Been doing this for 15 years or so using the Focusrite ISA 428 pre with the optional Digital card. Has been great when needing many inputs at once like band tracking. Came up with it the same way that you did trying to milk a few extra ins without coughing up coin for one more interface. I thought ppl knew about this hack, but so many here are new to it. Glad that you shared it for the community 🙌🏾
You've probably already been bombarded with this, but definitely separate those two apollos so they aren't stacked. I had my X8p stack with my 16, and the X8p burned out! Had to get the board swapped. It works great now, but I definitely keep that spacing. It looks like one of them could easily go between those compressors, since fets don't run hot and I believe aren't as deep at the apollos. Just a friendly tips to hopefully save you the headache I went through!
Yes most definitely! They recommend each Apollo have space of 2 rack units. Unless the rack gear above them are small and don’t cover the vents on the Apollo. Two Apollos stacked is a BAD idea.
I had a 710d, but the pre's weren't my thing for my remote rig. I went to the Audient ASP 880 and like the pre's much better. I ADAT into my X8 for 12 channels, and then patch my API 3124MV for another 4 if needed. So basically I have 16 channels for remote stuff in a 3U case. I use 2 Apollo x16 for I/O into my API for my home studio, and love the routing flexibility it gives me along with the two Flock Patch 64 for outboard and added I/O. You want something that will change your life? Get a Flock Patch 64. I only use them for line level stuff. No mic input pass throughs. Best money I ever spent next to my API. Love your vids and really fun watching you discover more and more ways to do things. Very informative too.
This is precisely why I got the 4 710d. The 4 line ins and the ADAT make it super versatile. Got an awesome deal on a demo model from Sweetwater. You could pick up the 4 channel Warm Audio preamp and run that sucker in to the line ins of the 4-710d. I've considered that. Love this kind of video!
For a long time I´ve been thinking on get one but I am not sure how works the 5-9 line inputs on it.. I mean, where you can control the gain inputs? Many thanks
Ok Drew ... "I'm new" ... to your channel and UA Apollo's glory! Well, I've been drooling over the 710d, but decided to go Apollo before more outboard gear overload. With this video, I'm feeling great this "April Fools Day 2022" ... knowing that I'm headed down the right UA "rabbit" hole of Glory ... thx man, I'm excited!!
I went down that same rabbit hole, even though just in theory from reading the pdf manuals of all of these units and im also in love with this UA routing idea.
Audient ASP880 8-channel Microphone Preamp is a really great choice. Burr brown converters and can handle any signal you throw at it. I do have an Apollo 8p 2nd gen so it serves well for me to have 16 channels in total.
I have an apollo 8 as my main racked interface and a Twin, which can actually act as a monitor controller for your rack mounted apollos. All my speakers are plugged into the racked apollo, but I can control the volume, speaker switching, mute mono and dim with the desktop twin, even though there only a thunderbolt connected!
Thank you for this video. I'd been planning to buy a UA Apollo X8p (it's literally arriving today) but knowing that I could run my lunchbox into a 4-710!!!!! That did it, I just purchased a 4-710 as well. This gives me everything I wanted for my little studio. Oh, a pre you might want to check out is the Sunset Sound 'Tutti'.
Great video, Andrew. I have two Apollo x8ps, each with an external preamp/channel strip going into each channel at line level. The 14 outboard preamplifiers I use going straight into the 2 8p Apollos at line level are: Neve 1073dpx preamp and Eq (2 x channels) UA LA619 channel strip UA6176 dtrip Rupert Neve Designs Shelford Channel Manley Core channel strip Warm Audio 273 EQ (2 channels) Warm Audio 412 (4 x API-sty;e pres) SSL Six (with 2 x superanalog channels) It's fun to have 14 devoted channels of various preamps, each with different tonal characteristics, depending on the material. I still need to learn more about the adatI/IO. I don't use any of those ports. Thanks for an other excellent video, Andrew, Cheers.
Great explanation! Felt like that explanation didn’t need to longer video unless you really wanted to go into the exact ways and practical setup. Great stuff as always
I don’t have the 4-710, but I do have an octopre hooked up to my ADAT on my x8, with a WA-273 and a presonus Blue Tube taking up the other line inputs. I’m also using the S/PDIF to get two more inputs from my ART Digital MPA II. Funzies.
I love the Expandability of the UA stuff. I have two rack Apollo quads, with adat expansion from a focusrite octo-pre. Gives me 16 mic ins, and 24 line ins
I run a TB3 Apollo Quad with a Focusrite Octopre via ADAT. I have an 8 rack of series 500 pres and an additional UA Arrow daisy chained to the Apollo Quad. 18 channels, 6 unison pres, 4 UA line ins, 8 Focusrite pres, and the Series 500 pres. It all fits in 6 rack spaces with a patch bay to configure the whole thing on the fly. Using ADAT with UA gear is the ticket. More than I use in a home studio.
A Rupert Neve Designs 5025 Dual Shelford so that I can live vicariously through your setup! The 5025 is essentially a modern day 1073, I actually have the RND 5211 and these preamps are amazing, I love '73 style pre's by Warm Audio and other clones but the RND gear is incredibly clear and larger than life and designed by the man himself. With all of that I/O it looks like you're ready for a summing mixer in the setup!
I do this with my X8P, but with a Focusrite ISA428MKii, which has 4 pres and 4 line ins over 8 channel ADAT out. I can have 8 line outputs, 8 ADAT outputs. I also then have a Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 using FW800 connection with 8 mic/line inputs, a Focusrite Octopre with 8 mic/line inputs via ADAT, and can add another 2 inputs via SPDIF (used to us an Art Tube Pre for this). That's another 18 inputs, 8 analogue outputs, 2 SPDIF outputs, 8 ADAT outputs, so 18 out. I can go into Audio MIDI Setup on Mac OS and create an Aggregate Device to get 16 ins from X8P + ISA428MKii, and 18 ins from Focusrite Saffire Pro 40 and Octopre, totalling 34 inputs and 34 outputs, all showing up as one interface when selected in a DAW. I can clock it all together from the X8P.
I do a similar thing with the 4-710d. ADAT to Apollo x4 quad, and run my voxbox, la-610, and stereo Ashley mixer into my analog ins. Voxbox is a sick mic pre. Just saying..
Very cool! I too am a UA user. I think the system is amazing!! As far as your question about content length... I tend to enjoy 'informational' content at 10 minutes of less; 'demonstration' type content 20 minutes or less... IMHO. Thank you for sharing!!
I just got the 710. It's only the single in and out but it sounds great. My first experience with a preamp outside the interface. This is Good to know for the future if I ever get to big boy status. Glad to see that Flock of Seagulls hair style is coming back. Totally under appreciated ...
I don't have any outboard preamps, but I just learned today that I can use my Apollo x8p's DB25 8 outputs (i.e. via a DB25-to-TRS 8-cable snake), to drive a series of powered stereo headphone amplifiers (I have an AKG HP4E 4-channel Headphone Amplifier on order from Sweetwater). With that, alone, for tracking, I can route up to four musician-specific, stereo mixes to cue/monitoring (i.e. to other musicians) in my home studio, as set up through UAD Console. So each musician can have a customized, "More me" mix sent to their individual headphones. What's cool as well is that the AKG unit has 4 balanced input jacks (i.e. 2 separate channels, each with Left and Right inputs)so it can simultaneously carry 2 different stereo mixes, . I plan to get two of the AKG units, so that I could have one unit driving headphones for (say) drummer and bass player, and the other unit driving (say) guitar and vocals, each receiving their own, customized mix. I have an Axe-FX III, so that could be used to route bass or guitars directly into the recording interface for a mic-less setup, and then record drums live (or alternatively vocals live) simultaneously without worrying about mic bleed. I love that level of functionality!!!
I have a used Twin desktop with a Focusrite Clarett+ OctoPre going to my ADAT. Gives 10 channels total with some UA plugins on the Octopre channels at the cost of less than an Apollo rack.
I'm running an Apollo x8 at the center of my setup. I have 8 external preamps running ADAT into my Apollo through the Cranborne ADAT 500 series lunchbox (2x Great rivers, 2x avedis ma5's, 2x Capi Heiders). For the analog inputs, I use the four unison preamps, and then I have four external pre's going into the 4-8 line inputs (more 500 series preamps...Capi vp25, Capi vp26, AEA RPQ 500, Cranborne Camden). This allows me to have 16 simultaneous inputs. I also have some external hardware in line inputs 1-4 that I can switch to in console for the mixing phase.
Get the Universal Audio 6176 PRE there absolutely amazing. I have a similiar setup to you but added the 6176 now and im blown away with the vocal sounds im getting. Great videos you put out, thanks for sharing.
I'm planning to get the Cranborne Audio 500R8 together with some Meris 500 Series 440 Mic Preamps as connecting and powering everything via CAT7 Ethernet seems to be the more versatile version and the pedal loop of the Meric preamps seems very clever. Also 500 modules feel "less oldschool" than some 19" rack gear that has been around since the 70s.
You could do the Warm 412, I have that and they’re great. You could also add 4 “garbage” preamps to have a cool color. Old Yamaha, maybe line outs of an old mixer or cassette recorder.
Next up - Retro Instruments. Their little 500Pre is the best thing since sliced bread for my little home studio. Sonic Weight not unlike a Neve or API, but definitely it's own vibe. The only other thing would be the Burls in my mind. But check out the Retro Instrument stuff, you're gonna love it.
Great use of the 4710! Love watching your system grow!! Also, I personally like the shorter format videos. They're Iike a quick-reference video that we can bookmark and come back to and review from time to time. Keep 'em coming!
i would use the warm audio 312 4 channel thing, sry dont know the right name. its just uses 1 rack space and you get 4 mic inputs in the back or 4 di inputs on the front
4710 adat into my Orion which has 12 built in pres and I’m using a pair of vintechs and capi 312s into to the 4710 line ins for a total of 20. I have a spare adat in as well if I ever wanted to go further.
Another option is to get a Cranborne Audio 500ADAT as your extra 8 inputs connected via ADAT. Then fill the 500 series with any 8 preamps you want. You also end up with an analogue summing mixer and extra headphone sends by doing that. I had that setup with an x8p and x16 originally. UAD make great sounding interfaces, but I actually found their Console software fairly inflexible. I missed real hardware control, so I've moved over to a Presonus StudioLive 32s digital mixer/interface. That way I have physical controls, low latency monitoring, a 32 channel DAW control surface, and build in FX that don't cost an arm and a leg like UAD. The StudioLive did not have ADAT, so I moved to a Radial 500 series Powerhouse. As for next pre's you should get... if you have a 500 series rack, get a couple Burl B1s, and a couple Radial Jensen Twin Servos. They are amazing.
I’ve been thinking about this adat setup with apollo X for weeks and I’m really glad with your video. Planning to buy x8p and adat it with cheaper 8 channel interface to get 16 ins. But wow that 4-710 setup with adat.. that is new to me! Thanks for sharing..
Totally off point but, the plants make the studio look pretty damn sweet. I have been looking hard at UA. This video has helped their case with me. Great video!
First, definitely enjoy these gear/home studio videos. Also, you're basically building my dream desk lol . I have been dreaming of grabbing a 4-710d for the exact reason you're using it (one day). Great stuff dude, can't wait to see some music recorded throughout those pre's.
That's some good info. Thx. I'm currently looking at expansion as well and not sure if I should go with external pres and an x16 or straight to an x8p. My current set up is an x4 with Audient ASP800 for 8 additional pres via adat. I also own a Neve 1073 DPX and to be quite honest I actuall rarely use the Unison pres unless recording a band where I need all 12 of my inputs. I keep flip flopping between the thought of x8p and x16 as I know I'll likely want to add more external pres. This video is going to make me look very closely at the 4 710. As for your question of which pres to get next I love my 1073 DPX and would also look at API or the WA412. Depending on how you want to expand the Audient ASP 800 is quite impressive. The vintage channels get used all the time even on some of my stereo bus mixes. The other 6 channels are very clean. No inserts though, the ASP880 has inserts for each channel.
All this talk about 32 channel I/O makes me think it's getting to that time to pull the trigger and get yourself a proper console dude! Loving how your setup is evolving.
I also have the UA Apollo 8p and I'm hoping to get the UA 4-710 so I can connect my UA 2-1176, UA 2-610, and UA 610 through the Apollo 8p's line in inputs, giving me 16 inputs. Love your new studio setup BTW. I'm building a new studio at my home in San Antonio so perhaps next time you're in the area you can stop by. I'm about a month away from completion.
HMMMM.... Yes yes ..yes.. Always like your videos ! Short format today - ALSO very nice.... I try to play the UAD angle like this : I have a SilverFace Apollo with the TB2 card.. I can ADAT light pipe the Apogee AD-8000 ( that was used in recording "The Downward Spiral"), into the Silver face- Then those 16 outs can go through 16 API 8200 channels summed by an API 7600, there's an Apollo Twin (TB2) that is my volume knob, speaker selector, talk back mic etc.....an Octo Satellite...... I can pull the Twin over to a Second computer and go API into the "Master Recorder" machine......when we are not mixing/bouncing down, 32 Mic and Lines from a Beringher X-32 into the Analogue in on the Twin.... killer Keys submixer.......... and I could light pipe 4-710d into that Twin as well.... thanks for helping me think that one up ! And tell us about your control surface choices in another video, Please? Peace...
With the old Digi 002 back in the day I had the first Focusrite Octopre for 16 channels to record my old band fully live, including 7 or so tracks for live drums.
Andrew! Been lovin’ the channel for a while now! GREAT info! I came about a year late to this video, but I know how much you love your preamps & I thought of something you might want to check out! I picked up a Flock Audio Patch from Sweetwater (SW) a while back, and it has changed my world! You should talk to your SW hookup for the hookup! The original unit I have has 32 in / 32 out, (got it from my SW rep Phil Potts), BUT they make newer, big-boy units with 64 in / 64 out AND even 96 in / 96 out! Scout out some TH-cams about it/them and again, talk to your SW Rep! Imagine all your analog gear, pre-wired, pre-connected, with an app that controls the analog path so that you can mix/match/change your preamp chain with a mouse click or tablet tap?!?! This is some “I-hadn’t-even-THOYGHT-of-that-yet” level stuff! If you’re ever in the Seattle area, it’d be an HONOR to have you come by & check out my little home studio.
Andrew, wow you got me, that's a lot to take in but seems to be a possible future project for my studio anyway always good content and cool video's Thanks!!!
based on what I learned watching your videos, I got a minimalist setup that includes an apollo twin x duo, focusrite scarlett 8pre, and two external warm audio pres (the 73-eq and the tb12). That is kind of the opposite of what you are discussing here, but in many cases less is more. The apollo twin x duo can handle two api vision channel strips on its two unison inputs, plus pultec and distressor plugins on each of the 8 adat channels coming from the focusrite. I was actually surprised that I could get all that with a relatively cheap setup like this.
You should get either a UA 4-110 or 8-110, if you can find one used. I wish they still made them, one of my favorite pieces of all time. Also think about an A-Designs Pacifica; based on the Quad Eight console preamps; super colorful, and unlike anything else you've got. The pacifica is my all-time favorite preamp.
Im 48 i/o with my x8p and 2-x16. I highly recommend the CAPI stuff for pres, as im sure you know. My favs are Daking, they dont get much hype but well worth it, and they arent out of this world expensive. Their eqs and comp are really good too.
Run a similar setup, but instead of running the x8p, and x16 - I run an x8,, Twin X Quad and an Octo Satellite. Here’s where it gets fun…I added a Ferrofish 16 channel AD/DA, Clarrett+ 8, plus a Dangerous D-Box+. That configuration gives me 8 channels line plus 2 pre’s (via the X8), 8 channels of pre’s with the clarrett via ADAT to the Twin, and 16 channels of ADAT from the Ferrofish to the ADAT in of the x8 (TOSLink x4). I use the D-Box + as a Swiss Army Knife for summing stems and DA conversion via AES to monitors (also Focal, just Twin6be’s though.) As far as pres go, I have a mix of API, AMS Neve (88 series), RND, Retro, and Grace. I’d recommend any of those. Especially the Neve 88 series, little more modern than the 1073, same low end, just a little tighter. Have you thought about jumping into 500 series? It works GREAT for flexible I/O (hybrid) systems.
I actually have both! I’ve had a lot of experience on the UA 1176 but never had a chance to use the WA76 until now. So I’m pumped to put them both to work.
Seems like the next preamps you need would be some API pres. You could get the 3124 for 4 312 preamps. Or if you’re wanting uncolored, you could get millennia or grace designs.
Awesome setup Andrew! I would recommend adding API pres! You pretty much have everything else. Btw, your videos look amazing, can you make a video about your camera/lens/lighting setup?
Capi makes those api style pres that colt uses. 4 channels of that style of pre would be awesome . Like other have mentioned you could use a cranborn chasis with the built in conversion( but I think you don’t need that with your current set up)
Maybe a pair of SSL Sixes. The i/o flexibility they offer with mic, line, instrument and stereo inputs, compression, eq, alt inputs side by side rack mount ability, etc.
I have the exact same setup up as you. Hmm.. with the setup… I would go with what I did which is the Neve Portico 5024 4ch. Or you can go API with the 3124MV. 🤟🏻Can’t go wrong with either but the Neve just has that warmth others don’t.
Next 4 pres. With your setup I’d go probably grab a Buzz audio QSP-20. 4 high quality clean but not boring pres would be a good contrast to your warm73.
Didn't realize you could take advantage of those ADAT inputs without another interface. So awesome.
If you ever want to get into the 500 series game, Cranborne audio makes an 8-slot lunchbox that goes ADAT into your interface.
To use the ADAT out of the 710 for all 8 channels, do you have to use 48k or lower sample rate?
What's lunchbox exactly?
@@sqnaaa5 500 series equipment, you can get them with usb or Adat IO there’s a heritage unit with a 10 channel summing mixer it’s awesome.
@@matthewt.donnelly2493 I think the ADAT Spec only works at 48K and NOT 44.1K... but I forget at how many Bits?

4-710 is so nice. I have it on kick snare and overheads usually. The snare being driven is amazing.

Essentially, this is how I run my main system, only I'm running Focusrite. The X8P looks like a great interface.
I would go to API pre to complete your sound colors. I have the x16 and really love it. I'm thinking about an x6 or x8 to expand my setup.... 😄
The WARM AUDIO 4 channel pre is perfect. It emulates api pres is very cool
Monster setup you have there Andrew! 👏🏾
I just got a Ruper Neve Designs 511 and it's amazing. Maybe some API pres?
Great use of the 4710! Love watching your system grow!! Also, I personally like the shorter format videos. They're Iike a quick-reference video that we can bookmark and come back to and review from time to time. Keep 'em coming!
I got the 8p in 2018 too. I need to take a class on it.
You sound as manic as I became, LOL, I am glad I simplified. It's fun watching someone else play with it all :).
i would use the warm audio 312 4 channel thing, sry dont know the right name. its just uses 1 rack space and you get 4 mic inputs in the back or 4 di inputs on the front
Thanks for The Video. I have the Apollo Twin and The Apollo 16 which runs through my analog console. I'm thinking about getting the Apollo X8p too!
I love it , I have a production record studio can't go wrong having a lot of in and outs
It’s simple, New Andrew video: Watch and a like.
I appreciate you!
Wow, didn't expect to hear that Laxcit track in the beginning!
Great video. Super informative and to the point. Thanks Andrew.
That’s why I bought the isa 428mkii 👍
Sick bro, so sick
Peace...
Sorry - a 7800 not a 7600
Very cool, I’m using the SSL UF8 controller. I made a video about it last year around this time.
Another awesome vid dude. I know you're a Warm Audio fan. I really enjoy the Warm TB12 Black. Super cool and versatile pre. Cheers!
4-710d (5 to 8): A-designs Pacifica (perfect for overhead mics), Focusrite ISA 2 (snare top and bottom), or CAPI VP28 (toms).
always liked the Api preamps
4 D.A.V. Broadhurst Gardens pres, Decca heritage, incredible on acoustic instruments.
based on what I learned watching your videos, I got a minimalist setup that includes an apollo twin x duo, focusrite scarlett 8pre, and two external warm audio pres (the 73-eq and the tb12).
Hell Yeah Buddy!!! ❤️🤓👌🏻 Beautiful Setup.
now it makes me want X8P
My main vocal chain is the audio technica at 2020 that goes int the tone beast tb2 black and then into warm audio compressor and into the Apollo x8
Get the Warm Audio WA-412 as your next pre. It’s another cool but different color of pre…always good to have it in the arsenal.
This is great. You should look at the AMS Neve 1073 opx with the interface card OR they mentioned to me they are making an ADAT card soon.
Im 48 i/o with my x8p and 2-x16. I highly recommend the CAPI stuff for pres, as im sure you know. My favs are Daking, they dont get much hype but well worth it, and they arent out of this world expensive. Their eqs and comp are really good too.
What are the best options for sending multiple mixes to a band /multiple personal monitors
I use the D-Box + as a Swiss Army Knife for summing stems and DA conversion via AES to monitors (also Focal, just Twin6be’s though.)
As far as pres go, I have a mix of API, AMS Neve (88 series), RND, Retro, and Grace. I’d recommend any of those. Especially the Neve 88 series, little more modern than the 1073, same low end, just a little tighter.
Have you thought about jumping into 500 series? It works GREAT for flexible I/O (hybrid) systems.
Why did you choose the UAD Hardware 1176 over the Warm Audio 76? I’ve been thinking about getting one of the two.
I actually have both! I’ve had a lot of experience on the UA 1176 but never had a chance to use the WA76 until now. So I’m pumped to put them both to work.
@@AndrewMasters Nice. How would you compare the two?
Seems like the next preamps you need would be some API pres. You could get the 3124 for 4 312 preamps. Or if you’re wanting uncolored, you could get millennia or grace designs.
UA know their story.
Awesome setup Andrew! I would recommend adding API pres! You pretty much have everything else. Btw, your videos look amazing, can you make a video about your camera/lens/lighting setup?
I really love your videos. Manufacturers should hire u to do product reviews and user learning videos
Capi makes those api style pres that colt uses. 4 channels of that style of pre would be awesome .
Like other have mentioned you could use a cranborn chasis with the built in conversion( but I think you don’t need that with your current set up)
Naturally the next step in the sound palette would be 'api'-ish preamps. I would pick clean pres also, love the millennias for instance. (hv-3)
ThanksI needed that
Grab the Warm Audio wa-412 to add 4 API style pres for a different flavor to channels 5-8 on the 4-710d! Great combo 👍
Maybe a pair of SSL Sixes. The i/o flexibility they offer with mic, line, instrument and stereo inputs, compression, eq, alt inputs side by side rack mount ability, etc.
It would be double awesome if you make a cable diagram of all your wiring settings.
Thumbs up and new sub.
I have the exact same setup up as you. Hmm.. with the setup… I would go with what I did which is the Neve Portico 5024 4ch. Or you can go API with the 3124MV. 🤟🏻Can’t go wrong with either but the Neve just has that warmth others don’t.
Add the focusrite isa for your overheads
Next 4 pres. With your setup I’d go probably grab a Buzz audio QSP-20. 4 high quality clean but not boring pres would be a good contrast to your warm73.
Would love to hear your thoughts on using the 4-710D on drums
You just gave me a lot to think about
When Apollo came out….and I heard you could use plug ins on the way into the box….i bought one immediately
I think you should get some API style in there. Either CAPI’s or a WA412
I think u should add the eventide and then you should add the Dante cards plus the waves studio rack servers. Why remove all cpu load?
a 1u 4 channel mic pre would be cool... I love the Daking MicPre 4, totally different than 1073 vibes... great for guitars/drums...
I have a 4710-4 did you try Luna yet gonna love it
Nice, been using LUNA since July 2020. Check it out th-cam.com/video/uma9Qr5Ob-A/w-d-xo.html
What's your experience from the comparison of external mic pre vs unison
?
