    Surprised you didn't go with a canister damascus with all the cold shuts between the screws. The steel powder would have filled the gaps and given you an interesting acid etch. But cutting out the delaminating sections was a good call and the end result looks great. Great handle work

      This guy definately has some decades of crafting with his hands. So I actually appreciate how he "simplify" the way he works. I'm sure it didn't happened day to day. And on this place I of course don't encourage anyone to follow the example. As You said after short welding intro, you should use any safety measures possible. And I myself follow this mantra. Unless I have 20+ craft daily experience I don't skip any safety measures.

    When I think of Damascus, I always yearn for the acid etching to see the striations of the metal. Here, a fine knife was produced, but it lacked the luster of the acid etching to mark it as Damascus. Even some mustard etching might have given it more flair to enhance the tones of the handle. Either way, it's a nice knife.

    • @derekshreffler593
      @derekshreffler593 ปีที่แล้ว

      Technically that would be pattern welded steel not Damascus, I know it’s a colloquial name for pattern, welded steel but historically Damascus steel was a type of wootz steel or crucible steel from the Damascus region of the Middle East.

    • @jjlongiii
      @jjlongiii ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. Damascus is all about the pattern in the steel. There is no pattern evident. Just forge welded billet. Not teardrop, ladder, etc. Didn't forge weld the shape, more of using cutting to shape. Nice end result, but not up to Forged In Fire standards.

    • @derekshreffler593
      @derekshreffler593 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jjlongiii well he didn’t etch it in ferric chloride or muriatic acid that’s why there’s no pattern, beautiful piece regardless. Also I would have gone with an iron and high carbon steel billet rather than using lag bolts for this.

    @Everyone asking about "why he didn't etch", should understand that this type of damascus wasn't meant to be "patterned damascus", which uses (generally) 2 different types of steel, and causes there to be a contrast of color, revealing a pattern (the softer metal gets darker)...In this case, the term "Damascus" simply means the forge-welding of a bunch of smaller pieces into a billet, which is then cut (or folded), stacked and forge-welded again (several times), to ultimately end up with a solid billet, blended together and large enough, to craft the knife from... It's all made from the same exact material, and therefore, would all turn the same color if etched... Think of it like taking a bunch of small bits of clay and mashing them together until it becomes a ball of clay.... if you cut it in half, you would not be able to discern the smaller bits that went into forming the big piece... It's all the same material.... The goal was to turn all those screws into a "solid" chunk of steel, large enough to craft a knife from it... and he did that in fantastic fashion.

    • @wayneceallaigh8027
      @wayneceallaigh8027 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was always of the opinion that modern Damascus was made from different metals stacked into a billet and forge welded together, from which multiple techniques could produce multiple patterns. I guess if the screws had powdered steel and was put into a can, different metal striations would be seen. I still wonder though if etching would have revealed something. The grain of the metal was prominent even after the mirror polish, which leads me to think that something might show.

    • @jeremyjames1659
      @jeremyjames1659 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not Damascus. Damascus is either rolled, folded, or welded together after its cut into sections. This was just forge welding together a bunch of screws into a solid bar.
