3 years ago in wtttc 2010, a young Ovtcharov got owned by Ma Lin in 3 straight sets.
3 years later in Russian League, a mature and way better Ovtcharov still got owned by a fading Ma Lin in 3 straight sets.
You gotta feel bad for Ovtcharov, it must feel terrible to lose to a retired old man playing rec sports at a club XD.

Ma Lin's footwork is still fast. He used little his backhand reverse shots in this match. Primarily he used his forehand top spin and and backhand chop blocks. Ovcharrov had big problems with ML's FH sidespin short returns as well. ML's third ball attack is still a fearsome weapon. Thanks for uploading and for using multiple angels and replays.

Ma Lin is way better. He returns so many of Ovcharov's great shots or kills , making them look quite ordinary. He is putting his whole energy into each return. Ovcharov's backhand shots are beauty to watch.
Last point was so disgusting. Ovtcharov pops it up slightly and instinctively steps back expecting a flick, and Ma Lin drops the most finessed drop shot I've ever seen.
One of my coaches when I was a kid was a member of the Chinese national first team, and played in the Kong Linghui era and was a traditional Chinese penholder. I'm a fairly decent player who trained regularly since I was 5, but every time I played against this man who had a bad back and limited mobility, he made me look like an absolute fool who had never touched a racket before with just his impeccable push game. As magical as Ma Lin's touches are here, it doesn't do justice to how difficult the change of pace and deception would be to handle if you were on the other side of the table. It's sad to see that this era of highly finessed short push table tennis is over, but I'm glad we have videos like this one to remind us of it.

ma lin can still play with the best, the only problem now that he can play 3 or 4 games at high level out of 10 due to his age, it is hard for table tennis players after 35 the body cant take it anymore... he is no longer in chinas elite team but it doesnt mean he cant play against them...

34 is usually old for table tennis... look at fang zhendong..not even 18...

At this top level, age matters. But in the local leagues, mature players in their 40s, 50s and even 60s rule with their vast experience and simple skills.

This is 7 years ago and both the camera angle and video quality are far superior to the rubbish that the ITTF are coming out with now. The last offering with black tables, orange ball and stupid camera positions was amateurish at best!!
