My heart goes out to those watching this without access to a piano. I feel so incredibly lucky to have a keyboard lying around. I hope you all can get that piano you've been wishing for soon ❤
I'll put it to you like this, I'm definitely not an expert piano player. I've just messed around most of my life, learned how to play the first part of yankee doodle as a kid, just the one hand. I've never ever played using two hands. It was extremely easy for me when watching the tutorial. I never knew those chords existed like that. Now, I feel like a whole thing for me has been opened up to playing piano, because the black notes, I've never understood. I have no clue how to read sheet music, other than we learned FACE is on the spaces and EGBDF (Every Good Boy Does Fine) is on the lines from bottom to top. No idea what a quarter note is, what an eighth note is or how to apply those to playing. But this tutorial really opened things up for me.
@@lozza1874 mine has arrived early today. And I gotta tell you... Be. Patient. IMO a lot looks easier than it actually is. But practice is the key. I for myself do see progress though already so yeah.. Good lick y'all!
@@eden4949 oh fab! Maybe we should share progress somehow? I've had lessons before and I can play guitar so maybe there's hope for me yet 🙂 happy playing!
My grandad died around 10yr ago and he had a keyboard, its been at my mums ever since his death..never been used by anyone since his death..until yesterday by me. Now I have no idea how to play keyboard really, but I was messing around with the keys/tones ect and managed to teach myself bits of "The final countdown, wonderwall, beat it" granted these will be the absolute basic version of the songs..but it's a start...and had no help ,tutorials or anything whatsoever, So I'm now I'm actually thinking of learning everything from scratch. I will add that I used to be a drummer in many bands for 15years, and can play bits on guitar and bass too..and I get people say if you can play guitar you can play piano /keyboard..let me tell you that's not the case with me,looking at a keyboard and trying to play it is complete alien to me.
I’m sure experience in music in general will help you out as you progress, with your sense of rhythm and your ears and musicality. But yes getting familiar with the actual keyboard layout and technique etc will take some getting used to. Practice often and things start to feel a bit more natural after a while! Good luck!
Try playing Van Halen’s song called ‘Jump’. It’s pretty easy and fun.... I’m a new keyboard player from a guitar background. It sounds great using a ‘Synth Sawtooth’ waveform. 😊
Exact same circumstances here, except for being an drummer in a band - but I have played guitar on and off for a good while. My Grandads keyboard is circa 1999 I think but will be a good place to start!
I'm so impressed by the delivery style and clarity of objectives in this beginner's tutorial. I'm 66, an absolute novice with no musical experience bar learning the recorder in the 60"s at school, too long ago to even remember the notes etc. A latent yearning to play the piano has been propelled by the promise of attainment I felt when watching your video. Very inspiring, thanks.
I am a pianist and a friend of mine asked me to give my opinion on this channel (and others), since she is keen to start piano (at 35). I have to congratulate you. Although this will never replace (obviously) a teacher, you have done a great job, showing patience, perseverance and knowledge. Well done sir!
I don't have money to spend on a teacher, how should I learn piano, through simply piano?, this youtube channel?, wich youtube channel? Please give me advice on what, I should do. And did your friend get better through this channel? Thank you and have a great rest of your day, Wish you all the best.
Just finally managed to buy my first piano at the age of 42. It’s gonna arrive next week! I’m so excited! Your vid is just the best of what I found on YT, to get me prepared for my piano journey! Thanks a lot! Keep making good videos please!

Thank you for these tutorials. After decades of wishing I could learn piano, at 63, I am finally committing myself to learning to play. I should be ready to play Carnegie Hall by the time I am 163, but in the meantime, I hope to develop a modest set of playing skills. Thanks again.

I’ve tried a couple of beginner lessons over the last few days and none have been nearly as engaging and enjoyable as this. I had a lot of fun doing this so thank you for taking the time to produce the video. I look forward to watching more!
This is outstanding. I've been to a number of sites which cover learning piano, but this one actually includes some key foundational and technique principles, which you would normally get from a teacher. It's really important to learn proper technique from the start if you plan do get serious. I made that mistake self-learning guitar and had to "unlearn" a bunch of bad habits. Thanks for posting - I'll be checking out your other videos as well.
I’ve watched a lot of beginners lessons since I’m looking for my very first piano and to kill the wait I was already watching lessons/tutorial, but this is definitely the best so far.
This works like therapy for my old tired brain, I can follow this. My memory is so poor that when I restart this video I get excited because it seems easier every session. I don’t think I’ll play as well as Billy Preston but that’s the way God planned it.

@@moiethereal9634 yes, but in a funny way. I had a fake book years ago so I memorized about 12 cords. So I don’t read the base clef, I just read the signature the top. So I need the music to play, but I can’t really read it the way most others do, and I can’t play by ear. Pretty mixed up but I get by 😬

Complete beginner here with trouble learning/understanding. I've gone through other tutorials and always get very frustrated and confused, but this tutorial is absolutely amazing easy to follow. I feel much much more comfortable at my keyboard and was able to understand and grasp everything you said. Thank you SO much ❤️
I purchased an electric piano. It sat in my office for nearly a year… Messing around here and there. Hardly learning. I had the best intentions… I finally told myself that I purchased this piano for a reason, not to become the most brilliant piano player… but to at the very least learn the chords and such and have fun along the way. Anything worth while takes time, commitment, and consistency, I suppose. So I said enough is enough and went to TH-cam. Landed here and now I feel a motivation and a passion now. My wife and I were making up songs with the chords you provided in this song and even she was impressed! Lol. So, long story short, thank you for the content. And to anyone that’s been putting this on the back burner waiting for inspiration or motivation… don’t. Just start doing it and the other will follow. Thanks again!
Dude this is so cool. Ive been playing metal/punk guitar for years. Always by ear. I bought an 85 casio for 20 bucks just for fun. Ive been messing around but i wanna learn for real. This was a lot of help man. Thank you so much

I am not ready to invest in lessons just starting out and you make this possible. I think this is going to take a lot of practice getting fingers to do right. You make it clear where to begin thanks
I started learning the guitar at 18 years old, by 22 I learned to play songs and write my own music on it. Now I’m determined to start playing the piano ❤️🥰 I hope to learn it as a second instrument !
I used to learn piano but had to end due to some circumstances. Now I got the interest on this instrument again, I completely forgot all the things I have learned about the piano and here I am.
Being a total musical rookie at 39yo, I'm landing here after receiving a gift of a launchkey mini. Leaving a note on my journey to see if I can utilize youtube to effectively teach myself how to play/produce music. Thanks for providing a stop on the path forward. These are some very valuable insights, which I'm sure will be most helpful with learning to physically play. Now to just find a good place to learn how to set up the keyboard and how to use ableton. WOW, this is a complex way to go about it. But, makes learning to play a piano type instrument an option for someone on a low budget and limited space during a pandemic.
As a guitar player that knows minimal theory and just prefers using my ear: I really appreciate this. I'm ordering an 88 key keyboard and I'll dig into your videos. Thanks so much for taking the time to make these thoughtful videos.
Hi, my daughter is starting piano at the age of 7. I am 42 and I will like to learn at her same pase. I will study her books and your channel. I have been interested in piano for many years and felt intimidated. Now it is time to get started. Thanks for this boost of hope!!! 🙏
this beginner lesson/session is amazing. I cant believe it only has 3000 views. this helped me get a grip of basic technique (hand fingers and coordination) and the keyboard as an instrument so much more than any of the other "beginner" lessons where they straight up just jump into random chord progressions without any explanations. you give simple instructions and give good amount of freedom to get used to playing. Just enough amount of basic tips to get started and feel comfortable. Absolutely love it!
Glad it was helpful! Just uploaded a tutorial on playing C major scale you may want to tackle next! Here's a link th-cam.com/video/i-buhBdqwtY/w-d-xo.html
I fear you may have sent me on an instrumental treasure hunt. I started at 8 years old laying keyboard for three years and then stopped, rediscovering my love of music in my 20s with the guitar. Love it because it’s so nuanced and versatile. The piano would make a fantastic ear training and accompaniment tool, not to mention a thing to do when guitar gets wearing... not that it has managed that yet. But at times it does disturb my housemate. Even with a headset an electric guitar still makes noise. I want a keyboard. Now. Much of that basic music theory and keyboard layout knowledge is still there. Ready and waiting. So thanks man.
Glad you found it helpful man. Yes getting control of your fingers takes a bit of work and time to get used to but stick with it, it’s going to start feeling more natural with time. Check out the major scales playlist on my channel, starting with C as a good next step. Good luck!
Now you are one of the best!! Piano teachers on TH-cam!.. I kid you not.. because you break it down on how how this Instrument is suppose to be played when learning.. Thank you😊🙏👍
This video was amazing! As someone who has never attempted to learn an instrument before this was incredibly easy to follow and understand. It took so much brain power to coordinate my hands to move correctly for the chords. But after practicing the progression for even 10 minutes it felt much more natural. Can’t wait to keep working my way through your videos. Thank you!
I just turned 73 and bought a digital piano. I have always wanted to play piano, but started with guitar. Now I have time for both. Your lessons resonate well with me, thank you

Hey man, just wanna say this is by far the best tutorial I've found for piano online, both in terms of delivery and presentation. Such a shame your channel hasn't been discovered by more people like me (complete beginners!!!) - please don't stop what you're doing, it's so cool that this kind of content is on the public domain for people who can't afford lessons. Thanks! I look forward to improving under your tuition :)
Thanks for the feedback dude, glad it's been helpful for you. Yea it's hard to get videos out to an audience when you're starting out but beginning to see a bit of traction. Like and comments like this really help though so thanks!
This is absolutely helpful. I started playing the piano during the Corona lockdown for 3 months and let it slide after that but I'm picking it up again properly and your lessons are great! Thank you!
I haven't really touched a piano in almost a decade when I took a class in music reading in college. I remember time and how/why middle c is and how it relates to sheet music, also very vague memories of chords and how each chord represents an emotion. Major chords being triumphant/happy and as such most Christmas music is written in using major chords, minor being sad, I forgot half diminished amd fully diminished.. and augmented being.. well spacy... used in alot of sci-fi musical scores. Beyond that I know next to nothing about actually playing the piano, posture and the fact that your going slow and covering each chord for awhile with different hand positions is really helping!!
Wow. I really loved this!! I’ve watched quite a few “start here beginner” videos and I love your focus on position AND learning to use your ear and improvise!! I’ve been focused on “learning a song” but if I learn to LISTEN the sky’s the limit. Thank you!!
Just bought a keyboard (second hand) This is helping alot! Great video! I have troubles letting my fingers do what my brain wants... I find it very difficult! But i will keep going.
This is great! Im a 56 year old beginner. I've been SLOWLY working through the Alfred's book for a few months now, but find it a bit dull and uninspiring. I also think that sticking to one source of information doesnt really suit me. I was beginning to lose interest and needed something to get me away from just learning cheesy tunes. This seems much better. I'm now planning on following your videos. Is there a particular order you'd recommend? Thank you so much. This has been a real inspiration 😊👍
I’m finding this now a few years later from the release of the video, but I love your videos! A lot of lesson videos I’ve seen feel like they hold back on information but it feels easy to understand and comfortable to start learning piano with your videos!
Hey @Piano from scratch I am 44 years old and just decided I would learn, so I dug out my daughters old 61 keyboard and plugged it in.... not too worried about sound at the moment. Followed a few tutorials and managed to learn a good deal of christmas lights by coldplay and now learning Paradise by coldplay too.... its tough going but I am stubborn. This tutorial has really helped as I didn't want to get into bad habits and you deliver a very calm way of emphasising the importance of form and getting the basics right. Thank you for that! I feel that the exercises of just learning to play hands together and getting form correct has already accelerated my learning. Good man. We thank you.

Mine hasn't arrived either....still watching videos in the hope that I'll be an expert by the delivery date!! haha
Thanks for the feedback, really glad it helped you get going! Good luck 🎹
How have you got on? I’m 66 too. It must be a ‘now or never’ thing,
@@suewilliamson7271 I am 50 and this young man encouraged me to start the piano.
61. Started two days ago. Working on scales, first. 😊 I've given myself 3 years (1,000 hours) to figure it out! (Alexis Matinée Pro keyboard.)
I am a pianist and a friend of mine asked me to give my opinion on this channel (and others), since she is keen to start piano (at 35). I have to congratulate you. Although this will never replace (obviously) a teacher, you have done a great job, showing patience, perseverance and knowledge. Well done sir!
One question since u are a pianist?
@@akiko_angel5945 weird question
I don't have money to spend on a teacher, how should I learn piano, through simply piano?, this youtube channel?, wich youtube channel?
Please give me advice on what, I should do.
And did your friend get better through this channel?
Thank you and have a great rest of your day,
Wish you all the best.
i had a piano sitting in my room for years. now it's the time to learn how to play it!
I’ve just started learning piano at age 60 and this is by far the most relatable and easy to follow tutorial I’ve come across. Thank you!
Just finally managed to buy my first piano at the age of 42. It’s gonna arrive next week! I’m so excited!
Your vid is just the best of what I found on YT, to get me prepared for my piano journey!
Thanks a lot! Keep making good videos please!
Starting at 40, with my 5 year old daughter. This was very helpful.
my grandpa loves his piano so much... i avoided it for years but now i wanna play it :( tysm for this i really don't know how to start
Awesome, good luck learning. I hope the channel can help you along the way
keep looking for online tools. TH-cam is full of help. best wishes
I really thank you. I've been fascinated with the piano since age 7, i'm now 52. I bought a keyboard, know how to read music, and now I have you. ❤
Fantastic, good luck!
@@PianoFromScratch i'm a french horn player, so this is alien to me but you're a great teacher and I appreciate you taking the time to do this.
I've just turned 65 and have decided that old dogs might be able to learn new tricks! I am finding your style and method really easy to relate to and am hoping that playing the piano will be something I can enjoy in retirement.
That's great, I hope you continue to enjoy playing!
65 here too. just bought very first piano. many thanks for providing your content. can change chords in a week! thanks
Thank you for these tutorials. After decades of wishing I could learn piano, at 63, I am finally committing myself to learning to play. I should be ready to play Carnegie Hall by the time I am 163, but in the meantime, I hope to develop a modest set of playing skills. Thanks again.
I’m 66 and thinking of starting. How have you got on? Did you continue?
@@suewilliamson7271 Do it/
i am from india and the place where i live piano teachers are rare or i can say no...but finally i found really a good piano teacher here thanks for wasting your time and uploading vidio on youtube
u rock...
lots og luv from india
I’ve tried a couple of beginner lessons over the last few days and none have been nearly as engaging and enjoyable as this. I had a lot of fun doing this so thank you for taking the time to produce the video. I look forward to watching more!
Glad you enjoyed it, hope the channel helps you learn!
I played the piano for years. Stopped playing but I’ve been missing it. Thank you for this ❤
Fantastic tutor 67 yrs just starting out oh my eyes are mashed but so excited to start learning a new chapter in my life yippppe 😂😂😂😂
Great, good luck learning!
You got this never too late!
You've got this good sir.👍🏼👏🏼
I’m 70 and just started 🤣🤣
This is outstanding. I've been to a number of sites which cover learning piano, but this one actually includes some key foundational and technique principles, which you would normally get from a teacher. It's really important to learn proper technique from the start if you plan do get serious. I made that mistake self-learning guitar and had to "unlearn" a bunch of bad habits. Thanks for posting - I'll be checking out your other videos as well.
Glad it was helpful, good luck learning!
I had lost hope of learning how to play it,but with this, am back on trail, big up
I’ve watched a lot of beginners lessons since I’m looking for my very first piano and to kill the wait I was already watching lessons/tutorial, but this is definitely the best so far.
Same!
You got my full attention at clair de lune
Me too 😂
What i learnt "get the fingering right first" helped a lot thx
wow dude, this is 1 year+ worth of lessons, excercises and practice! thank you so much!
This works like therapy for my old tired brain, I can follow this. My memory is so poor that when I restart this video I get excited because it seems easier every session. I don’t think I’ll play as well as Billy Preston but that’s the way God planned it.
Yes! Music is therapy!
You’re the best! I’ve been playing for 2 years and finally started performing( in front of people and it’s 😧. Hopefully it gets easier the more I do it. Thanks for sharing this.
I’ve been playing for 2 years (self taught) and finally started performing in front of people and it’s 😧. Hopefully it gets easier the more I do it. Thanks for sharing this.
I’ve been playing piano for a long time (self taught) and I can’t thank you enough for this amazing way of learning piano. NOTHING boring here!! I’ve already shared it with friends. I’m going to do the progression that you suggested of C F Am and G.
I really appreciated how low key and calm your manner is, stellar work.
Thanks, appreciate the feedback, good luck practicing
can you read notes (the ones on paper) ?
@@moiethereal9634 yes, but in a funny way. I had a fake book years ago so I memorized about 12 cords. So I don’t read the base clef, I just read the signature the top. I know where the notes are on the page but only have a vague memory of what each one is called.
So I need the music to play, but I can’t really read it the way most others do, and I can’t play by ear. Pretty mixed up but I get by 😬
Been playing guitar for 5 years. My keyboard comes in the mail today. Very excited to start learning.
Thanks for making content without the childish thumbnails, super annoying sales pitch youtuber-voice.
You are teaching piano, in a calm and wonderful way, thank you for existing and creating good content!
I'm 65, was lent a Yamaha 2000 PRS indefinitely, and to cap it off I found your starter lesson. Top stuff. Easy to understand, now I got to train my fingers to easily follow. Got the piano set up on my kitchen table- which means I give myself lots of mini-lessons through out the day as I often have to pass through the kitchen. 😄
GREAT LESSON, MANY THANKS.
For someone like me who is beginning from scratch, this video is realy helpful. Thank you!
Glad to hear! Thanks for the feedback
How are you doing at it now
My keyboard just arrived today and I wanted to hop on some practice so here I am :)) THANK U SO SO MUCH
I feel like I'm actually learning especially with my fingers starting to think to get comfy on the piano on the position
That’s great!
I have a keyboard sitting in a box for almost 7 years.. I saw your video and have started playing it, in a right way... Thank you.. (like /reply comment will motivate learning/practicing 😊)
Wow, in this single lesson I accidentaly found out how to play fragments of my favorite songs. Thank you so much, this lesson made me so confident and this just starts sounding nice. You've become officially my piano teacher =)
I just got my first piano.I am 67 and can't read music but these videos are fantastic for me to learn the basics. There seems to be a huge amount out there on Y T but this is great for the UK trainees! Thank you.
Found you and won't let go now. Hubs bought me a keyboard for Christmas because I've always said I wanted to play; had no idea where to start and then came across you. You are clear, concise, easy to follow and I just know that if it is in me you will bring it out. Thank you so much.
Thanks for the feedback! I hope you enjoy learning
This is easily the best beginner tutorial I’ve seen on YT. Thanks for sharing this with the world.
just finished your brilliant first lecture ... studied every word for 3 days and am here now ...thank you sir
Best Beginners lesson on TH-cam. No Bullshit, no paid Course - just the basics and it was exactly what I was searching for.
I hope, you make your money.
The best lesson I've found on TH-cam so far. Thank you!!! ❤️
I am a COMPLETE beginner and just got a keyboard. Amongst many lesson videos, yours is very helpful with many tips!
“Don’t be afraid to sound bad”
As a beginner violinist I think I’m probably desensitized to that 😬
Thanks for putting these together!
i just bought my keyboard two days ago and ive been searching for someone that actually explains something and there you are THANK YOUUUUUUU IM DEF GOING TO TRAIN ON EVERYTHING YOU STATED ON THE VID
so far you tutorial fits my level.. the clarity n patience during teaching fits my level.. some encouragement along the way is good..thanks for your hardwork..
Thanks for the feedback! Glad it has helped you out
started today with my new keyboard. I'm an absolute beginner. Really love these exercises. great way to start my musical journey. thanks
Complete beginner here with trouble learning/understanding. I've gone through other tutorials and always get very frustrated and confused, but this tutorial is absolutely amazing easy to follow. I feel much much more comfortable at my keyboard and was able to understand and grasp everything you said. Thank you SO much ❤️
Good on making taking the step to learn piano! I see a lot of people get discouraged when it gets confusing.
Thank you so much
Nice man, glad it helped
Hey i just want to thank you, I don’t have time to got to a private school for piano and do it on freetime or a pause from learning, you’re helping a lot with it
By far the best beginner video I've found on youtube yet!
Appreciate the feedback
I just received a keyboard. I have always wanted to learn. I am 51 and stumbled upon your video, i will be watching and trying to learn. Thank you for your hard work.
Lit bro. I started writing lyrics when I was 13 and started playing guitar when I was 17 but I really wanna learn piano too 🤘
I used to learn piano but had to end due to some circumstances.
Very helpful video…..
I’m your fan already…. I’m learning piano, and your videos are great and easy to understand by beginners…👌🏽❤️
Thanks for the feedback, glad it was helpful!!
I have never thought I'd adapt to soemthing this fast in one day. This tutorial is so well done and easy to digest!
This is an excellent lesson for me as a beginner. All the questions I had were answered. Thanks.
I been trying to find a good video for a long time and here it is. Thanks. Now I need to coordinate my finger movements
Thank you😊🙏👍
Thanks a Trillion!!! Definitely learned a lot. Love the improv lessons. Definitely a great way to start building confidence
most happiest part of this video is 00:00 - 00:45 because I am seeing the most precious soul talking to us.
Your lessons resonate well with me, thank you
Thank you for an easy to follow beginners lesson. Just long enough to give me something to practice ready for the next lesson. Look forward to the next one!
fantastic just started piano, great to have a common sense tutor talking piano, thank you more tutorial please I'm becoming very warm to learning piano.
Aaaah clair de lune 2:36 love that song ❤
daaaamn i really like the way you explain stuff.
This is great!! I’m a guitarist and just started learning piano. This video was really helpful. Cheers!!
I'm 75, I've just started learning piano again after about 30 years. And you are a great help. Thank you.
This is absolutely helpful. I started playing the piano during the Corona lockdown for 3 months and let it slide after that but I'm picking it up again properly and your lessons are great! Thank you!
Glad it's helped!
I've bin wanting to know how to play and you made my day.
I’ve searching a lot of tutorials and this is the best one.
Wow. I really loved this!! I’ve watched quite a few “start here beginner” videos and I love your focus on position AND learning to use your ear and improvise!! I’ve been focused on “learning a song” but if I learn to LISTEN the sky’s the limit. Thank you!!
Glad it was helpful. Learning actual songs and pieces is still really important too though! Copying is a big part of learning a new language
Excellent pedagogy for the improvisation bit. I always teach improvisation to students, no matter their skills
Hey, this is it right here... This is all I need as a beginner... appreciate you bro!!
Same ive been trying to learn video game music and its pretty hard
I’m finding this now a few years later from the release of the video, but I love your videos! A lot of lesson videos I’ve seen feel like they hold back on information but it feels easy to understand and comfortable to start learning piano with your videos!
Wow this really helped me I’ve created a lot of little tunes from these chords. Thank you bro I’m gonna keep watching your vids ❤️
