B58 is all about two words. Closed decklid. The N54 and 55 were making like 700whp on stock internals with a big single turbo and E85. Beyond that the block started being an issue with it's open decklid design. That'll no longer be an issue with the closed decklid, so once the aftermarket gets to work on these, oof. The B58 will become the closest thing to a modern 2J really.

Can confirm the auto highbeam works amazing. Use it on my 235 whenever I'm night driving in the countryside. Also the rear sparkplug is pretty easy, that plastic cowl comes off with 5 bolts.
This is one of the few times Mr. Regular has nothing bad to say about the car. In fact, it sounds like he really likes it! Kinda makes me want one

I drove one of these before and all of a sudden my 335i feels like an aircraft carrier compared to this.

I was gonna trade my 335i in for a newer 240i but I backed out later on since mines a paid off vehicle and it’s been a reliable car so it would make more sense financially to keep it. I would like an M2 but where I live, I need a second vehicle in the winter otherwise it’ll just get bogged down.

I own an M240i non xdrive. It's a blast to drive. It doesn't have all the fancy soft closing doors, power trunk, head up display like my BMW 550i but in return it's super light and tossable; a true driver's car.
0:19 the Supra isn't as pigfat as they say when it's parked next to a modern "small" car.
Judged against its contemporaries it is rather fat. Yeah cars today tend to be very heavy but the last gen Supra was heavy for an effective 2 seater with no cargo space.
I have a 2020 b58 m240i and so far it’s been amazing ! Just regular maintenance. B58 can take a beating

The cowl over the engine is just a plastic cover. Same on my E90. Changing the plugs and coils took me an hour, and 3 tools.

I've seen multiple sources saying Yamaha were commissioned to design the engines and others saying that Yamaha only did a few bits and I don't care enough to do any more research. I definitely shouldn't have said "build" in my original post though. At most they designed them.
2ZZ was partially Yamaha-designed, but the 3SGE and 4AGE were entirely Toyota.

I had one of their steering wheels back in the PS1 days, tried using it for Gran Turismo and Ridge Racer and such, turns out it wasn't even analogue, for the first 60 degrees of turning the wheel either way there was no control input sent to the console whatsoever, after those 60 degrees it sent 100% full lock steering input, it was the stupidest fucking thing ever.

But the truth about modern BMWs, any one of them is this - put aside $2-3.5k year beyond the maintenance and tire replacement if you own after it's warranty expires. They're not engineered to withstand normal use without large sums of money to keep them running.

You make me feel like I made a mistake buying an e36 M3 as a daily in Erie, PA recently. And I did it because the newer bmw product I owned R56 Mini, scared me on the cost of maintenance front.

I just hope the supra makes 600WHP without internal engine mods, just exhaust, a third turbo identical to the 2 stock ones, intake (to adapt the third turbo) , intercooler and ecu tune. If that happens, people will stop complaining and just enjoy it.
The other thing I wander, is how light could it get with extreme weight reduction, delete everything superfluous, replace panels with fiberglass, etc... Would 1.5KG per HP be wishful thinking? Well, its a waiting game now.

14.1 Liters, NOPE. The "Commodore" (G8 and SS were 2 different generations of that Holden import) is a heavier RWD platform than the Alpha (same as 6G Camaro ) used, besides having 2 different origins, one in Oz [Zeta], the other Stateside [Alpha].
I know Camaros have been built in both Zeta (5G) and Alpha (6G).... (maybe that's the confusion)

14.1 Liters, the soon-to-depart ('18 for sedan, '19 for coupe) Cadillac ATS is made in the same RWD Alpha platform family as the G6 Camaro, which is why there are complaints about lacking rear seat room (ATS is just slightly longer than the G6 Camaro) and the ATS-V engine is a 2T-3.6L V6 (shared w/the CT6 V-sport) rather than the V8's used on Camaros and on the former CTS-V.
The CT6 is made on the larger RWD Omega platform on which it was to spawn a CT8 flagship that now it's not going to be built. The rumored XT6 crossover is most likely from the FWD (C2XX) Epsilon-based "Chi LWB" platform as the new Chevy Traverse fullsized crossover, but with higher output engines and mandatory AWD (still slightly smaller than a regular Escalade).

It took me a couple weeks cause who reads the manual. But! you can turn the sign reading off, or at least turn the “warning, you’re speeding off”. It gets distracting having it flash red on the front window.

What "really grinds my gears" is that BMW still makes engines with the timing chain in the back of the engine.. And if it needs replacing, the engine has to come out.. Madness!!

This 240i does around 360 hp from a inline 6.
It's not under the body. It's under the cabin filter. Anyways, 320hp stock. Single turbo inline 6, direct injection, dual valve timing/lift, this thing can easily push out 800 with the correct mods.
@@2jsanc681 Actually even better than that for the m240. It's pushed to "330" hp stock. But I've had mine on a mustang dyno and they actually make around 350-360hp stock. BMW underrates them :)
VANOS is going to be the death of the B58 since it's an engine out job. Valvetronic however is basically ITBs on any BMW engine but easier to package and actually cheaper!

Well it is a MHEV. A mild hybrid electric vehicle. So technically a hybrid to a certain degree. But not a regular hybrid.
It's clearly not your fault that a BMW (!!!) as a performance model can't be told apart from a lame hybrid. Oh the times we live in...
As an owner of this particular model, I can assure you that it definitely does not feel like a hybrid. The efficiency/eco mode is just to make you feel like you're not gas guzzling. I get 24 mpg average.

The Supra isn't supposed to have smooth power delivery. it's supposed to make you feel like you've engaged warp 5. Also, BMW engines aren't modable. This is the exact wrong engine for this.
This guy gets it. A supra is supposed to be the anti-bmw.
I'm pretty sure when the mk4 Supra came out it was a comfortable Grand tourer that was pretty sporty. Go back and look at the best motoring races that came out when the Supra was new. Also Toyota engineers from the 90s would probably wet their pants to get an engine with such a wide power curve as the B58. Pretty sure the high rpm rush would be considered to be a technical deficiency these days. Also if you don't think BMW engines are moddable you haven't seen the thousads of videos of of 335is putting down 600-800 hp. Lastly I'm pretty sure a stock Supra has a pretty smooth power delivery.
modern bmw engines are moddable. I have a JCW Mini with the B48 2.0T BMW engine which gained 70bhp off a simple tune. These engines can easily see over 350bhp with radiator and intercooler work. Time will tell if they’ll be a loved engine that people will spend time R&D’ing to push even more power out of.
@@lucazade6787 Right, but fixing it will be a pain, it will be expensive, and still boring. Supras were making 900 and 1000HP back in the late 90's after mods. I don't know. was a mechanic for a few years when I went to school and I've never seen a durable german engine.
jumbowana fair comment but saying there’s no reliable German engines is maybe too far. PD VAG engines, E36 straight 6 (minus cooling system) old merc diesels? (Mechanic myself)
