great idea, I'm going to look at this for ideas on my own set. I've noticed with heroquest the boxes take up so much room on the table when I'm playing. I might do a tacklebox like I've done with decsent second ed.
Some food for thought definitely. I've been lucky enough to have been able to get everything so far including the commander of the guardian knights as well as the mythic tier and heroic tier. I've decided that a special box will b the way to go but I'll have to wait until I have a better idea of what the future holds for expansions and other models as future proofing may be an issue.
The original intention for this box was to store the core, Kellar's Keep, Witch Lord, and small expacs like the Rogue Heir. Frozen Horror fitted in too, but I'm probably not going to leave it in there. I am split on what I will do for the future. Normally I store miniatures all magnetised in crates (I've done videos on that), so I could do that for miniatures, and then just house all the cards, tokens, and boards in the core box. However, I am leaning towards plan B, where I will keep the core box for things that are needed for pretty much every mission - heroes, core enemies, character sheets, furniture, and so on - and then house expacs with thematic content (like Frozen Horror) in custom inserts inside their own retail boxes.
I have yet to really organize my sets but the Frozen Horror does provide a challenge. I already use small sandwich plastic bags for the tile pieces even though have yet to really dig into the large room pieces. I'm also slowly removing game pieces as I play the sets. I think the biggest challenge will be the figures especially since I went mythic tier so I've got a few more to go through. This is why I am still planning on splitting up the armies. The undead will exist in Witch Lord, greenies will live in Keller's Keep, and everybody else in the main box. I was given some organizer cases for the figures but with something like the Frozen Horror, not sure how well he will fit. I need to see which one is taller, the dragon or Frozen Horror.
The frozen horror is a huge chunk of plastic. He is approximately 80mm to the top of his axe. I'm not sure how that compares to the dragon. Normally I store my miniatures in Really Useful Box Co crates lined with rubber steel, but I thought I would try to keep all the HeroQuest stuff in the boxes, at least for the time being. I may end up transferring all the miniatures to crates and keeping all the card and paper in the core box.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I think everything fit even when I included the original Elf expansion. I think I actually put the other (non undead and greenie) figures in the Elf quest box and kept everything else in the main box. I didn't take the time to really organize it except the plastic bag for the smaller game board pieces. I admit, I've been dreading the rearrangement of the 2021 set but Frozen Horror and soon to be Elf pack will force the issue.
I can speak from experience, you won't be able to keep all the miniatures from the core game, Keller's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord in that small of a space. It's a 3D Tetris problem, as weapons and posing gets in the way a lot. The Abominations are extra frustrating for this and found the it is best to store them in pairs facing each other at a slight angle.
Actually, they do all fit in there, Frozen Horror too. The thumbnail of the video is proof. I mean, I made the insert specifically to house the core game, Kellar's Keep, and Witch Lord with room to spare.
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Do you have much spare space? I'm assuming it's not going to fit the Mythic Tier miniatures along with Frozen Horror. I'm trying to work a solution for full Mythic Tier to fit in core box, the Mythic tier box does fit in core box with Kellers Keep and Return of Witch Lord but not much real estate left over. Waiting on the Frozen Horror but not likely to fit in core box with Mythic but there might be a chance.
This solution was intended to hold the core, Kellar's Keep, and Witch Lord, which it does easily with plenty of room. Once I added Frozen Horror the miniature tray is almost at capacity, but there is still plenty of room for cards and room overlays. There is a picture on my Instagram (link in video description) with the miniatures lined up rather than thrown in, and there is just enough space to squeeze in the Rogue Heirs when they arrive. From that point, I need to come up with something else. I normally store miniatures for games in crates with rubber steel sheet in the bottom and magnets on the miniatures (I've done videos on that previously). I may still end up doing that for HeroQuest, with all the furniture and card components left in the core box. However, I may go down the route of making inserts for the big expansions (such as Mage of the Mirror) to keep those expansions in their own boxes, and then just put core stuff, Kellar's Keep, Witch Lord, and mini expansions like character packs in the main box.
I meant with space between. All the miniatures look like they are rubbing together, and with my setup that has a lot more space between the minis I still sometimes accidentally rub some together when taking them out. Maybe you aren’t as worried as I am, but after painting for a year I don’t want these paint jobs messed up.
They aren't rubbing together. And when they are painted they will be varnished as well (which I always recommend people do). I store hundreds of miniatures magnetised on rubber steel sheets, and have been painting for a very long time, so if I felt the custom insert needed to be bigger than I would have made it bigger.
Yeah, I saw the Feldherr one. They are really good, and I love my Feldherr inserts for classic HeroQuest and Space Crusade but I can’t help feeling they are a bit of overkill for the new edition.
That is a really bad way to store miniatures, especially if you are planing on painting them. Having them just chucked into a tray like that, they are going to get a little bit bent, the paint may chip off, things like that.
As I explained in the video, there is rubber steel in the base of the compartment and each miniature will have a magnet affixed to the bottom as they are painted. So, all the miniatures will stand up and won't move about at all. While they are unpainted, no harm is going to come to them at all. EDIT... I am an idiot. I am leaving this post unedited because I am going to own it.

Hello! what size width and depth is the magnet under your goblin mini? I wasn't sure if 1mm or 2mm is best to make sure they sit flat. Many thanks. 🙂
The ones I have are 12mm diam. by 1.5mm thick.
