Fun fact: Around the time this episode premiered, Alex Hirsch (show’s creator and the voice of Stan, Soos, McGucket, Bill and several others) uploaded an image of a younger McGucket writing the journal to make us think he was the author, AND IT WAS FAKE!!! 😂 The man is so smart with hidden codes and mysteries, to the point he tricked us with a fake leak HE MADE!!!
So to add to this there's so much more to the hoax, it was back near the end of season one the fan base was close to something that would have ruined a huge plot point. So they whipped up the image took a picture of it on a monitor with time and production codes, then uploaded it to 4chan with a story they'd had an office tour and saw it on a monitor. Then to help sell it they took another photo with a shot from Gideon Rises so that when it aired more people would believe it. Alex made and quickly deleted a tweet about how mad he was at the leak and only after this episode aired did they reveal the truth by recreating the photo just with Alex in it.
I love how this episode retrospectively explains so much about this town. Not everything, mind, but just how stupid the townspeople can be - especially the cops! Of anyone, they were likely mind-wiped the most since they'd show up to scenes of weirdness first (though they did still get to be secret keepers for the Quentin Trembley thing...)
11:16 Those things that flew into the portal actually made a very brief cameo in episode 1x09 of Rick and Morty, where we see them pop out of one of the multiversal portals opened up in the episode
I always loved this episode because Mcgucket is one of my fav characters. The scene where he goes "You can't break whats already been broken" gives me chills every time. Also i love that the Society of the blind Eye perfectly explains both, why Robbie and the other townsfolk see supernatural stuff but never comment on it and why everyone in the town is slightly insane because their mind have been erased time and time again. Oh btw, i love that Mcgucket has become much more important in season 2 because at the start of the show he was only planned to be a one off prospector character that was requested by disney.
Soos: “Mabel, for half the summer I thought your name was Maple, like the syrup. No one corrected me!” Mabel: “I only love SOME of my stuff of my animals and the guilt is killing me!” Dipper: “Sometimes I use big words and I don’t actually know what they mean. I mean, I supposed to be the smart guy! If I’m not the smart guy, who am I?!” Wendy: “Okay, I’m not actually laid back. I’m stressed, like, 24/7. Have you MET my family?!”
I read somewhere that the second time Robbie meets Dipper, he says he doesn't remember him from their first meeting (with the haunted store. It comes across as him just being a jerk, but it may be that he'd had his memory erased and really didn't remember meeting Dipper the first time :-)
To go along with all the Rick and Morty comments the exact episode where you can see Gruncle Stan’s cup, notepad, and pencil come through a portal is season one episode 10 Close Rickounters of the Rick Kind. When Rick and Morty finally escaped from the citadel of Ricks and our Rick lays down a string of five consecutive portals right next to each other for a brief second in the first portal he laid down at the back of the scene you can see the exact same coffee cup, notepad, and pencil float through while the guard Ricks are trying to figure out where he went.
Going back to Sock Opera, I wonder if Bill is *unable* to not keep his part of the deal, as breaking the laptop *DID* give Dipper a clue as promised, since he likely wouldn't have discovered it if had never been smashed.
that seems pretty in line with everything we've seen. he has indeed kept deals or promises, they just usually play out like a be careful what you wish for scenario with him twisting how things go, usually in his favor. the only time we have every scene a deal be broken was his debut episode, and even then that was Gideon who broke it, not bill.
over the next few episodes, look at stans hand: it’s still bandaged. it’s been confirmed by the creator to let the audience know the stories are interconnected. though the next few episodes don’t deal with the portal we haven’t forgotten about it, and it’s worth it when the payoff finally comes
2:47 This right here is the scary thing about Bill, he technically doesn't lie. In exchange for a hint for the laptop he wanted a puppet. The puppet he wanted was a human body to inhabit and control to his heart's content, and the clue provided was destroying the laptop to reveal the McGucket brand.
@@zebreacts9706 Bill can see the future so I think breaking the laptop for an eventual clue is not too far fetched. Like for example in season 1 episode 19 when Bill came out for the first time there were pictures flashing on his bodies. It had jfk, ufos, pyramids and the destroyed hand of Gideons robot. So he can see some future since he knew Gideon would use a robot and it would be destroyed.
From the IMDb trivia page for this episode: "Near the end, Grunkle Stan accidentally drops his pen, notepad, and mug through a portal. These items can be seen coming out of one of Rick's portals in "Close Rick-Counters of the Rick Kind" on the show 'Rick and Morty'..."

Oh yeah, and the pen pad and mug that go into the portal, rick and morty did a nod to gravity falls by having one of their portals expel those items in the background.
It’s so good seeing people still discovering this show. Previous to this show I hadn’t really watched any cartoons for 10 years. I had felt I had aged out of it and the content wasn’t that engaging. This show though surprised me. It works on so many levels, it has all the stuff that keeps kids watching but also the mysterious and cryptic stuff to keep adults watching as well (along with the veiled adult humor). I truly hope that Disney+ brings back the show or does a movie.
Honestly, it's one of those gems that's best left untouched. It's a neat, satisfying show which tells the story it wants to tell, and does it well. I'd rather it remain just the two seasons and the minisodes than have it come back and be awful =/
@@georgercop the only reason I am up for Disney bringing it back is that the end served as both a definitive end but also left a possibility or two of it continuing. Personally if I were in charge of this sort of stuff at Disney I would see how the show has had such a lasting impression (especially for one that only went two seasons) and would approach Alex Hirsch to come back and do it himself, giving him complete creative control to do either another short run or a short run with a movie as it’s finale. In the past Hirsch has said that he would love to come back to do another run on it and already had ideas. I think with Disney+ there is a golden opportunity to do it.
Fun fact: just read about a couple of case studies in my personality psychology textbook that seem to prove that personality, while formed (partially) through experiences (or changed through them), are not contingent upon remembering those experiences!
This is hands down one of my favourite episodes I literally have the society of the blind eye mark spray painted on my wall in red, and the fiddleford "plot twist" was just amazing like when you really thing about it it was super obvious he used to be a normal dude like he had a family and watching him loose his mind slowly is just heartbreaking. In a similar vein of 'kids' shows that have deeper lore and an overarching story, I'd be really curious to see what Paula and Katrina would think of House of Anubis. That was an interesting one.
Not a spoiler, but in this episode there's a fun tie in with Rick and Morty. The items Stan was holding that got sucked into the portal appear in Rick and Morty's 10th episode (The first time was see the council of Rick) when Rick creates a whole lot of portals to lose the Council Ricks, they can be briefly seen flying out of one of the portals. This is my favorite episode of Gravity Falls, because it centers around my favorite character: Fiddleford Hadron McGucket, the most lovable spree killer in all of fiction.
