Love your channel and discussions of these comics. Videos are really well made too! This is my favourite Batman story. It’s so dark and brooding and the art is just nuuuuts. Thanks for the deep dive.
I like to think of Arkham Asylum as Grant's Alan Moore phase, where he was heavily influenced by him, but he wanted to be original enough to where people wouldn't dismiss him as an Alan Moore rip off, though some people do now even though, quite hilariously, Grant and Alan hate each other. I can say this was before he embraced being comics' Philip K. Dick. I think this book, along with All Star Superman, We3, Doom Patrol, etc is one of his best works. It's among one of his most 'literary' efforts and it showed that he could be just as capable of a storyteller as the big dogs of his day, such as Moore, Milligan, or Gaiman. It's kind of a paradox, like The Killing Joke, where everybody knows it, yet nobody does.
Bolland is an all-star, but I don't think the book would be as well-regarded if he did it. McKean elevated it into a whole different stratosphere that fit the material perfectly.
Hi! Watched your episode. Great set design. I don't know nearly as much as you guys. I love it though because I'm learning a lot. I enjoy artwork that looks like this, completely stylized and definitely stands out. I think it's hilarious that the writer thought it was too much. I can see why, but sometimes you gotta take some risks. Interesting that he fit all those crazy as topics in a short read? I like stories that are not the traditional "superhero" story. This seems dark and a very cool take. Hahaha I'm gonna use "sexual frozen" as a term now. The artwork in the book looks very modern. I don't know if people would embrace it the same now. Think Hipsters would probably prefer to make the 1989 version a relic. :)
+Tiffy Diamond Thanks Tiff! I think you'd dig this book if you want to check out a short, self-contained, and absolutely bat-shit crazy interpretation of Batman. Great jumping on point for new readers who won't be criticizing it by saying "Batman would never DO that!" (Ahem- the new BVS movie...) as well as old readers who are open to a different interpretation of a popular character. Thanks for watching!
A fantastic video! I just read this book for the first time before watching this video, and it's one of my favorite Batman stories I've ever read. It's completely insane, dreamlike, and everything I wanted in the Alice in Wonderland delve into Batman's psyche. Your commentary is insightful and entertaining. I love your chill energy, and you two have a lot of great chemistry! You gained a new subscriber!
Boy I wish Morrison was Irish, be something to brag about to no one. Also I'm time travelling to old Imperius Rex episodes. So hello from the future (past?)
+Tiffy Diamond -and no worries- that's how most of my trains-of-thought sound at any given time of the day. There's a lot going on up there, none of them important, but all equally geeky and difficult to decipher.
I have tried a few times to read Arkham Asylum but I just can't get through it, the art in several places makes it difficult to make out some of the dialogue. Maybe it's the edition I have but there are a lot of Joker's dialogue in the red that it's not easy to make out what's written. I like the story but I can't skip around on what Joker is saying and try piecing it together later.
seth m I had the same exact problem. Couldn’t read the joker dialogue. I bought it shortly after the first game came out. It really pissed me off. I would try sporadically over the years and couldn’t read it. It would drive me crazy. I could only read the script in the back.I bought the new Absolute edition and it’s a hundred percent better. The only way to go.
@@johnnieriot13 Yeah, I would imagine they've cleaned it up a bit since it's first couple releasings. Being that it's one of DC's premiere books- I can't believe they would let it go on being that difficult to read.
@@johnnieriot13 as angry as this title made me trying to read, it's gonna be awhile before I'm willing to buy the absolute edition but it's good to know they fixed it
He almost gets choked to death by a completely untrained/unskilled guy. I get why people like it but i just cant accept that about the best non-powered fighter in the dc universe.
@nilsalmstrom7107 you have to take the year it was released into consideration. Batman was far from the best non-powered fighter in the DC Universe back then and there were plenty of characters who could kick his @$$ (Bronze Tiger and Richard Dragon being just two of the non-powered individuals who had easily beaten Batman in a one-on-one fight around that time). Batman being DC's best non-powered fighter is a pretty recent development in the character's history.
I get that but a superhero without powers should still be on the skill level of a professional fighter. Which is more then enough to take out one guy who is not even a supervillain. It still dosent make sense to me.@@carlgibson285

I can't stop watching these episodes. Morrison, Moore, Miller, Gaiman, Kirby, even Gerard Way and many more. You cover all the greats.
Thanks again- and stay tuned as we dive even deeper into several of the creators you just rattled off! It's gonna be big.

Originally dave mckean was not supposed to be the artist on the book, Brian Bolland was actually Grant’s first choice.

Yeah, his dialogue is a challenge. I wonder if they've ever cleaned it up in any of the revised editions?
