The usage of color in these costumes is magnificent. The yellow symbolizing warmth, safety, and happiness. The blue symbolizing secrecy, isolation, and cold. And the red symbolizing the gruesome violence and tragedy. The way she captured the silhouette so accurately yet using modern elements is so tasteful. Absolutely love these costumes.
It reads as authentic because of the accuracy in the silhouettes. Almost all period movies slightly modernize this but silhouette more than anything else defines a decade's fashion. I LOVE these costumes.
It's really impressive, especially thinking that at the first few scenes, Edith was always wearing shades of Yellow and it sort of implies that she's supposed to be the ray of sun that will change Thomas, and she did.
I read and watched every single piece of OFFICIAL information I found about Crimson Peak, your video was absolutely delightful and everything is exactly right except for this single fact, very nice work
The costumes in this movie are absolutely wonderful. I have no words for most of them because of how beautiful they are. Even if they're not historically accurate in every way, they're perfect.
If I were to make a… lukewarm defence of it in the case of Lucille, from what I understand chemise’s are usually made of very thin, delicate fabrics and depending on the quality could possibly be expensive. Seeing as most of the Sharpe’s clothes are 20+ years old it’s possible that her chemise became too worn or damaged to wear and they didn’t have the money to replace them, I also think it’s implied that Lucille’s dresses used to be her mothers (as she would’ve been a little girl during the 1880’s) but wearing her mothers chemise would be akin to wearing her underwear, so not the same as wearing hand-me-down outerwear.
This video is really like all my dreams come true. I have adored Crimson Peak for a long time bc of its incredible costume work, its Gothic plot, and the amazing look of the house. I can't thank you enough.
@@Costume_CO thank you so much for replying! Especially on a video that isn't new. You did such an amazing job. I love how information-rich your videos are. I can tell you do a ton of research and I adore it.
Holy hell how have I not seen this video. This was one of my favourite movies of that year. And one of my favourite things about it was the costumes. Lucille's black dress, I became obsessed with it. You legit read my mind when talking about this movie, it felt like a Gothic opera or a Shakespearean tragedy. When watching the movie I picked up on the opposites between Edith and Lucille. Edith wore light colours with colourful flowers. It made her glow with life. But Lucille on the other hand wore dark colours, her style was beautiful but very macabre, she was dark, decay and blood. Both represented their nature very well in their costumes
I'm a very big fan of Crimson Peak for its costumes and its sets so I can't believe I haven't seen this video until now! Your breakdown has been a joy to watch. The details you pointed out, such as the pleating style, are things that went over my head (being someone not involved in costuming or fashion). So fun!

Please please please do Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette”!!! Everyone I’ve talked to always says that it’s one of the best examples of film costuming and I’m so curious as to what makes them work

22:30. Edith's gown is also reminiscent of the nude female form. The gown is a pale champagne or Ivory satin, suggesting skin. thank you for making these videos! the more I watch the more I am fascinated with this avenue of art. I am curious as to your thoughts on costumes of modern (but still excellent and thought provoking) period films? I am referring to films that do not have as elaborate costumes as for example GOT or Crimson Peak. How do brilliant costume designers still tell story and design with purpose in a film set in today's world, with today's clothing?
Hi Stephany, thank you so much for your lovely comment. Interesting that you should ask about modern costume design. I just watched and awesome interview with Ann Crabtree, the designer of The Handmaid's Tale and Westworld. She talks in great detail about the challenges of costuming a contemporary piece. What she says is that it is just as challenging, but unfortunately it doesn't get the recognition it deserves in the same way that historical films do. I personally love contemporary works and I have reviewed a few so far. Unfortunately, I only have so much time to so a video that I often got to the most celebrated, but I hope in the future to tackle these more modern pieces too.
This is an absolutely amazing analysis and look into the creation of the costumes, it really gave me a clear understanding of the creative journey that led to the beautiful film.
If I can make a slight piece of constructive criticism on the production side of the video, which overall is fantastic and please know that it’s something small, but the music choice on the background kind of took me out of what you were talking about. I understand the choice of it though! It’s very fitting to the film you are talking about and the aesthetic of it, but there were moments when the piano and violin suggested an ominous sound when you were talking about the techniques, like when talking about the pleating in Edith’s shirt. Please feel free to ignore this but I just wanted to share something that I felt took me out of the wonderful analysis you were sharing.
Hi Jennifer, thank you for your kind words and your feedback. This video is now four years old (it's hard to believe!) so I have tried to improve as a creator along the way including my production techniques. One challenge at the beginning was finding free music that worked with my videos. I am now using a service with a much better selection and we have also found a level (I hope) that doesn't distract from the voice over. Thank you again for taking the time to comment. It's very much appreciated. 😊

Hi Jennefer not a problem at all. I often don't respond on such old videos but your comment was so thoughtful that I wanted to let you know. Have an awesome day.
Well, such a detailed analysis, I had to pause to catch up. Love all the close ups of techniques. Be fun to know more about the artisans who did the work. Thanks. I'm subscribed and this is saved in my research file.
Can you analyze the costumes of Gone With the Wind? There are so many great costumes on just Scarlett O'Hara alone. Oh and also the costumes of Singin' in the Rain. It'd be great if you analyzed costumes from old movies and TV shows too.
Oh oh! And also the costumes from the recent Man from UNCLE movie (about the 1960s)!! And The Good Guys movie (1970s). You know, something more contemporary, but not too contemporary.
Edith’s wardrobe as exquisite as it is, confuse me, I realize from your video that the puff sleeves were meant to invoke a butterfly however in 1901, the leg of mutton sleeve or puff sleeve was almost completely out of fashion. It confuses me a bit as Edith was modern and wealthy, she would have had the latest fashions. Am I wrong?
Sorry to bother you but do you know anything about the, "tree bark pleat" you mention in this video? I have looked around for a while and can't seem to find any tutorials or guides on this technique. you mention it around 9:40 talking about the train on Lucille's drop of blood dress.
Robert Furlong Hey Robert, yes, it is a fancy pleat done at the pleaters. I'm actually doing more about commercial pleating in my upcoming video, but in the meantime I will add a link for you in the description.
Costume Cinematografico AAAAHHH! THANK YOU SO MUCH! If you're busy and it is in an upcoming video I can wait. thank you for all of your work and dedication.
NP, it's already there. :) The company is UK based but you can check and see if your local pleater offers the same service. I wouldn't try hand pleating taffeta, but if you want to try it on a natural fabric, you can also try the broomstick pleating.
my absolute favourite costume design ever! I want to wear every single one (or at least create something similar), especially Edith's. 'Gothic' fashion is usually more like what Lucille wears & while it's gorgeous I 100% prefer Edith's look - it's so feminine and elegant in an otherwordly way
The costumes stole a lot of my attention, however I do wonder why the heroine must wear such transparent thing fabric to walk around the house, I felt she would have at least try to wrap herself in a shawl?
Hi! Could you rewiew Colleen Atwoods Snow White and the Huntsman movie costumes? They are more fantasy like but still holds medieval garment history in them. Would be interesting as Im doing some of these costumes :)
I think it's likely a silk organza because it is stiff. If you want to recreate it, a synthetic organza will likely work very well and hold the pleat permanently.
@@Costume_CO thank you so much! I'm looking to make a custom doll of edith and that was one of the dresses that I'm going to make for her. again, thank you!

Hi Nelli, Thank you for your lovely comments and great suggestions. I actually am working on Daenerys right now! I will add you suggestions to my watch list. Can you tell me what movie is Marie Antoinette? Is it the Sophia Coppola one?

Ediths sleeves drove me crazy. It threw me out of the story so bad because they would have been quite out of fashion by 1901. In the mid to late 1890's we had a sleeve shift back to a slim silhouettes and not these giant monstrosities we see in the movie. It threw me so bad because in that scene we see her with her giant golden pillows on her arm and then she walks by a model T Ford which didn't come out until 1908 so I was like, wait when did this take place? I just don't get why movie makers do this. How hard is it to check if something existed in the year your movie is set. And again why did they choose the giant sleeves for Edith? She young and wealthy and so most likely would not have been wearing such a dated sleeve choice. It's like wearing giant flaired, bell bottom jeans from 2001 in 2012. You just didn't do it. Why not just shift the timeline back like a decade if you wanted the giant sleeves. Ugh, I'm such a stickler, this is why I can't watch period movies. LOL
I didn’t really enjoy the story, I found it a bit bland and silly at points but visually it was absolutely stunning. The costumes and sets were so gorgeous especially when they took a turn for the romantic gothic, just beautifully done.
ive seen every single movie before and spooiler alert the titanic sinks and the beach is actually an island where they grow weed and wow covid has been in australia for the past three years according to the news everyone has it and we cant get rid of it even tho we all had our shots for it over and over again
It was a crime she did not win an Oscar for costume design!!!

SO TRUE
Sadly, she wasn't even nominated.
I'm not sure why, it might have been because she was still up and coming.

My soul hurts at the lack of chemise worn under the corsets (no wonder they hurt) but besides that, I adore this film's costumes.
Seems to be a trend in Movies and TV shows.
@@Costume_CO Yeah. Guess it's hard to be "sexy" in full foundation layers (even if they can be stunningly gorgeous)

Hi Dante, I love Collen Atwood. I'll see what I can do.
So you need 3 extra meters of fabric... THIS sentence!
You will have to refresh my memory on that one. :)
Amazing analysis, thank you so much!!
My pleasure, I'm glad that you enjoyed it.
What a Beautiful video!!!! Thank you
Thank you so much!
Her dad is bobby from supernatural
Hey Jackie, yes that's Jim Beaver. I'm a huge fan of Supernatural!
Most Women in ca. 1901 would've worn the S bend or "Health Corset" to achieve the classic "Gibson Girl" silhouette of the turn of the Century!
Hi Brandy, it's a bit of an earlier period. It's set in 1887 New York to start.
Gothic art at its peak
Yes, it's fantastic.
When is an 1890s sleeve not too big? Its great when it's bigger and bigger
Unfortunately, the Mother Ghost dress was left out of this video.
Hi Jill, I only did the 3 main characters.
what fabric do you think that ediths nightgown is made of?
I think it's likely a silk organza because it is stiff. If you want to recreate it, a synthetic organza will likely work very well and hold the pleat permanently.
I'm assuming you mean the white one?
@@Costume_CO thank you so much! I'm looking to make a custom doll of edith and that was one of the dresses that I'm going to make for her. again, thank you!
My pleasure. 😁
This was a great movie but absolutely fucked up I felt bad for everyone in that situation
Do you mean for the characters? Yes, very sad for everyone.
@@Costume_CO Yeah the characters it was a really complex situation with a lot of depth
Any chance you'll cover video games? I would love to see an analysis of Deus Ex: Human Revolution!
@Costume CO
Hi Joshua, Thanks for commenting. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about video games!
I LOVE these videos! I am a fanatic fan of historical/history influenced fashion, and your videos about costumes are just superb! If it's not too rude, I would like to suggest some movies/ series to review:
Daenerys from GoT,
Memoirs of a Geisha,
Marie Antoinette,
The Musketeers (the BBC series)
Sweeney Todd,
Sleepy Hollow (1999 version)
Hi Nelli,
Thank you for your lovely comments and great suggestions. I actually am working on Daenerys right now! I will add you suggestions to my watch list. Can you tell me what movie is Marie Antoinette? Is it the Sophia Coppola one?
Hooray, can't wait for the Dany video! She has the best costumes of all GoT characters in my opinion :)
And yes, it's the Sophia Coppola movie.
Thank you for replying so quickly :)
Might I also suggest "Gladiator" and "Quills?"
Those are both awesome movies. If I recall, the costumes in Quills were really great :)
How do you spell Pasmentourie? Pasmentory? I can't find that word anywhere.
Hi Lissy, it's like this: Passementerie
@@Costume_CO Thank you!
Was a great video with stunning costumes....but what about ediths hat she wore as a young girl to the funeral. I thought it was stunning!
Sorry, I don't recall that but it was a few years ago that I made the video. Thank you for commenting. :)

I'll add it to my list!

Kate Middelton would be so proud 😂
I kinda want to wear them but without the corset
LOL
👍
the background music gets a bit unnerving. whats that screeching
Hi there, it's likely too loud. Video is from 4 years ago. I hope you find our more recent music more pleasing. 😊
I personally like it, adds to the tone of the movie she's desribing.
I love del Toro but I really didn't like this movie ,, fabulous sets and costumes ,,
I didn’t really enjoy the story, I found it a bit bland and silly at points but visually it was absolutely stunning. The costumes and sets were so gorgeous especially when they took a turn for the romantic gothic, just beautifully done.
Thank you for commenting octagon.
