    It’s your money...shop away. I spent $165.00 at one store, and I have to go to another tomorrow. I don’t mind spending money on food since it fuels my body.

    Hi Madeleine, despite being an avid youtuber watcher for years now I think this is actually the first comment I've ever left on a video.
    I'm not sure if you'll see this, but on the off chance you do I just wanted to say how much you have helped me over the past year. I bought your e-book and have pre-ordered your new one. I love how accessible your recipes are, I've never yet found someone who makes vegan recipes that aren't super fancy and uses exotic ingredients except for you. I was veggie for years, then dairy free for a year or so, but finding your channel helped me take the plunge into cruelty-free eating because I was able to learn so much from you about how to cook easily and cheaply as a vegan.
    Also, your disclaimers around disordered eating are an absolute breath of fresh air. I used to stress so much about food because every recipe online is calorie counted and tells you how many portions it is. Hearing someone say, simply, that everyone's appetites are different, eat consciously but eat til you're full, and all that other good stuff you promote, I honestly think it saved me. Especially as a fellow tall girl I used to always feel self conscious about how much I ate, despite never really being overweight. I'd never even considered that hey maybe my body is bigger so I need more fuel. Anyway I've rambled, but I've been wanting to say this for a while now. So thank you for all you do, you help me so much. Peace and love

    Good for you for telling people you'll block them if they leave negative comments. Its so refreshing to see people taking a stand on youtube about negative comments. Its just not on saying rude and personal comments that harm people. I'm just loving your attitude Madeline, you go girl and Alex too of course, he's such a sweetheart and a funny guy. xx

    Also we all have the right to choose how and where we spend our money. I'm so happy you mentioned the joy of shopping small. I have to do most of my shopping in supermarkets as I don't have the budget to shop all local but I allow myself some leeway to buy from small businesses because of how it makes me feel. I've had a bit of a hiatus from youtube, so happy to be back watching you again xxx

    Frankly, it isn't cheap, buying food. After the pandemic, lots of foods became more expensive due to transportation. It's hard for me, a single person to not spend around $100 for a few bags of groceries. So I can't judge the two of you for what you spent. :D

    • @misspeaches1144
      @misspeaches1144 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Buying as a single person can actually be more expensive than buying for a couple or a family, because you don’t go through stuff quick enough to justify buying the bigger value pack and end up paying more for the same amount, so shopping for one or two people is about the same cost from my experience

    • @bayleyboy27

      Brexit will make it cheaper, because the EU slaps high food tariffs on non-EU food imports to protect EU farmers at the expense of impoverished countries around the world.

      Actually coming from a different country and going back home 2x a year I can tell you that food in England is cheap!! I'm always so shocked how expensive food is in my country.People in Austria earn 3x as much as people in Slovakia and yet it's cheaper to shop there.but it is what it is.
      The only thing I find is that buying vegan food is very expensive (I'm not talking about fruit and veg.)and I feel that people with allergies or different dietary preferences have to pay more.

    Love this video! Always a fan of your budget videos and it great to see a shop where because you have the means you spend you £ intentionally and with purpose with who you support. This is usually how I try to shop, weekly riverford box, refill store and the local small businesses, due to the pandemic and lockdowns ive had to close my business, I'm just making ends meet if the lockdown is extended I fear we may be at the food bank. I've been feeling awful for not supporting other people in the way i would like but you reminded me that sometimes you just don't have the means to do so and that's ok. You're videos always calm me and help me see that doing you lr best at the time is OK. Thank you xx

    • @MadeleineOlivia
      @MadeleineOlivia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Oh wow please do not beat yourself up at all for not being able to support local business if you have been through everything you have been through! The onus is not on us to change the food systems. Yes we can do our bit, but honestly those with money are usually the ones who are causing the most harm. If you’re struggling the last thing you need to be thinking about is your food footprint or reducing waste etc. Your priority is taking care of you! This is not your responsibility. We can only do so much, and it’s not on your shoulders. Sending a huge huge huge hug xxx

    I don’t want to step on any toes but it’s naff all to do with anyone else what you do or do not spend. You’re grown ups, you work hard and you’re supporting local. I wish there were more shops like that in Nottinghamshire. I’d love to buy in bulk, locally and I might sound daft but buying food in plastic hurts my heart. I can’t stand it. My brother and his family live in Cornwall. I can’t wait to go and visit them.... I’ll make sure I go in the shops you mentioned. Completely off the “shopping” topic, I’ve been struggling with my mental health and your videos lift me up.... so, I’m re-watching your videos from the beginning. I’m up to your move to Brighton and you’d cooked LM rosemary sausages, roasted potatoes and veg! You look completely different with short hair and a fringe. 😘 Thank You for being a distraction, I’ve not self harmed today.xxx

    Organic farming is a debatable topic. I do agree with you that is more environmentally friendly in the pesticide, herbicide area but they do still use them, it's not like they ditch it all together and only use manure, compost and so on. You definitely need to check UK's guidelines to organic farming as the amounts of pesticides are different in every country, but it definitely doesn't mean they are ditching it all together. Also they usefar more land than conventional farming in order to make comparable amounts since the land isn't as productive. And there is loads of more aspects to it, I am actually studying agronomy so I know a few bits about it. I am not suggesting you should stop buying organic, definitely not, just be mindful and know it's not all that great and sometimes paying such a higher price just isn't worth it.

    I think supporting local/ethical/vegan/organic businesses is a great reason to be generous with our money, if anything spending more honestly is best, putting money into our communities! I need to find local shops around me, though surely they couldn't be more beautiful than the lovely shops of Cornwall!! Thank you for showing us, and I hope to see them one day soon...

    another really important thing to remember is that, whether you shop in premium, low waste stores or Lidl, your shop fluctuates! Some weeks I'll spend more because everything needs replenishing at the same time, and other weeks I will just get the veg that I need for my meals and I won't need anything else. Such a great video and so important to shop local where you can! x

    Loved this video! My local morrisons do ‘wonky veg’ boxes and for only £3 (yes, £3!!!) we scored : 6 white onions, a massive cabbage, a swede, 4 baking potatoes, 2 courgettes, loads of loose carrots and parsnips, and a few loose new potatoes too - packaged in a big cardboard box with a recyclable plastic film cover. It’s so great seeing more and more options coming together for a wider range of budgets and lifestyles 🧡

    Ohhhh I used to live in Penryn and seeing you walk around Falmouth makes me miss it so much! I absolutely love The Natural Store and it's so nice to see you supporting local businesses there. You might have just convinced me to move from Plymouth back to Cornwall . Love your videos Xxx

    About the rude comments: people tend to forget that you also have to include staples in your shopping. Also, you're in lockdown, you're going to get food for everyday and a treat to break the monotony. Everybody does it and nobody should make anyone feel bad for doing so.
    With that said, LOVED the grocery haul. Unfortunately, I am in the Appalachian region and some of these things are not available to me but it is good to know that there are a lot more companies willing to go organic, ethical, and sustainable. Looking forward to more videos supporting local shops.

    ALSO locovore (the company that did the tinned black beans) is an environmentally conscious grocery chain based in Glasgow! They also sell a lot of tins cheaply to food banks and are just a generally great company. So great that they have expanded and are selling across the country!

    Thank you for uploading this one finally, it nice to see how you normally spend. Being able to not use a budget it a luxury, don't feel guilty for being able to do this. I really enjoyed it. Also, watch Bobby Parrish - Flavor City, he has good videos about organic vs non organic and you should definitely research your garlic. So much garlic is bleached!

    My husband and I are not vegan. My husband has his normal lunch routine of turkey and rice. Meat is expensive now during covid. We used to be able to buy our groceries for about $80 a week. But now we are spending closer to $150 for all that we need. Everything has raised in price. Good for you for supporting local businesses! My area does not have a lot of small shops or farmers markets. I have to go to 3 different stores to get all that we need. Aldi, Valli Produce(they are the cheapest in the area for produce, and that's all I buy there) and Target(I can get better deals on certain items with their 5% off using Redcard and coupons through an app). I hope everything goes back to normal soon.

    I love this video!! It's so important to try support small local business where you can. It can definitely add up, but I know where I am it's actually cheaper a lot of the time to buy fresh produce local. Amazing to see all the cool things you found! Congrats on the eBook as well, so excited for it to be released.

    You shouldn't feel guilty or be shamed for how much you've spent or bought. That's what I keep telling myself too, everything got more expensive, plus we can't go outside whenever we want, of course we'll spend more in one trip. I hope you'll get through this lockdown safely. 🤗

    Northern California not in lockdown yet. We're in purple tier eating outside at restaurants, gyms are closed, stores can only have so many people. We have a 10pm-5am curfew. It feels like over here food cost has gone up or the size box (oz) has been smaller. The BOGO free is now BOGO 20%off. So spend more over here too. I too felt good trying to support local businesses because we don't want the to close. Thanks for letting me know what's happening over there. Stay safe.....

    Excellent video Madeleine and I agree with trying to support local stores. In Dundee where I live there's a store called The Little Green Larder which is a zero waste store so I buy my bamboo toothbrush, reusable dishwashing brush heads from there. They also stock a soap brand which is based in Blairgowrie that makes vegan and plastic free soap( the company might make non vegan soap but the store only stocks the vegan products) so i buy the vegan products from that company. I also refill my jars with the dried foods sold in the Little Green Larder.
