When I first started this piano journey a couple of years ago, I was motivated to "do it right," and I started to look at massive amounts of material to help me have the right approach. These videos are helping me to emphasize those ideas so that I don't develop any ingrained bad habits. Well done!
Thanks and good luck with your practise! One thing that springs to mind is 'paralysis by analysis' so just be careful not to go too far the other way and overthink every aspect. You have the right mindset but mistakes are part of the learning process and I'm a firm believer in learning mostly by getting stuck in and actually 'doing it' as well as having tips along the way to make the process easier.
@@PianoFromScratch I agree. And, there is no shortage of mistakes to help me learn. I just want to spent my energy on doing it correctly as I build up my facility. I used to encourage my flight students to learn the same way..."begin with the end in mind."
This teaching was so essentially helpful. Thank you for teaching slowly-after all, we’re starting from “scratch.” Thanks for understanding the beginner.
I just started piano and I had lots of problem with the hand position and this video really helped! I’m practicing playing howls moving castle with the tips on this video it really helped me! Thank you so much!
I cannot overstate how helpful this video is. Exactly what I was looking for. I cannot understand why so many piano tutorial videos miss explaining this crucial part that of left out makes practice so much more difficult than it needs to be.
This is a really great explanation of finger positioning and movement around the keys. Many of these things I realize I have learned over time, however you have articulated the many different situations one will encounter and a useful approach to each one. I don’t think I was ever taught more than, “relax your wrist and keep your fingers curved.” There is so much more to it than that depending upon what is being played, as you’ve so nicely illustrated.
I find in my playing (especially hymns) , I have difficulty in good hand placement. I tend to stay on the white field (not sliding up correctly between notes), if that makes sense. I am going to try to incorporate your instructions/suggestions into my playing. Thanks.
Thanks so much for this video - However, I have a burning question that I really can't find the answer to: I am using a MIDI controller (32 keys, Komplete Kontrol by native instruments) to learn keys and I am getting frustrated because I can't go deep enough with my fingers so that my thumb is at the edge of its key. I have to resort to curving my fingers since the keys are smaller than regular keys (like the ones you use in this video). What do you think about this? How should I place my fingers on a MIDI keyboard? Literally no one has made a video specifically about this, thanks so much!
I am glad i found your video. I intuitively realised (after a long time haha) I was twisting my hand to reach notes, in particulae with my pinky. Now my focus is positioning my hands where it feels comfortable and my fingers have much more power.
thank you for sharing your expertise and explaining it so well. I am doing naturally what you described and for me it is a bit like a confirmation that this is quite good and that I am on the right way to learn and develop here. Have a great day- I wish you many "listeners" and "fans" :-) THANKS - MICHAELA
I'm not sure if i can articulate this, but my main instrument is guitar so when I started playing piano, i thought - "Oh great the notes are uniform as the octaves repeat!" However, i've really been struggling with how varied and unique each fingering is!! This video has helped me imagine each chord fingering like a key that fits into a lock that I just have to slowly accustom myself to! In other words, guitar chord fingerings are uniform as you play up the neck, but the note names are very hard for me to remember up the fretboard! Meanwhile, I can easily see and name every note on the piano, but the chord shapes and fingering are intimidatingly varied!
I started to learn (play around with) piano last year. I'm 56 so still mentally and physically able to learn something completely new. I just wanted to say out of all the 100s of videos and piano lesson videos I've watched, yours are without any doubt the best. I've learn so much in a relatively short time.
I started playing piano virtually in vr 😂 for $10. I can't wait to learn more and get my hands on a actual piano ❤ It's totally not the same, though, because I can use mutiple fingers to hit one key that's highlighted and in real life I would hit all the keys and the song would be ruined lol. 🙃 but it's great practice in the meantime 😊
Good evening, thanks for this video, it is very interesting to me to learned this proper position to be made as a beginner, thank you very much sir coz this is my 1st to see your video, it is very understandable for me , hope you'll aways be there for us, as beginner i'm continue watching your video sir , i really like it the way you teach and demonstrate for us, God Bless You Sir...
Good stuff. Any chance you could edit your words to about 30%-50% of what you have here and make your explanations all simple enough for a 9 year-old? That would be so helpful to my younger students!
That might seem a joke, but it's a serious question: I'm a beginner and I feel that my fingertips are too thick to be positioned in between the black keys. I often hit wrong notes trying to do so. Is there anything I could do to solve that, like put my fingers a little bit down on the keyboard or it's something expected for beginner and time will handle that automatically? Thank you.
Marcelo! - it’s simple! Play the white keys almost to the bottom of them, far from the black keys. When you need to play a black key simply move up a bit. Time and practice will solve this automatically yes! But it’s good to know how to target it so that it becomes faster to solve.
Hi thanks for the video, you seem to play the black notes with the “pulp” part of the finger, (I had to google finger tip anatomy) rather that the tip, which you use on the white keys, should you not use the tip rather than this, thanks
Any advise for those of us with thick non-pointy fingers? Every time I try your technique on chords with straddled white keys I pull along both straddling black keys! The only way I manage is by turning my hand so the fingers get in sideways. But that's really tiring and slows me down considerably.
My aim is just to learn to play by hear. Will I be better buying a digital piano or a midi keyboard with 88keys? Please suggest a model 🙏 Thanks & regards
I find myself missing the black keys often when using my ring and pinky, any exercises to get them more accurate. Also learning to finger drum. I kinda wanna texturize my black keys, make it easier to catch.
Being a large chap with chubby fingers, my main problem using the 'upper plain' is getting to the white notes in between the black, without hitting the wrong notes. So frustrating.
Great video! But... the first joint at his fingertips often collapses, denting inward, which is not the most efficient! Keeping the first finger joint strong rather than letting it collapse will allow you to get better tone out of a piano that has strings, and will allow you to eventually play faster and more efficiently!
Iv always wanted to learn how to play piano with that being said someone just gave me 1 lol now I don't even know the first thing. about it and she told me it was just tuned I hope by watching your videos and a shit ton of others that I can learn because believe me as of now my ⁰fingers are tied in a knot it's a Fayette S. Cable
I am learning on a DX100 which looks to have much shorter keys and thinner. An octave on this measures 13.5cm. Getting a finger in between two black keys is near impossible. I am not sure of the size an octave should be.
Hey guys, would be really grateful if you could click that like button above, that would be really helpful to the channel!👍 And let me know below how your hand placement at the piano has been going!

Thank you for this video, very helpful and informative as always! I'm trying to be mindful of my hand placement during practice but one thing I have really been struggling with is pressing the keys when I move my hand deeper into the piano (especially the black ones and especially when it's a chord). I feel like the issue is that I am still having a hard time learning to use my hand weight instead of pressing with the fingers but I am not sure. Do you have any insight?
sounds great so far, but what about reducing the speed of the speach aka explanations a bit, firstly , to make it easier for beginners and secondly for those who are not native speakers, thanks a lot
Hey there. Was watching some of your beginner vids from hmm, dunno, maybe a year ago, and they had links to where one could purchase some of the backing tracks but those links no longer work. Do you have current links? Thanks.
How can I position my finger better when I have to press a white key in between the black keys? Whenever I do, I press the black key at the side part of it unintentionally.

This video was EXCELLENT!!!! I feel more comfortable playing now with these tips. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!
Awesome, glad they helped, thanks for the feedback!
This is hands down the best tutorial I’ve seen on this subject.
