I use the Italian bind off, and love it. It's basically the Kitchener stitch on one needle, without the slipped setup rows beforehand to make it tubular. I definitely prefer the one needle Kitchener to having to split the stitches onto two needles. It gets easier as you do it, and I don't even have to look it up anymore. I will add the set up rows on my next bind off. Thank you for sharing.
I’ve heard the italian bindoff tends to flare as it’s not as strong as the tubular bindoff. @Erin Shipley do you find there’s a difference there? @Drowning in Yarn great tutorial, thank you!
It is the same process and result. It just eliminates dividing the stitches onto separate needles. I use it all the time, also. Thank you Drowning for the great video!

I dislike the Kitchener stitch so I can’t imagine ever doing this bind off on a sweater, but never say never. Your instructions are really clear and would be easy to follow

I like the look of this, although I'm not a huge fan of sewing. I've been knitting hats for birthday gifts as of late, and this would be the perfect edge for those I knit from the top down. Some hats just work better that way, depending on what kind of hat it is. Some of the younger women I know prefer their hats to resemble a sock, so what I do is start a very small toe-up sock, and where the cuff would start, that's when I begin the increasing, not stopping until it's large enough to fit a human head (ribbing is optional, but not suggested). Then it's just straight knitting until the actual ribbing takes place. Ending these hats using this bind-off technique would make them that much better. Thank you for shooting this!
I started watching this video 3-4 times and gave up without even trying. I was binding off the bottom of my first sweater and didn't like the look of it. I did a stretchy method... But it looked too wide. Anyway went back and tried this out. The kitchener does take FOREVER (for me) but it's really so worth it. I really like having this finish instead of the usual "line".
I too LOVE the way the tubular bind off looks on ribbing. I've done it on 1 x 1 and 2 x 2. I think I do the Italian long tail tubular bind off too - there are no set up rows and it's just like doing a Kitchener stitch from the one set of needles for 1 x 1. 2 x 2 is a little different and I admit I always have to refresh my memory before doing that one. I love the way the tubular bind off looks so much that my favourite cast on is also the tubular cast on - it matches the bind off and it just so polished, it makes me feel like a far more accomplished knitter than I am! There are so many ways to do a tubular cast on but my favourite uses a provisional crochet cast on. You have fewer starting stitches this way and I find it more manageable even for bottom up jumpers and doing this method stops me having to worry about the stitches potentially flipping and me accidentally mobiusing my jumper. Like everything, it gets easier the more you do it and the end result is refined and simply lovely in my opinion. There's a sweater im currently working on and I wanted to try a different bind off from normal and I was looking at sweaters that I liked the cuffs of and I was prepared to do some archival level of digging to find what bind off it was.... and then I saw this video so THANK YOU omg, it feels like one of those perfect timing things :D
Dude it suddenly clicked in my head! I've watched several videos by other people and was starting to think I was more brain damaged then I thought (strokes. There is no recovering from nerve damage. Inspite of what my hubby thinks.) Now I really want to knit all toe up socks! Thanks for your clear and precise instruction.
I'm a recent convert, I agree it looks great and is really stretchy for cuffs. Just make sure your sweater body/sleeves are the right length though before you do it as unpicking a tubular bindoff is the WORST and takes even longer than doing it. Also for cuffs I use shorter circs the same length, manoeuvring magic loop is a pain for me

Such a great tutorial. Thank you! I’m doing this along the hem of my Field Sweater and love the look. The yarn I’m using is a little slippery on my needles so one thing I found to help was to use a LARGER size when dividing the stitches. I started with a smaller size and was dropping stitches off the ends as I adjusted stitches along my circular cables. What a pain. The larger tips helped give that extra resistance to avoid stitches slipping off the tips.

Thank you! You did it well. I myself need a mantra like: purl on, around, knit off, next: knit on, around, purl off. That's just an exemple , it doesn't fit here. With a „mantra“ I recognize very quickly what I've to do. Something like this I'm missing but you showed all what's needed to be sufficient. Be blessed!

I just started to learn how to knit July of this year and I have already finished knitting my first pair of socks. 3 weeks ago I started to knit my first sweater for my niece. I decided to do the Flax light in adult small size. I just finished the body and the hem ribbing and was okay now how do i bind off. Your video was posted just in time. At first it seemed a lot. For whatever reason, I have the patience with the bind off but not as much with the cast on. I only do the tubular cast on rarely because I just wanna jump in to my project as fast as possible. Haha

I came into knitting after doing darning and mending, so all the finishing steps knitters seems to finer tedious and want to avoid, I actually love doing! Kitchener and long tail tubular cast on give me so much satisfaction. Weaving in ends is delightful!

I just used your tubular bind off for casting off the neckline on my brat’s sweater. very successfully I would say. I was a little puzzled with the finishing of those last two stitches but then I referred to the regular tubular bind off I’m used to. This cast off looks amazing. I can see how easy it would be for sleeves, but for binding off a top down sweater at the waist, I'd imagine it would be hard to manage the very long lengths of yarn required for three times the length of the width of the stitches. Is there any way to address this? I usually knit with wool or cotton, but this time, I'm using an acrylic yarn and I'm not sure it would cope with such prolonged use. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. 😊😊

Just started watching your videos - they are really well done. I really appreciate the clear instructions and they are so well filmed. Got a question, I'm finishing my first sweater and the sleeves end in 8 rows of seed stitches. Any bind off recommendations to avoid the bind off flaring out but something a beginner can manage?
There's a pretty easy way to do Kitchener without moving the stitches to 2 needles (all on one needle as they sit when you're done with the piecea]. I wish I could remember where I first saw it - maybe a Suzanne Bryan or Cheryl Brunette video. I suspect it can easily be found with a search in TH-cam or a browser.
I loved your video for the Alternating Cable Cast On so I went in search of a matching bind off as my usual go to is the Italian bind off, and came across a video by Bonnie Nurnberger here on TH-cam where she shows both the cast on and matching alternating cable bind off. I just finished testing it out on my swatch and I have to say that it does really resemble the Alternating Cable cast on and it is just as stretchy. I recommend giving it a watch and see what you think. On the plus side, it is not a long tail cast off, so you don't have to worry about ensuring your tail is long enough for the entire bind off!

This was well timed! I just got to the cast off edge today on my first garment (magnolia bloom jumper) and realised that, as a cuff down sock knitter, I have never needed to learn any cast offs. Thanks for this tutorial, it worked really well!
Working on my first adult sweater. This video gave me the hmmm moment. If I am spending time and money on a sweater I am going to wear why would I bind it off like a acrylic baby blanket. Can we do this on a twisted rib? I did it the other day it turned out good.. but I'm trying it on my twisted rib something doesn't look right and it's hard to removed start again I am now taking the two rows down maybe I did something wrong maybe I should just knit purl regular row then try again..?
Whoa! Looks great, but I am usually on DPNs when doing a sleeve cuff so would have to figure it out. Something to think about since the results are so nice.
Is this supposed to be stretchy? I tried using this for a neck finish on my first sweater and was so tight I couldn't get it over my head :( I had to spend four hours picking it all apart and restitching with my usual bind off. I just don't know what I did wrong. I kept rewatching over and over and it still didn't work.
I always work the sewn tubular bind off instead so that you don't have to do all that set up or use multiple sets of needles. I think all that gets very confusing. The sewn pattern is a little more to memorize than others but I find it to be a lot less complicated than this process.
I wish that this video didn't skip the setup stitches for Kitchener stitch. I am having trouble finding video examples of Kitchener that use the two-needle method.
I'm so impresses--I loved watching you knit since you hold the yarn exactly the way my mother taught me. Have you ever tried Combination Knitting--popularized by Annie Modesitt? It is so easy especially with stockinette.

For the 2 x 2 tubular bind off I make the 2 x2 rib into 1 x 1 rib before I make a double knit edge. That's what I've done and it works very well.

I usually knit with wool or cotton, but this time, I'm using an acrylic yarn and I'm not sure it would cope with such prolonged use.

Just started watching your videos - they are really well done. I really appreciate the clear instructions and they are so well filmed. Got a question, I'm finishing my first sweater and the sleeves end in 8 rows of seed stitches. Any bind off recommendations to avoid the bind off flaring out but something a beginner can manage?

There's a pretty easy way to do Kitchener without moving the stitches to 2 needles (all on one needle as they sit when you're done with the piecea]. I wish I could remember where I first saw it - maybe a Suzanne Bryan or Cheryl Brunette video. I suspect it can easily be found with a search in TH-cam or a browser.
I loved your video for the Alternating Cable Cast On so I went in search of a matching bind off as my usual go to is the Italian bind off, and came across a video by Bonnie Nurnberger here on TH-cam where she shows both the cast on and matching alternating cable bind off. I just finished testing it out on my swatch and I have to say that it does really resemble the Alternating Cable cast on and it is just as stretchy. I recommend giving it a watch and see what you think. On the plus side, it is not a long tail cast off, so you don't have to worry about ensuring your tail is long enough for the entire bind off!

This was well timed! I just got to the cast off edge today on my first garment (magnolia bloom jumper) and realised that, as a cuff down sock knitter, I have never needed to learn any cast offs. Thanks for this tutorial, it worked really well!

Working on my first adult sweater. This video gave me the hmmm moment. If I am spending time and money on a sweater I am going to wear why would I bind it off like a acrylic baby blanket. My sweater effort deserves better!! Thank you for taking the time to slowly walk thru this process. I do hate Kitchener, but maybe I will rethink why I hate it so much after seeing this. Thank you

Can we do this on a twisted rib? I did it the other day it turned out good.. but I'm trying it on my twisted rib something doesn't look right and it's hard to removed start again I am now taking the two rows down maybe I did something wrong maybe I should just knit purl regular row then try again..?

Is this supposed to be stretchy? I tried using this for a neck finish on my first sweater and was so tight I couldn't get it over my head :( I had to spend four hours picking it all apart and restitching with my usual bind off. I just don't know what I did wrong. I kept rewatching over and over and it still didn't work.
I always work the sewn tubular bind off instead so that you don't have to do all that set up or use multiple sets of needles. I think all that gets very confusing. The sewn pattern is a little more to memorize than others but I find it to be a lot less complicated than this process.
Just realized, almost finished binding off 200 stitches that I have an extra stitch on one needle! What should I do!
I wish that this video didn't skip the setup stitches for Kitchener stitch. I am having trouble finding video examples of Kitchener that use the two-needle method.
I'm so impresses--I loved watching you knit since you hold the yarn exactly the way my mother taught me. Have you ever tried Combination Knitting--popularized by Annie Modesitt? It is so easy especially with stockinette.
