This man, saved my life. I struggled for months with Slog2 in my A6300, doing heavy color grading and the result was always shitty. I moved to getting the result that I want straight from camera, starting with the profile PP5 and James settings. Oh my god, I dont have words. Just thank you.

@@PeterLindgren1 every time I see someone using SLOG on A7 Series I feel bad. Its just mathematics, 14 stops over 8 Bit is way too stretched. Unless you are going for desaturated look..
So, James, it's been over a year since I started using a variation on this setting for myself, and I can quite confidently say it's one of the best picture profiles I've used. I usually use it on my a6500, as I have different settings for the A7Siii I use. The adjustments I made was reducing the Colour Phase to +2 (because I prefer a redder/orange tone to my skin tones) and reducing the black level to -1 because I feel it just gives a deeper black tone to my low light shoots.
Been shooting on the A7SII for awhile now and have been using a custom Still Gamma/Pro Color picture profile lately for all my shooting-typically in moderate low light conditions. After doing a new round of research and consideration, I’m thinking of setting up a 3 picture profile system: Josh Yeo’s extreme low light Still profile, a Cine4 profile based off of Matt Johnson’s for moderate lighting situations, and a slightly tweaked Slog2 profile for bright outdoor shooting. We’ll see how it works!
I've been on the "Yessss m8, this is sick" camp for years now. It's been inspiring watching your color grades transform as time goes on, and this recent picture profile you've landed on is no exception!
Brilliant work as always James! Maybe a video on exposing your image right in a variety of conditions, say some low light ones or when your subject isnt perfectly lit? Would love to see how you adapt to those situations mate!
I have probably tried them all in the short period of time in have my A7III... and this one actually works for me, especially in post. Saved to memory recall 1 and 2. Thanks James 👍
Yo, I know it's a few years since this video was made, but I happened to run into it this morning, and I have to say, this picture profile (with all your settings) in the a6400 is the best I've used. Crazy good. I generally use SLog2, but it's a pain in the as*, obviously, unless you expose perfectly, for the reasons you mention, meaning 8 bit just isn't flexible enough, and so I tried this today, and damn, this looked better than HLG3, or anything else I've tried, other than SLog 2 in extreme circumstances. Thanks so much for sharing this, it is much appreciated. I'm about to begin a big project, and I was feeling like I needed to get a new camera that was 10 bit to really get what we need, but I think I'll get in there with what I have, and maybe upgrade after the film is done. These settings are the bomb! Thanks again!!

Sunday’s are my favorite day of the week now because of these consistent uploads. I feel like every vid just gets better and better too even though the previous ones were all sick too! Random question James: what monitor do you grade on and do you calibrate it? if so what do you use to calibrate it?
Hey bro, I have a really nice Dell Monitor but the colors arent calibrated :( I have to grade my footage on my Razor Blade Stealth as that seems to have much better calibration. A goal for this year is to get a set up optimized for grading!

Hi James, I have the Sony A7iii, Any chance you can make a video showing how you colour grade the footage using this Picture Profile please? You know your the G man. :)
Yes mate you're bang on Re: 8bit vs 10bit vs 12bit. The less bits sampling, the less you can pull or push before you get banding. Combine that with only using a super flat pic profile when you actually NEED it. ie. you have bright highlights next to dark shadows. Otherwise, if you're in a controlled environment (eg. shooting an interview) then you'll get less banding and better image on the picture profile you have to push least
I almost coughed at Color Phase +6. In my experience, skin on the A7SII is always too red, so what do you do? Make it even more red! I'll have to try and see what happens with this.
Don't know if you have ever looked at the Leeming Luts James but I have just been playing with them with my G9 and they are awesome! They also do them for Sony and the awesome thing is you can use different profiles and all the colours will match up perfectly. The colours are also literally perfect! For example I can use Cine D, HLG or V LOG L and they will all match exactly. Its great!

I agree to disagree! I do agree that 8 bit is a bit limiting, and that Cine4 or HLG3 is easy to grade straight out of camera. But you can actually get some really good colours out of Slog2, when you know how to work it. I shot 100% HLG3 for 1 year, and a couple of months ago I started grading a lot, and switched to Slog2. The problem with Slog and why is troublesome for sony is because it requires a better and bigger codec, 100MBs is simply not enough. I love the style of your videos!
100Mb/s (12MB/s) isn't enough for 4K RAW but its enough for 1080p 10-BIT and even up to 14-BIT RAW video. Magic Lantern for Canon is evidence in that depending on the Cameras buffer size. Sony Alpha cameras might have large buffers so the interface doesn't need to be that fast for 8-BIT. The a6000 can do 11fps of RAW images (24MB) in burst in which means its buffer has to be at least 100MB-250MB in size. That's a generous buffer so the 100mbps interface is likely not the issue but rather the compression itself. When you stop recording that doesn't mean content isn't still being written to the SD card from the buffer.
