How about Rosemary Clooney's dress in WHITE CHRISTMAS when she sand "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me?" And, of course, Monroe's "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" gown?
I LOVE the neckline of that dress Clooney wears, and how dramatic the shape is!!! I think that dress is part of why for years I wanted to marry wearing a mermaid dress.
The designers are absolutely amazing. The way the outfits look so authentic for whatever the fashion at the time was. My favourite was Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra outfit. The work that went into that.
I'm surprised no one here has mentioned the Schiaparelli-inspired fuscia gown Marilyn M wore in Gentleman prefer blondes. It's been referenced hundreds of times in pop culture; even James Franco wore a version of it at the Ocscars. On a side note : in the early 1990's at Bloomingdales in Manhattan - there was a Hollywood themed exhibit of original gowns. I was blown away by the tiger striped gown Marilyn wore in the Rachmaninoff sequence. in person on a mannequin - and on film it was jaw dropping.
Love the list. I also love the black and white dress Audrey Hepburn wears in Sabrina. And I understand why the green dress was chosen, but Scarlett's red dress... Wow!
Adrian doesn't get enough recognition that he deserves. Having study the 1930s era of fashion he was an amazing designer. In my opinion Edith Head took to much credit for what Hubert did in Breakfast at Tiffanys. Audrey loved Hubert and his designs. Funny Face showcased Givanchy talent. My favorite dress from that movie was the pink and white gown Hepburn worn.

Great video - and it convinced me to subscribe. One small caveat - Cecil Beaton only designed the costumes for the stage version of MFL - the sets were by the great Oliver Smith. Many of Beaton's set designs for the movie echoed Smith's.

I saw a stage production of My Fair Lady where the hats were so large that the actresses could only stand arms length from each other...
Was it the one designed by Cecil Beaton?
@@Costume_CO I don't know. It was in Seattle early 1990s
Designed by Givenchy, the dress Hepburn wore during the opening credits is not the little black dress. The little black dress is the one she wore when she went to see Sally Tomato at Sing Sing.
Thank you! This also corrects the mistaken statement that Holly wore the same dress throughout the movie.
Great costumes - I was just waiting to see if Rose’s boarding outfit had made it onto this list. I have to say that scene is such a good character reveal!
I would have added Hedy Lamarr's Peacock costume from Samson & Delilah
This is the first video I watch from this chanel and I’m loving every minute of it!
Thank you so much Perla!
Well done. I am an old man and enjoyed this video. More for the history or it than understanding what a "bodes" is.
Thanks for your comment G! What's do you mean by a "bodes"?
@@Costume_CO
He means a bodice.
A bodice is just the top portion of a dress!
I loved Audrey Hepburn's costumes in the movie, "Funny Face," a movie in which she plays a fashion model. They're gorgeous.
Yes indeed, Hepburn made every outfit look like a dream.
I think most, if not all, are still wearable today - sign of truly timeless design.
CLEOPATRA'S costumes are like nothing seen in ancient Rome or Egypt. More like Las Vegas.
I just subscribed. That was a lovely and very well researched video. I will gladly watch a second part.
Thanks Yolanda, I'll have another one coming up in the near future.
Costume CO Thank you for answering me. I had seen your videos some time back but then I lost the history and forgot to subscribe. TH-cam suggested you again. It’s great to see passionate and knowledgeable people talk about the costume designs and the creative process. Much love from Greece.
Yay TH-cam! Haha, well, I've always wanted to go to Greece. It's my most favourite historical era. :)
You should do an episode on Ginger Rogers' dresses from the RKO pictures with Astaire.
I did not know Debbie Reynolds had such a great collection
Chandra Housley she wanted to open a museum for movie costumes in la but it never was to be
Alternate title for this video: “Top Ten costumes from Debbie Reynolds personal collection”
😂 That wasn't intentional!
Costume CO lol! Great video btw! Love all of the background on these iconic pieces of history!
Jonathan L Debbie Reynolds definitely was a smart woman to save so much Hollywood film history.
@@jonathanl9229 Thank you so much!
Man I gotta watch some of these movies again!!! Great video ... and very well researched 💕
Thank you Carolyn jo!
How about Rosemary Clooney's dress in WHITE CHRISTMAS when she sand "Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me?" And, of course, Monroe's "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" gown?
Julian Child. OMG, yes! Loved that dress! And the blue dress she wore for Sister's number.
Awfully. Tacky, Garish -- but right for the period of that story.
I LOVE the neckline of that dress Clooney wears, and how dramatic the shape is!!! I think that dress is part of why for years I wanted to marry wearing a mermaid dress.
Was just thinking about that gorgeous black velvet with the rhinestone brooch on the back. Classic Edith Head.
Marilyn Monroe in that pink dress, singing “ Diamonds Are A Girl Best Friend “ love that gown.
Yes, indeed. Very iconic.
Wonderful video as always 😊 I'd love a full video on Titanic's costumes if that's something you'd be interested in doing 😊
Be awesome..loved Kate Winslett's hat.
That would be Awesome
Scarlett must have had some wonderful maids/seamstresses to transform curtains into that dress!
Rose's Sinking Dress was just as iconic.
As was Eliza's Ball Gown,
And Scarlett's Twelve Oaks Barbeque and Red Party Dresses.
The designers are absolutely amazing. The way the outfits look so authentic for whatever the fashion at the time was. My favourite was Elizabeth Taylor's Cleopatra outfit. The work that went into that.
@ruthjames715 Thanks so much for commenting Ruth!
What a treat that video was!
Thanks Prof Cecily!
A real voice! Brava!
Thanks Cynthia!
I’ve just found your channel , fabulous !!!! You now have a new subscriber 🤗
Thanks so much Julie!
Costume CO welcome 😘
I'm surprised no one here has mentioned the Schiaparelli-inspired fuscia gown Marilyn M wore in Gentleman prefer blondes. It's been referenced hundreds of times in pop culture; even James Franco wore a version of it at the Ocscars. On a side note : in the early 1990's at Bloomingdales in Manhattan - there was a Hollywood themed exhibit of original gowns. I was blown away by the tiger striped gown Marilyn wore in the Rachmaninoff sequence. in person on a mannequin - and on film it was jaw dropping.
I had it on my short list. 😁
Love the list. I also love the black and white dress Audrey Hepburn wears in Sabrina. And I understand why the green dress was chosen, but Scarlett's red dress... Wow!
Thanks Katie!
I saw the costumes from ‘Titanic’ at Biltmore several years ago. It was spectacular and in such a beautiful setting.
The Titanic was not a "travel cruiser," it was an ocean liner.
Royal Mail Steamer
Very few people remember that most of the money to make that ship came from a mail carrying contract and when it went down it was the single greatest loss of mail at one time in history. I donot know if it is still the largest loss of mail at one time.
Except, if the academy award had been available Gone with the Wind would’ve won it
That's probably true!
LOVE the my fair lady dress.
Can’t wait to find out what the ‘Bad Sandy’ costume fetches for Olivia’s charity
Me too! You can order the auction book from Julien's.
In case you haven't find out: pants - $162,500.00 and jacket: $243,200.00 - as per this video: Doris goes to Julien's Auction: Marilyn Monroe, Mae West, Erte, Olivia Newton John Iconic Costumes
Wow, how have I just discovered this. What an amazing channel.
Thank you so much! And I love your name. 😁
Costume CO that’s so kind. My name is Bobbi and I have a deep love for vintage and antique buttons, hence the name 😘
Oh , Marilyn , how gorgeous you were . That dress ! So classy compared to some of the over exposure today , sexy not smutty . 💝
Yes, Christine Thornhill, and she was natural looking-not boney...a size 14 actually. So beautiful!
Taming of the Shrew is one of our favorites. I’ll have to look if you have a video on it!
Your channel is awesome and informative. I hope you get more subs! Just subbed right now!
Thank you so much. 😁 What a lovely thing to say.
Okay, Totally new level of respect for Dorothy's dress having pockets! It's a shame that so many craftsmen were denied recognition because the category didn't work. Oh my gods, I can't even imagine having to wear something like that in the final Grease scene. That sounds like torture. Also, I can only imagine the horror of some research projects for these. Thank you for giving us the history behind these icons!
recently (dec. 2019) the person who bought Sandy's black leather jacket gave it back to Olivia Newton-John.
Oh really? That's lovely, thanks for sharing.
@@Costume_CO indeed, it is quite fresh news; l guess you can check the details better on this recent headline available on internet. :)
Amazing! Thanks for sharing the info.
@@Costume_CO There is a TH-cam video with information about the ON-J and other stars action. The title is: Doris goes to Julien's Auction: Marilyn Monroe, Mae West, Erte, Olivia Newton John Iconic Costumes
Thanks for sharing Peter. :)
Years ago in NY, one of the museums had a costume exhibition, and I was blown away by the wedding dress in Camelot worn by Vanessa Redgrave. It was made up of hand sewn pumpkin seeds, which I had never noticed while watching the film. AMAZING in person.
I would have loved to have seen here the stunning green gown worn by Kim Novac in Vertigo, when first seen in Ernie's by James Stewart.
And my third pick would be (again, emerald green) the gown worn by Keira Knightley at the library & dinner scene in Atonement.
Thanks for a delightful clip!
Thanks so much for commenting Crystal!
yes, the costumes from the film 'camelot' are perfection...they were designed by john trusscot. all of the clothes were hanging on racks at warner bros. costume rentals, back in the days when they were available to all....the wedding dress is beyond belief.
I saw the green velvet curtain dress at the Ransom Center. Don’t forget that gilded chicken feet were included in her headpiece to accompany the rooster feathers. That Scarlet used everything to make her big impression!
How about costumes from Doctor Zhivago in the beginning after movie Geraldine Chaplin with a beautiful pink costume coat and matching furry hat and Julie Christie costume also
I love that costume!
I enjoyed this video! Beautiful costumes I have loves since I was a young teen.
Thanks Catherine.
I found the video very educating and interesting. Thanks for sharing and teaching me something new. I love all these movies and I am a big fan of costumes.
Thank you so much Elisabeth. 😁
Great video - and it convinced me to subscribe. One small caveat - Cecil Beaton only designed the costumes for the stage version of MFL - the sets were by the great Oliver Smith. Many of Beaton's set designs for the movie echoed Smith's.
Thanks willym, my bad. Someone else corrected me about that.
How about a video about famous jewelry and/or accessories from movies? There is a fantastic article on the Joseff of Hollywood collection of movie costume jewelry on Collectors Weekly that could be quite inspiring.
👗my favorite dress of all time would be the black & white dress grace kelly wore in rear window. 👗
There was.one that.ginger.rogers wore I loved...i got to.see it in real.life..omg the rhinestones...and a victorian one hand embroidered with peacock feathers sewn in that was the most beautiful thing i have ever seen but it went for.sale and into a private collection before i could even get a picture...it.was u believable.
@@sislertxYes, it's absolutely gorgeous. Then again, anything would look wonderful on her. She was Edith Head's favorite 😊
