awesome
Amazing build. Love the futuristic take on old frames
Thanks 🙏
@@oldshovel is the graphics on the fork from a lower grit sandblast? And do you have a recommendation for a cheap vinyl cutter?
I ran the blaster at a lower pressure. As to the cutter I use a Cricut Maker and it works great.
No talking, pure art.
I really enjoyed the video. I was going to go on about the voice over but after reading the comments I think it was a good choice. Keep doing what you love and allowing us to see the projects. Thanks.
Lol 😂 I am glad a lot of folks like the music and voiceover. On this one every time I reviewed the clips I just loved the sounds and though, I’ll just do ASMR on this one. Thanks for watching and your support.
Had that model in ‘95, got stolen and never saw it again. Cracking bike. Your build is great.
Love it all except for the ass hatchet. The paint and graphics, especially on the fork, are outstanding. Thanks so much for sharing.
Lol 😂 they’re not bad after build up a callus. Thanks for your support.
I didn't feel old until I saw this bike with it's aheadset needing to be restored. That was futuristic tech for most of my younger riding days.
Great Restoration❗I love what you did with the decals and paint.
Thanks 🙏
Yeah the forks look great sandblasted/etched too!
@@oldshovel can you explain how you do the decals?
Your a real pro! Best restauration video I've ever seen. I'm overwhelmed...
Well done as usual! Awesome looking bike! I do miss your thoughts and commentary along the way!
Lol on the commentary, I was working on it but as I was reviewing my clips I loved the sounds the clips had so much I decided to let them be the focus to try something different so I let the sounds of the restoration be the soundtrack and the voice over.
Oh wowo . Such an inspiration. Thank you for your work. Old is forever new.
I look forward to every one of these bike restoration videos. Nice job, I love GT bikes.
Awesome thanks
It is so satisfying to see you take a bicycle that most would have thrown in the trash and make it better than new again!
Thanks
That's an ass-blaster saddle if I've ever seen one, everything else looks great though!
Lol 😂 this is actually the second one like this I’ve used. I rode two seasons on one just like it and it worked well for me but it’s not for everyone and not for rides over a couple hours 😁.
Oddly enough... this saddle felt as if it was molded from my asian posterior and was really comfy... into it splintered into my taint... damn chinese carbon! Figuring I would learn from the first time... had the seat warrantied and got a hold of a second one... to my dismay ended poking my flesh balloon the 2nd time around! Moral of the story: if you want holes in your offsprings... by all means, $25 carbon from Ebay is the way to go!
@@oldshovel I've been using two of them as well, for me with cycling shorts they are fine.
I think they are like bmx seats, for display only.

Minus the commercials this is bike ASMR. Great channel.
That's a great restoration. U really did a thorough job! Congrats on a nicely finished project. Enjoy!
Thanks 🙏
Around the same year my parents bought me my first Gary Fisher- HooKooEKoo. Thanks for bringing back memories.
Great build. That's coming from a GT nut--I own 22 GT bikes. I've done four custom paint/rebuilds. Love your content!
pastagreyhound agreed !
Thank you both
Watching these videos makes me wanna refurbish a bike so bad. So cool.
This is so satisfying to watch. I’ve been looking for a good modernisation of a 26” wheel bike for a while now and this is so good. I really want to try and build a 26” wheel single speed at some point, if I find the right bike.
any ideas on where to get good 26" tires? they seem to be really hard to find
@@unclefreddieDied I just got Continental Race King 26 x2.2 for the front and 26 x2.0 for the back.
@@woffordwolf2071 from where?
@@unclefreddieDied online, I'm pretty sure you can get them at the store too?! 26 is still popular for dirt bikes they also still make bikes with 26 wheels, just the regular mtbs now have 27'5 and 29.
@@unclefreddieDied the Panaracer Fire-XC tyres are pretty cool if you want something a bit weird
Oh my lord. This build is out of control beautiful.
As someone who started mountain biking in the 90's, I have to say it made me shudder when I saw those elastomers come sliding out of that fork.
That was a dark time in suspension history.
Lol 😂 they’re not too bad. I was surprised just how good shape these ones were in. You should have seen the ones that came out of the Judy I took off. They were totally destroyed.
It's probably just jaded memories of my rockjumper turning into a ridge bike whenever the temperature dropped.
Lol 😂 me too.
@@planz9242 I get them 3d printed from a mate using modern flexible filament ,they work flawlessly
@@oldshovel you may be able to find an old rocksox mag 21 on ebay , those were great air oil forks.
i got a gt outpost a few days ago . its a tall frame with front suspension. I'm currently repairing and changing some parts . i love seeing your restoration process. it really helps .
Impressive job. Long live to the 26" frames!
Wow the work quality , a lot of love if he’s paying so much attention to details , awesome restoration
Inspired by your creations, I restored my old gt bike too.
Love the subtle "oldshovel" marking in the frame and the small amount of red component detail and the full carbon saddle! All very stealth and cool looking! A joy to watch as usual.
Where did you get the GT decals? I have a ‘90s GT road bike frame, and would like to get some new decals for it.
Скорее всего они сделаны на заказ.
Maybe a bit late and probably you figured it out yourself, but he always makes them himself with a plotter - I guess his one is called CriCut.
Ebay.
Amazon
So much relaxing to watch after a long night ride.
Finally, another bike vid! : )
Thanks
Omg omg omg you do no disaapoint. Your videos are awesome. So therapeutic too. This gt style frame went onto inspire so many other gt frames which where great
To all cursing the saddle - it's more comfy than you can even imagine! Just takes a little while to get used to it. Circa 110 grams is nothing even though in this case it doesn't really matter. And it looks sharp and sexy as hell - a real cherry on the cake! Great job overall!
Amen my brother. The nesayers just don’t know.
Craftsmanship at its finest! I was so proud of my bright red GT All Terra Outpost Trail that is virtually original and meticulously maintained. Until I saw this😂.
Creative and classy My good man. Well done!
How do you find the decals when restoring a 90s era bike? Ive been having some difficulty in doing so.
I can’t help you but if you’re a bit into graphic design with a program with adobe illustrator and a foil cutter like in printshop you can get it done by yourself
I LOVE what you did with the forks here.. the silver on silver paintwork is really cool.
Le quedo espectacular. Muy hermoza. Hasta me motivo a restaurar las mías. Geacias
giving life to something old and forgotten is priceless...nice work!
Thanks
Dude you live my Dream haha. I've got a lot of retro mountain bikes that I'd love to restore like this but I never have time nor money to buy all the tools are parts needed. Other than that I am a new subscriber and wow am I hooked!! Keep up the good bike building content my friend!
Thanks 🙏
@@oldshovel Amazing result! I've just been gifted a GT Avalanche that I believe to be a 1997. I'll basically be doing what you've just done, entirely inspired by this video including the murdered out theme. Your parts list should work for me too, correct? Bottom bracket in particular?
Best part... NO WORDS while building! Thanks bro, dope build!
I really lile the old GT frame its look so special 4 me
This is actual bike ASMR. Good job man!
this was amazing. Loved the purple tho
It's really satisfying to rebuild and upgrade an old bike.
Loved this whole vid, but just one look at that saddle made my ass hurt forever
Yeh that saddle gives one the chills,
Like sitting on a ice skate upside down.
Wow! Do this to my GT please! You are an artist!
V brakes cool, but I would have used some sick canti's
Sweet build tho
Hard to find modern MTB brake levers with a short pull for cantis but I agree
It's fun working on bikes. Especially restoration work. Nice job
I didn’t realise they did an aluminium ricochet, my 93 is steel
I love steel bikes. Thanks for watching.
I believe the Ricochet was a steel frame until ‘94. It went to aluminum starting in ‘95. The ‘94 model was first year with threadless stem and last year with steel frame. I own two ‘94 models.
Picking up a vintage GT Bravado tomorrow. This video got me pumped!
sweet! Panaracer dart on front
Their contis mate. U must be blind
Did you mean the panaracer inner tubes? You have it right, considering Oldshovel himself liked your reaction. Nuttin wrong with ur eyes. Vintage rules btw
@@D.O.T.U.K I think he's talking about the old tire that was on the bike prior to the rebuild. Tread pattern looks a lot like a Dart to me.
I remember test riding a GT Avalanche in '94, it was all polished aluminum and looked great!
I'd like to ride that bike with a comfy saddle
Lol 😂
Thank you for the motivation to execute a proper resto of my first real bike age 15, my 1992 GT Karakoram. Over the years it's been terribly painted, steel fork replaced with mag 21 rock shox after truck accident, that was much later replaced with proper length rigid carbon, and turned into a townie. Big challenge will be getting the original bottom bracket out....yikes. Not a fan of the U brake but it sure adds character 😁. Thank you again!
Those bottom brackets can be scary
@@oldshovel Yes I barely remember attempting it once and stripping the teeth. One person ages ago recommended soaking it in kerosene. I think it'll be a wall hanger if it doesn't come out (unless I was to throw down $$ with a bike frame builder to cut it and weld in new tube.)
@@oldshovel I got it out!! Pedro's BB socket with pedro's socket holder II, over which I put a deep well 24mm impact socket and 1/2" breaker bar, and my foot. It was scary seeing frame flex but it came out, and left all the aluminum threads in the frame. The plastic cup needed a gentle application of a sawzall bimetal blade by hand, and prying out the pieces once the cuts were made. Strip and paint time!!
The original purple was cool. Should’ve kept it shining
I liked the purple too but man it was beat up like crazy. If I was going for a rad bike build it may have worked.
oldshovel yea, I hear ya....maybe I was thinking you’d leave some of the original paint through while you added the graphics. Either way, great job!
Awesome job! I like that you kept a lot of original parts 👍
It's building a new bike using an old frame, rather than a restoration
Impressed you did all that work in 16 minutes😁
Lol 😂 if only 😁
oldshovel just messing! Wonderful/gorgeous bike man👍👍
I would suggest investing on a torque wrench, it makes a satisfying click
I am so at peace when watching your videos.
Bikeporn
😁
A friend of mine had this exact bike when they first came out, he loved that bike. Nice restoration.
Watching you rebuild bikes in silence is like watching an ASMR video. Relaxing and a elicits a sense of joy.
A warm greeting from the heart. Professionalism in the sense of the word. Your follower from Algeria
Beautiful bike. Classic and dark black. Great work.
That was awesome to watch. A WTB black saddle with white lettering would look sick. I have Wake bars on all my bikes now, they are a great deal
The original Bike is an outstanding classic and i think that you did a lovely transformation into today. I would also like to see you restore a bike and its original components. Shimano XT 900, STS, etc etc, Its a lot of fun and the old components are outstanding in handling and durability.
I would love to see more builds like this, more upgrade style builds, pinting bikes and upgrading parts
