- What Does Apple's Falling Revenue Indicate? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Apple reported a 4% year-on-year drop in revenue in the first three months of 2024. Though the company beat Wall Street expectations, these numbers represent the steepest fall in Apple's revenue in more than a year. The fall in revenue has been attributed to a slowdown in China and multiple legal cases in the EU and the US. Apple will be hoping that the upcoming iPad models and its investments in Artificial Intelligence will help the company rebound. But Apple's struggles raise questions about how industry leaders can stay ahead of their rivals, especially in the tech industry. Palki Sharma tells you.

Have you looked at Apple stock price after the earnings? Revenues are down but on par with wall streets estimates. And in certain categories, it is better than Wall Street estimates. Their guidance is good and iOS 18 is said to have AI features which will probably turn things around. Majors financial institutions are maintaining buy or overweight rating with higher stock price in next 12 years. The problem is not as big as described in this video. Apple never cared about market share. They care about maintaining profit margins. And they are able to do it by offering the products that just provide better user experience. The competitors may have more features but when it comes to user experience, Apple wins.
Apple was truly innovative 15 years ago. But not any more...the truth is now

8GB still in their laptops is the real reason for Apple's collapse...
they said mac sales went up, didn't they?
Apple 8gb ram is faster and efficient than even 16gb windows.

That's because more and more people are peaking out of the Apple walled garden and finding that they have been in a prison and that outside the wall freedom exists.
💯
i mean they tried to get away selling a 2000$ laptop with 8gb ram, they also charge like 4times more than windows when it comes to ram and storage upgrade
It’s not that people is leaving apple they just stop buying every new model coming out and are probably waiting for AI
They are not getting out of iOS ecosystem they just don't upgrade every year or so. Once u use something premium u will never go back to another option. One of the reason people are not buying iphone every year is phone technology innovation has reached close to saturation point and this applies to every brand which provide regular smartphones ( not some ambitious projects oike rog, foldables etc) also iphone life cycle is much more than other brands which leads to reduced recurring customers. People use iphone for 7 years on average compared to other brands which lower on the scale.
@@mayurwalavalkar9219 7 years on average?? Lol that's the ideal scenario. I see people upgrading every 2-3 years. The same people who bought 12 then buy 13 pro and later upgrade to 14 pro max since the top model is always the goal. The amount of people using it for more than 4-5 years are those who can't afford that in full payment in first place.
Apple is already close to the limit of technology. Smartphone is like a paperclip now it can’t be improved further and no one wants to pay more and more for very slightly better phones when the old ones still work.
I love that paperclip comparison.
I don't think you have tried or used some of the android phones that are trying to innovate an already matured product category. Apple is relying on their brand power alone.

@@user-ji6df6od3f that's a good idea. Buying Apple products are only worth it if you use exclusive apps and services that are there in Apple ecosystem otherwise don't bother
As an avid user of the Apple iPhone 13 Pro, I've come to appreciate its capabilities firsthand. However, I can empathize with the shift in consumer behavior away from iPhones. The reasons are clear: first, the rising cost of iPhones, coupled with additional expenses for storage, can be daunting. Second, while Apple continually refines its camera technology, the leaps from one version to the next may not always feel substantial. Additionally, some users crave the flexibility that Android offers, as Apple's software can sometimes feel restrictive. Lastly, the competition in the smartphone market continues to evolve and improve, providing consumers with enticing alternatives.

Absolutely beautifully covered, Ma'am! Innovation over consolidation!
It is a primary lesson in marketing that the dominant entity in the market should always be on the defensive to protect its top position. That means listening to the customers so as to stay ahead of the competition. Long back Apple stopped listening to the customer. It is my way or highway attitude.
it's Huawei taken back their lose market.
Apple slowdown because of "slowdown of China economy and" strong Huawei sale. How about omit the words in the quotes?
The beginning of the end of Apple Empire!
you forget Blackberry😢
Legends are those who never touched apple phone in their life
samsung's last years flagships are much fairly priced and well equipped to go toe to toe with the latest apple flagships.
Even mac is going to be fairly challenged once snapdragon arm processors will available to consumer
Infinite growth on a finite planet is impossible. All companies need to learn from this and stop devising strategies for consumerism - we only end up exploiting limited resources for no good in longer term
Yes, many people can't catch up with the price. Also, people don't want to go for older models because of trust issues but also can't afford to waste lots of money for the latest model. The same thing happened to my sister and she ended up buying a Samsung phone.
Innovation is everything in any generation and well explained by palkisharma.
The intro line is 100%.... it's much harder to stay in top position
Nice, I love to see it.
Nice cast, I’m motivated and entertained. Keep it up !
Their sales can boost if they reduce their prices...especially in India where it's sold at about 30% costlier
oh mahn , the research behind the video...truly appreciable effort !
I liked the various examples across industries, that Palki’s cited, where market leaders got dethroned from their leadership positions by competition. This is some interesting research by Palki and her team to enrich the story.
In terms of Huawei’s business posting a growth of 560 percent as suggested in this report and Apple undergoing a bit of a correction in its business, one needs to take into consideration the fact that Huawei’s an around USD 200 billion company and Apple’s market cap is of approximately USD 2.83 trillion. Huawei’s a fraction of Apple’s size and its growth is on a relatively far lower base vis-à-vis Apple. The figures aren't much of a comparison.
So, there’s still time and opportunity for Apple to defend and sustain its market share leadership over the competition by keeping up with the advances in technology. On the contrary, rather than keeping up, Apple’s actually been an innovator of technology in the past decade and it should try and continue to maintain its competitive edge.
Apple's only problem is no risk taking anymore as was the case earlier on... Hence, the downfall
It’s just a phase.. Apple had experienced hits in revenues long ago too.. followed with phases of enormous profits
wow, such a good analysis palki
I have iPad fifth(2017) gen and it is still working good! I also have an iPhone 5 (2012) who also still working good ! My ipad still working with all apps ! Now i have iPhone 15 pro and i am locking forward to many year with it.
Apple iPhones only have flagships in line, which is expensive. Other competitors gave choices to consumers by introducing from the cheap lineup to the flagship lineup. Like if the S model in Samsung is too expensive, people can choose A, or F, or M model.

10% drop in revenue in a quarter is not a big issue. Apple has penetrated into development space by making its ecosystem. Developers are bound to produce applications for ios. Apple is under one of the best leadership.
Its just a quarter result. Remember Facebook had negative quarter in Jan.
Its hard to penetrate in apple market because of its ecosystem and ease of technology.
Apple devices are also used in office ecosystem and slowly increasing its market there.
The thing is Apple did innovate but it was through intervals with their M chips. That was revolutionary and the industry is still playing catch up in that respect (long battery life and performance). The issue is that the actual look of hardware is staying the same.
I don’t think you will find a better computer chip for a while (even when snapdragon make their new chips later this year).
Same phone but increasingly higher price every year. Other android phones are catching up or equally good while getting cheaper
The midrange class is amazing, performance and photography wise that you could say rival that of these flagship products but at a quarter of the price.
Thank You.
Huawei is light years ahead of competition in terms of camera hardware and computational photography. I have a Mate 50 Pro, a ~$700 phone with physical apperture (f/1.2 - f/2.0), nice looking bokeh in portrait photos, great screen, etc. Its night photos will make your jaw drop - they're crisp and look like beautiful HDR. And it's not even their flagship phone.
I love huawei pura 70 ultra the best more than Apple
Remembering Steve Jobs.
Its a very fine balance between innovation and stability. Too much of either will affect the brand negatively. Larry page for Google, Steve Jobs for Apple and Elon Musk for Tesla are all into hard core innovation but all of them faced problems eventually. Tim cook is on the other side of the spectrum.
Now time to reduce cost
Apple products are normally quality products. This means most people are most likely to keep their iPhone or MacBook for longer. Also the fact that its services are still bringing in profits iterates the fact that Apple devices users are holding on to their devices. The revenue may not increase but it doesn’t mean Apples lead is falling.
Nice article Ms Upadhya! But, I just wanted to express my disagreement with something that you said. I disagree with what you said about Tim Cook’s leadership at Apple. Nobody, I think, other than him would’ve done a better job of carrying Steve Jobs’ legacy forward for the company. It’s true that his vision for the future of the company was somewhat different from that of Steve Jobs, but he is a major reason, since he joined the company in 1998, for Apple being what it is today. And it’s just not true that Apple didn’t innovate under Tim Cook’s leadership. He thought that Apple had to not do stuff that could be more “fun” and experimental, which would affect the functionality of their existing products and the features they offered, which is exactly what happened to Android a couple years ago. And this is what, I think, he meant by what he said in that interview. It is true that Apple has not been innovating enough for the last year or so and although I’m not exactly sure of why that’s happening, I think that is mostly because they had to fight through the lawsuits filed against them by the US government and the EU. So, I hope that this phase where we’re seeing relatively less innovation from the company is temporary and that they recover from the hard time that they had for the past 2 years soon.
Sleep with Tim cook
To be fair to Tim Cook, not doing everything Apple can was also a policy Steve Jobs had. He's famously said that they'll only do things they can do really, really well.
She is like my aunt, reprimanding me, comparing me to these good kids, showing me all their stats, good and bad, for me to succeed in life. I like her.
saw the latest ipads. sure everything is better than samsung tab s ultra but with insane education deals and good-enough tech like 1 layer oled, 14 inch, free spen, free keyboard bundle, proper desktop-like experience that was already available 2-3 years ago, i see no reason why i need to pay for ipad pros oled unless i get them from the second hand market at the price they are truly worth.
I don’t see a problem with apple, remember androids are doing much better today, but there are so many androids out there today, apple for me is just products that are extremely reliable and that I think is one of their biggest selling point.
Very nice analysis 🎉

I agree. They rose by innovative, Steve Jobs died with the innovative spirit. All other leaderships at Apple are simply business men and women. Steve Jobs was a true creative, he cared more about being bold, daring and of cause, different. RIP Steve Jobs. Leadership in the corporate world can only do what the shareholders will allow. Yes, good leadership sells a vision to the shareholders. Ultimately, though, the motivation that drove shareholders to buy stock in the first place will guide their receptiveness to the message of the leadership appointed by the board. Shareholders who come to a corporation for quarterly dividends won't be receptive to a message of innovation, which both diverts money from dividends and risks creating projects that won't be successful. A large and successful company will attract prospective shareholders who are looking for a blue chip investment, not an opportunity for rapid growth.
Most likely a temporary reaction to geopolitical pressure. Once the alternative sites are fully up to speed, Apple might just surge again. Am not an apple user but it seems the company culture simply won't accept failure.
