This may be the first knife you have done a video on that I actually plan to buy. We have very different tastes but I do appreciate the sheer volume of gear that you make content about. Thanks and cheers.
I really liked this design when it came out but I was hesitant to buy one just because of Gerber's reputation. Your review pushed it over the edge for me and I bought one today. I paid $110 with Gerber's 15% off code so I feel like I got a good deal. I like how you said it was like a mix between the BM bugout and the Ritter Hogue. It's got the perfect blade shape, great weight, feels substantial and good build quality. All of those make for a recipe for a good knife. Thanks MC for this great review!
I love gerber and got this knife couple years ago, one of my favorite knives from them no doubt. Good materials and great ergonomics. Still holding up well.
You NEED to check out the Savvy. I have one and it is even better. The washer system alone is amazing. It’s two bronze plates fixed to the handle via pivot and stop pin. Super smooth action and rock solid lockup. The 20cv is really good as well. Awesome review man!
I’ve been waffling on whether or not to get one. I’m worried about how far out of the pocket it hangs because of the clip and Gerber’s past quality issues. I’ve been hoping MC would review it RSN.
@@EWTHeckman the clip is pretty deep ride. Very little sticks out and the retention is good. The QC on mine and another individual who posted about theirs is great.
I purchased a Gerber knife at Walmart about 15 years ago to do a job where I had to shingle houses. I don’t remember what the name of it was but it was exactly what I needed to cut shingles. It kept a good edge and sharpening wasn’t a huge factor. It finally got stolen after a year. Either that or dropped into a gutter. My main point is that it lasted a whole year and probably longer on a job where it was use continuously. The only maintenance I had to do was some sharpening and a little bit of oil every once in a while. I’m not saying all Gerber knives are that type of quality but this one definitely paid for itself. I think I paid $35 for it.
Been lusting after this knife for a while and I'm considering getting one for my dad for Christmas. The Griptillian was the knife that really got me into the hobby and the Sedulo seems like it's poised to follow in its footsteps. It's been hard to afford US made knives and even harder to justify them against the quality that China is putting out these days, so it's refreshing to see good American stuff that isn't just another $200+ Benchmade or Spyderco sprint in exotic steel. I'm just a sucker for utilitarian stuff I guess. I've had the stonewash blade with urban blue handles and blacked out hardware from their custom shop ready to put in my cart several times and just haven't pulled the trigger
This is like a better version of the Benchmade Redoubt. It's nice seeing no texturing under the pocket clip, which is definitely an improvement. Granted, I don't personally want any texturing on the clip side to begin with but it's still an improvement. I'd say it's got better steel as well. Only major issue is the roughness of the plastic, it's not as refined but that to me ain't an issue. Not a fan of the style of blade but I hope to see more reverse tanto.
I could be wrong but this blade doesn’t use washers but instead has a bushing so if you take out the pivot you can pull the blade out without taking apart the knife handles/liners
Instead of traditional washers it has a single bronze bushing pressed into the blade that has the pivot hole drilled directly through it. It's an interesting setup. Check out Nick Shabazz's disassembly video to see.
YEEEES! T8 pocket clip screws should be the future. I love my Spydercos, and Benchmades, but other than the wire clip, i have no clips on them, because the T6s have worn loose/get stripped.
I have bought many Gerbers over the years and never found one dysfunctional. When I pull out a knife it is for a job, not a presentation. Knife snobs wouldn’t buy one but if you have actual use for a knife they do the job at a reasonable price. Great review, thanks.
I have had several as well, and they really never let me down. The problem is in the same price range, you can get much better steel and fit and finish with other brands. It seems like they are stepping it up lately tho so we'll see.
I had several as well. I thought they were just fine at the time…. Till I tried something better and realized how much better a knife could be. It’s true that good ergos and nice action and great edge retention are NOT necessary for a knife to do the job well in most cases. But when I can pay a few bucks more and get all those things… it’s a no-brainer. I’m happy to see Gerber making something that’s several steps above their usual wal mart crap. I ordered a sedulo. Would like to see gerber do more like that in the future.
Nice way to speak alot of words but not actually say anything 👍 Nobody is saying they are DYSFUNCTIONAL. They are poor quality and poor value. (Slides Preparation H cream across the table)
Wow! Glad I didn’t get into the political side of knives. Further explanation if needed is I’m retired and have numerous jobs on my lil’ 5 acres. I abuse the hell out of my chore knives. I wouldn’t use a $75 knife to dislodge a rock from the garden or cut up cardboard. A cheap Gerber paraframe or a Milwaukee utility knife suits those jobs without concerns for the tool. I own some much better blades but wouldn’t abuse them. Sorry if I offended anyone.🔪
Billboarding on the blade is serial for when these are issued to individuals, so that whoever is supplying them can keep track of them being given to said individuals.
i got one, waited a over month to get it, blade was ground with a big wave in it, they said they were gonna remake the blade, sent it back, another month later, got it again, they simply reground the blade. and mine is way stickier than yours. mayhaps you got a better handbuilt knife than I. But i dont think i'll be buying any other "custom shop" knives from gerber
does anyone know the color of the scales? on gerber's website, i see a sage green and a coyote brown, but the brown appears much darker on their site than in this vid.
The Savvy is another winner for them. Price starts at $199. CF version is $249. You are getting better materials depending on who you ask. That knife is Gorgeous! Ooooo and guess what? It comes in a Suoer steel called 20cv Oooooo Ahhhh Sedulo weights 3.6oz? That's perfect. I really may buy this knife. I mostly like the injection molded scales not being hollowed out. It's just like when the Glock came out, people called it a plastic. Now it's in majority of gun owners hands. Bound to happen with knives as well.
I love mine but the quality still isn’t to benchmade or spyderco level my blade came almost touching the liner and not worth the time to send it back but you would think with it being a custom there would be added quality control. I bought a custom fast ball with it and love it and quality is there. gerber needs to work on the consistency of quality I really want to love gerber USA made knives but they need to try harder to complete with benchmade quality. Love the vids man keep on pumping out the content! The gerber savvy would be interesting to see on the channel.
I'm going to give it a shot, but I'm not holding my breath. I've purchased 3 of the fastballs with s30v. All of them had off center blades and liner locks that engage @ over 50%. We'll see. I really want this company back in the game. They had a decent rep in the 70s.
So the Sedulo arrived, and as I expected, I still don't own a Gerber knife that has a properly centered blade. That's a big deal for me because it's just not that hard to do it right. Everything else in this video is spot on, so I'm generally pleased with the knife. I would note, that personally I wish the scales were fully open so that you could see both standoffs. I also wish that the studs and lockbar caps were the same color as the standoffs. This is a completely subjective personal preference, but I do think all knives should be done this way. If you're gonna color the standoffs, color the rest of the hardware.... 'cause it's classy.
I admit Gerbers knife game has been lacking for years. But us that have been collecting for a long time remember (I'm 61) when Gerber was at the top of their game.
I'm sure it's been said but you should take out the blade, I think you'll find the washer set up very interesting. And you can do it without taking the rest of the knife apart.
Looks great but I noticed when you pulled back the "axis lock" the blade didn't do anything and you had to manually close it....that's pretty terrible action IMO.
It looks like a knife but for the price it feels like I'd just get a bugout or something.. or if I had a bugout I'm not sure there's anything new about this to warrant getting it. Perhaps I'm wrong. It does look nice.
I honestly liked the Downrange design, I got the assisted version, which I don't generally LIKE assists, but it felt solid and wished they ran them manual thumb stud opening and without serrations. I know they have the autos without serrations, but they're autos and I dislike autos personally.
After everyone was saying Gerber was back with the Fastball, I checked one out - and quality control just wasn't there. I'll pass on Gerber until they actually get their stuff together.
It's nice to see Gerber ramping up and producing U.S.A. knives. That being said, I find the designs of the Sedulo and Savvy uninspiring. They remind me too much of other offerings that are on the marketplace already. The Sedulo reminds me too much of a Griptilian. If I didn't already have some nice Griptilians, I'd consider it. But I don't see a reason to buy it. I will watch for other offerings. Hopefully they make something more interesting.
No need to make excuses for the plastic scales. It’s a great material for that purpose. “Feels cheap” is really only a perception thing. What we call in the firearms world “fudd lore”. Not sure why people think heavy means better. Lightweight is important for something we carry in a pocket. Nobody gives race car builders crap for building their car out of plastic and fiberglass and carbon fiber because lighter weight means better performance. In the same way, an EDC knife is by definition meant to be carried, and a lighter knife carries better than a heavy one. You’ll never break those plastic scales without destroying the rest of the knife in the process.
I already see one thing about the Gerber that immediately makes me like it more than both the Benchmade knives......none of that hollow, cheap ass "Clackety-Clack" sound when you open and close it. That's the one thing that turns me off of a standard grade Griptillian with Grivory scales..... the hollow injection molded, dime a dozen China toy sound for a knife that costs over $100. At least their G10 and micarta Griptillians don't sound like that.
Not known for quality? You must be buying counterfeit Gerbers, I have Gerber knives and the original multipliar that I've had for decades that I still use every day... 👎
Vs their general competition, no. They are not known for the best quality. This is widely known and has been a topic of discussion in the knife community for a very long time.

I've had mine for almost two years. Very solid knife.

I’m glad to see Gerber start to turn things around from the bear grills era
Nice to see Gerber stepping up their game.
Baked Beans & Road Tar 😂😂😂😂😂 , Bugtillian😂😂😂
On the gerber custom site you can order it in 20cv. I'd love it with G10 scales. I find the plastic feels a little hollow.
