    What a brilliant player Des was (and still is!) - rarely moved back from the table, lightning reflexes, great lateral foot movement and a brilliant backhand. Still coaching in the UK today and passing on his knowledge to youngsters

      Thanks. The styles of play in the 80s and 90s seem more diverse and distinct to me. Here we have a pips out penholder vs a of the bounce counter driver. These days almost all players (especially the chinese) to play a two winged looping game, very boring.

      todays game is all about spin, placement and positioning the body, that combination is what makes todays table tennis more interesting for me

    Saw Desmond play in Philly back in '76. He lost in the semi finals to Dragutin Surbek in the fifth game after being ahead 20-17. It was an incredible match, Surbek's legendary loop versus Douglas' angled blocks.

    that was a very good match, I didn't realize the forehand flip shot was popular back then, it has evolved a bit now, but Desmond played it well

    Was the table higher?

    • @runeselvag
      @runeselvag 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The height of the table hasn't changed since then, but the ball was smaller - 38mm then, 40mm now.

      Oh ok thank you, then Ding was really small, I think I saw the table level up his waist.

    both of them attack so early off the bounce. I wonder how well this style would do in today's game.

    • @The_Paddle_Smith
      @The_Paddle_Smith 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh Seung Oeun, Ma Lin (before he retired). They vary their hitting timing. Sometimes after the bounce, sometimes right off the bounce. It's fun to watch.

      And you know this because you played with the 38mm ball and speed glue and hidden serves.

    douglas reflexes so good

    • @denisclancy3274
      @denisclancy3274 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      billalphonso79 He has average reflexes his brain just got used to playing close to the table as where he trained for years the table was only 3 metres from the wall! True story he was tested in manchester university and his reflexes are the same if not less than an average person.

    • @UnseenSpirit
      @UnseenSpirit 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You also need to remember that the table tennis ball (today) fastest speed is below 70 mph. Yes it's very close to the table, but on average it's probably 50 mph.

    I see 3 rules changed from today.
    1. 21 points to 11 points
    2. 38mm ball to 40mm ball
    3. When serving you cannot hide the ball, the Chinese players when he serve his non player hand/elbow high the ball.. ( It been changed to not doing it)
    Anything else changed ?

      The coaching rule, the ban of spinpips (the short pips Liu Guoliang used), each player has 2 serves.

    • @WorthlessGeek
      @WorthlessGeek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Banning Spinpips kinda killed LGL. Lots of unnecessary rule changes by the ITTF seemingly to "stop the Chinese"

    • @majestytd
      @majestytd 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you sure that ITTF aiming at the "Chinese" to stop them from winning?
      Let me know... I really want to read those article. Thanks

    • @WorthlessGeek
      @WorthlessGeek 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there aren't really articles, it's just my speculation. Why was each country only allowed to have two representatives play in Olympic singles? China could have easily clinched all three medals, but because of that new rule, it was two Chinese and Ovtcharov instead.

    • @andreialexandruparfeni7129
      @andreialexandruparfeni7129 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      majestytd
      Well, you can look at all the major rule changes (from 21 points to 11 points, giving the underdog bigger chance of winning a set because luck plays a bigger part; banning spinpips, which got rid of Liu; making hiding the serve illegal, which made everybody have to change their serve; only 2 players at the Olympics etc) and say that it makes perfect sense for the ITTF to do them if they wanted to stop Chinese domination. Even the Chinese miss the old days of competing with Sweden.
      For example, the formal "excuse" for banning speed glue was that a report said that someone died while being exposed to speed glue. However, no one buys the excuse since no proof has been found that the report is true (there have been some investigations).
