It's been over 30 years since I read the graphic novel, but I remember liking it. I borrowed it from a friend and liked the tragedy of the story. In the graphic novel, you get more of the flavor of what Eric's love was and why the loss was so hard on him.
It's great that you liked it too. It was a way for James to process his feelings, after his loss. I think that's why it so powerful, as the emotions are real and not fictional for a made up story.
